About this property

Adobe Vista - Cozy and inviting, spectacular view!

Summary:
Adobe Vista is a two bedroom, two bath adobe home with commanding views of Sul Ross State University and surrounding Alpine, nestled on the slope of 'A Mountain', imagine an adobe hug!

The Space:
Handmade in 2002 by the Peters family of four, Ted, Peggy and two daughters, Elaine (age 17), and Terra (age 13). Everyday 180 adobe bricks were made on-site with local dirt from a ranch. That dirt was hand-sifted, mixed with gravel, 10% cement, water, and love in a giant mixer! Dumped into a wheelbarrow, it was then, poured into a handmade form that looked like a giant bread pan without a bottom, holding nine breads. With handy hoes, we tamped the thick mud several times to ensure no air pockets, and like thick cake batter it sputtered and flopped into its form. Then the tops of the form were scraped with a door threshold and the little mud around the top were cut with a butter knife so when the form was lifted it didn't take the top with it. Left to dry about 5 minutes, then the form was lifted up, which took two people pulling evenly and coming up at the same time to minimize corner damages and birth the perfect nine bricks! Morning bricks were baked enough by the Big Bend sun that by the afternoon, they were turned on their side to dry overnight before being stacked the next morning. It took 3,000 of these to make Adobe Vista. Every brick was levelled and laid. You will see the walls have alternating brick sides, one level is longwise and the next layer was laid short side. This was for added stability of the structure. The adobe is exposed both inside and outside because 10% cement was mixed into the mud, making it possible to see every brick and enjoy the earthly and immense texture of adobe.
Adobe Vista was built for Elaine and Terra to attend Sul Ross State University. Doing so, they enjoyed living there throughout college. Now, nineteen years later Adobe Vista still gives adobe hugs! It's a feeling of comfort and peace that only 18 inches of handmade- mother earth walls can give. We hope that during your stay, you enjoy some of these hugs; they're on us!

Rustic and cozy

The cabin was exceptional. We have stayed for weekend and the night sky is good. It stayed little uphill which gives you the beautiful view of the whole town. It was right beside TX-118 which was amazing route for big bend, ghost town and much more activities.

Easy, affordable stay in Alpine

This home was charming and stocked with all we needed - including a washer and dryer. We appreciated the "extras" like shampoo, conditioner, and coffee. Beds were comfortable. AC worked great. Less expensive than local hotels and very close to Sul Ross State University. Communication with host was ideal. If you've never been to the Big Bend region, it's gorgeous.

Great place to stay in Alpine

We enjoyed our stay at the adobe. It was a quiet & comfortable retreat after a day at Fort Davis & a trip to Big Bend National Park. The communication with the host was easy. Everything was clean & I appreciated having a washer & dryer too.

Adobe Alpine House

Great little two bedroom house in mountainous area of Alpine Texas by university. Close to the 2 town main roads and the highways to Ft Davis/Big Bend. Beautiful antique clawfoot tub to soak in after a days adventure in the area. Cozy, comfortable, with a well stocked kitchen. Would definitely stay there again!!

Alpine

We really enjoyed our spring break excursion to Alpine. The cabin was great. The beds were comfy. We loved how the house set elevated on its own scenic hill. Offered a lot of privacy, yet also an in town vibe, too. Would recommend.

Rooms with a View

Charming adobe home with best hillside views of Alpine! The view alone is worth staying for, but add in cozy furnishings, full kitchen, outside seating, floor plan allowing two couples privacy, central location to do all west TX offers, awesome property management communication—you will find many perfect reasons to book this amazing vacation spot!

Alpine view

The little house was exactly as described with lovely views of Alpine and the university. It was comfortable and well equipped and the owners were easy to contact, although we had needed nothing. It was a great location to see more of the Davis Mtns.

Great jumping off point for day trip to Big Bend

We loved the mudbrick Adobe Vista house for its location and old West Texas feel. We stayed for a short 3-day weekend to do a day trip to BBNP. The location of this house was perfect. Alpine has everything you need to prep for the trip and being located close to HWY 118 made for an easy departure out of town. The house is well apportioned and outfitted for cooking and making a great cup of coffee or tea and the claw-footed tub was perfect respite after a day of hiking in the desert.I'd say the only downside is the neighborhood isn't the greatest view, but being elevated above most of the surrounding area helps to "overlook" that. I did think there were two showers, but that is on me for not reading the listing closely enough. There is only one shower and one tub. I also love that I didn't have to sweep, mop and do laundry before leaving. We just cleaned the dishes we used, piled up the towels and headed out. I absolutely would stay there again.

Outdated and Uncomfortable

The house was clean, but needed some TLC.The hot water was set too hot and difficult to control the temp in the shower. The shower was tiny, dark, and slippery. There was no grab bar for safety. We moved the mat from the tub in the master to the shower. There was no hair dryer. There weren't enough bars to hang wet towels. There was not one box of tissue in the house. A few extra hooks in the bathrooms would help. They did provide plenty of amenities such as soap, shampoo, conditioner and lotion. They should have a mat for each bathroom for safety purposes. The kitchen was dark at night and the only light was a lightbulb over the sink that had to be turned on with a string hanging down. There were no wine glasses. There were 3 thick green glasses, but 2 were cracked. Only 1 of the ACs in the master bedroom worked, and it was so noisy that we had to turn it off at night. It was a window unit right by the bed that cycled on and off every few minutes. The bed sagged in the middle. The mattress should be replaced. Overall, the AC system is absolutely inadequate. The paper blinds were old and torn and made a bad first impression. Real blinds are not a big expense. In the living room, there were wires hanging from the ceiling for the wifi. It didn't look safe. The whole electrical layout looked unsafe. The driveway and approach to the house was inadequate. The house needs a lot of work to be used as a VRBO. We left a day early because it was so uncomfortable.

Our Thanksgiving Stay at Adobe Vista

The house was comfortable and private, nestled in the hillside in Alpine. The view looking down toward town at night was very nice. The property was clean and well maintained. Any questions we had were answered quickly. My daughter and I loved staying there.
