About this property
Family friendly modern cabin with extensive Mountain Views
Modern mountain home located on 13 secluded acres of woods and field. Three bedrooms are located on the ground level floor and one large bedroom with two beds on the second floor. It is a perfect home for large families with children. Antique furnishings are cleverly mixed throughout the design of the modern cabin.
Expansive covered porches wrap the house on two sides adding 850 sq.ft. of covered outdoor space lending long & short range views of the Appalachian Mountains, including Mount Mitchell (highest point east of the Mississippi River). The porches have rough cut black locust floors and posts. The porch posts were harvested from timber on the property. Salvaged eastern hemlock from the surrounding mountains was used for porch rails and roof rafters of the side porch.
Spend the mornings with a cup of coffee watching the sunrise and enjoy the evenings with colorful sunsets. Enjoy the quiet except for the occasional sound of barred owls calling to one another in the evenings or humming birds buzzing by during the day.
In the winter, cozy up to one of two hand-crafted fireplaces. The fireplaces were handcrafted using local Doggett Mountain rock.
After a long day of hiking, biking, or lake fun, relax in one of two clawfoot tubs. Sleep well on the new Casper mattresses throughout the house.
Family meals are easily prepared with the fully stocked and spacious kitchen. There are two large farm tables to enjoy family meals inside or outside on the porch (each seats 8).
WiFi, 4K TV, Roku, on-demand hot water, backup whole-house generator. Close to Asheville, Lake Lure, Chimney Rock, Black Mountain, and Hendersonville.
For families traveling with small children- we have a nice selection of children’s books, toys, games, and puzzles. A pack and play (bring your bedding for it), high chair, and booster seat are available. There is also an Osprey baby hiking pack to enable your family to explore the beautiful mountains together!

About the host
Hosted by Bob & Dawn Longe
We are a family of four: Bob & Dawn and daughters Wren & Sabal. We live and work in the Lowcountry near Charleston, SC. We both met while attending the Warnell School of Forestry & Natural Resources at UGA in the late 1990s. We have a great appreciation for native flora & fauna and natural systems. We look forward to being good stewards of the land and sharing it with others.
Why they chose this property
We love Appalachia. The biodiversity, history and unique cultural aspects it affords to inhabitants and visitors is unique. We have been drawn to the area most of our lives. Having grown up in the Southern United States, we often visited the Appalachian Mountains during family vacations and other camping excursions. It left a significant impression on both of us, and we hope to pass our appreciation for this part of world to our daughters and one day, their families too.
Our dream started to come true in 2017 when we began looking for land to build a mountain house. After a few road trips to and excursions across the mountains surrounding the Asheville area, we found our Appalachian oasis. We closed on the property in February of 2018. Over the next year and a half we had a road built to the home-site and had the timber harvested on several acres to open up the views of the mountains (the black locust porch beams are from trees harvested on-site). The house was built for us over the next year. We are very grateful for the skilled work of the local businesses that helped make a our dream come true: Mark A. Sneed Builder, Gilliam Logging & Sawmill, & Godfrey Grading..
