Springlea Cottage is in the village of Deanscales which is just south of Cockermouth but within about 1 mile of the Lake District National Park border. Deanscales has a lovely pub, village green and beck. Your nearest lake is Loweswater, which is one of the smallest lakes in the Lake District, yet arguably one of the prettiest. Loweswater is the first link in a chain of lakes including Crummock Water and Buttermere. If you like to explore and are into walking, hiking, climbing or cycling, you have a vast expanse of natural Lakeland scenery to explore, including many of the 214 Wainwright peaks within easy reach. Some of the lower fells include Low Fell, Blake Fell and Gravel Fell to the west, Mellbreak to the south and the east, and some more challenging routes around Grasmoor at 2,795ft.
The area boasts beautiful flora and fauna as well as an abundance of wildlife, including buzzards, kestrels, ospreys and of course red squirrels. A trip to Loweswater wouldn’t be the same without a trip to the local pub, famous for its great food and possibly even greater beer! Famously brewing the award-winning Loweswater Gold, it’s a ’must try’. The surrounding area has many attractions and places to visit. The popular town of Cockermouth is just 3 miles away with a delightful selection of independent shops, supermarkets, restaurants, coffee shops, delis and pubs serving a variety of craft ales. It’s also the birthplace of William Wordsworth and home to the famous Jennings Brewery nestled beneath the castle walls.
If you fancy a day at the seaside, you have a great beach St Bees Head, 15 miles away, with a long stretch of golden sand and plenty of great walking and cycling routes. For golfers you have several great courses in the area, the nearest being Cockermouth, 6 miles away. You may want to head to Whinlatter Forest, 7 miles, with some nice gentle cycling trails or high adrenaline tree top adventure at Go Ape. Continue along the Whinlatter Pass to Keswick, 16 miles, to find everything this bustling town has to offer. The Lake District Wildlife Park at Bassenthwaite, 10 miles away, offers a wild day out with over 100 species of wild animals. Beach 12 miles. Shop 3 miles, pub and restaurant 530 yards.
