Harriet’s Hideaway is one of the six Pine Vale cottages in Seldom Seen, converted from a former water driven saw mill, dating back to the 1700’s. Situated at the foot of the beautiful Seldom Seen ravine, right next to the mountain stream Coombe Beck, in the village of Thornthwaite, this compact mid-terraced holiday cottage with small kitchen/ dining area but good sized lounge and bedrooms lies just three miles west of Keswick, a truly idyllic location with views across to Skiddaw in one direction and the beginning of the Helvellyn range in the other. The cottage benefits from two double bedrooms and feels like the perfect home from home; additionally there is also a private bench outside the front to be able to sit and relax. The area is great for both walking and cycling and lies on the lower slopes of Whinlatter, with many forest trails and mountain bike tracks. There is a gallery and tea room 100 yards from the cottage (open throughout the year apart from January) and a shop, pubs and restaurants are one mile away in the village of Braithwaite. The vibrant market town of Keswick has a wealth of amenities, a total contrast to the peace and tranquillity at Harriet’s Hideaway. Note those with limited mobility may find the stairs a little steep.

Loved Harriet's Hideaway and would definitely book again.
Loved Harriet's Hideaway and would definitely book again. Fabulous location for walking and straight out of the door into the forest behind. The cottage was lovely, cosy, warm and very comfortable. Just one little moan and that was a complete lack of cleaning products. No washing up liquid, kitchen or bathroom cleaner so we had to go out and buy some. That is my only small complaint.

No spare toilet paper.
No spare toilet paper. No salt or pepper. Rubber bathmat a bit manky. Outside bench had weeds growing through. (all small matters which didn't spoil the overall satisfaction)That said, cottage had all bases covered in respect to everyday needs and was in a very pleasant situation with good walks and outstanding natural beauty. Lost a few pounds in weight and came home feeling really energised, as did the rest of the family. Definite return prospect.

We enjoyed our holiday, on the rural edge of the village, in pretty countryside and not far from both a bigger village and Keswick. All as described. A shame there isn't a garden at all, but not a big problem. At least there is off road parking. The cottage is old but pleasantly modernised and comfortably furnished. However, there is some black mould in the bathroom which could easily be dealt with, but hasn't been. And maybe a manual switch to activate the extractor as there isn't a window in the bathroom. And finally, it was disappointing to find no cleaning products or materials nor basics like washing up liquid, salt and pepper etc, and only one tea towel and no spare bin liners. One doesn't really want to buy all these things for a weeks stay ...plus the inconvenience of not finding out till late on a Saturday! Done to help the local economy? It was an irritation which slightly tainted our stay, although location and accommodation wise, we did enjoy our stay.

We had a wonderful time at Harriet's Hideaway.
We had a wonderful time at Harriet's Hideaway. The house is lovely and was spotlessly clean. The beds were super comfortable and the area so quiet. We did 3 walks from the house, up Grisedale Peak, Whinlatter and Barf and they were stunning. The house is close enough to Keswick to do a shop but it feels so remote and wonderful once you're there. Will definitely be back again!

A lovely little property, clean and tidy with a new bath room.
A lovely little property, clean and tidy with a new bath room. Comfy beds with high quality linens. The only draw back is the lack of proper out door space as car is parked in front of the property. However, if you can get over this, you can sit on the bench outside and watch the red squirrels in the tree of the garden opposite. Great for access to the forest husband loved the mountain biking available.

Great value cottage in a great location. Cute little terraced property with two good sized bedrooms, smallish kitchen and good sized living room. Very handy for access to Braithwaite, Keswick and north western fells.

This was a little Gem of a place .
This was a little Gem of a place . It’s location is perfect for accessing all of the lakes . I was impressed with the BT sports and Movie access as this does not come as standard with most self catering holidays .
I have seen some of the negative reviews but can report the bathroom is refurbished and no issues with damp or smells so this is resolved .
The cottage is set in a very quiet residential area on the edge of Whinlatter forest of which there is direct access from behind the property or just up the road . The lull of the nearby stream was a delight to us and you may even catch sight of a red squirrel crossing the car park .
There are a wealth of leaflets and maps within the property that give you ideas of where to go and what to do . The double bed was comfortable and the cottage tastefully furnished with a good stock of cooking implements that make catering easier. It has two large sofas perfect for putting your feet up after a hard days walking . We loved staying here and will definitely be back .

Needs-
A sign to say where kitchen light pull is!
Oven shelves fixed/corrected as they fell down when used.
More shelves in kitchen, bedrooms and bathroom.
Information on purple recycling bags.
A towel rail in bathroom.
New hook on bedroom door as it fell straight off when touched.
Blinds in the kitchen as no privacy at front.
More drinking glasses in kitchen as only 4 there.
Toilet roll holder moved as in difficult to reach place.
Bedroom bins replaced as look battered/old.
Different mats in kitchen as they are slippery on floor.
Note to say DVD’s in cupboard.
Shower head to come out further from wall as bath base is curved so can’t stand close enough to shower.
