This unique building is a listed 18th-century ruined cottage, preserved exactly as it was found—complete with its original oak structure, dead ivy, birds’ nests, cobwebs, and dust—encased within a modern, highly insulated corrugated iron shell. Rather than renovating the ruin, the design embraces and protects its weathered charm, creating a warm, comfortable space where history and contemporary living coexist beautifully.
The studio’s innovative design earned it both a Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) award and the Architecture Journal’s Small Projects prize in 2017. It has been featured worldwide and exhibited at London’s Design Museum as one of the standout designs of the year. More recently, it appeared in the museum’s acclaimed "Waste Age" exhibition in 2021, with Kirsten Dirksen’s YouTube film on the project attracting nearly half a million views.
Set within the grounds of Croft Lodge, the studio boasts its private garden and access to a charming bluebell wood and a vibrant wildflower meadow. The surrounding landscape is equally captivating—situated on Bircher Common and adjacent to 1,500 acres of National Trust land, guests can explore miles of walking trails, including scenic routes to Croft Castle with its delightful gardens and café, or to Croft Ambrey, an ancient Iron Age hill fort offering panoramic views.
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to enjoy with opportunities for cycling, birdwatching, wild swimming, and canoeing on the nearby River Wye. The area is also rich in wildlife, with frequent sightings of deer, kingfishers, and rare butterflies.
Nearby, the medieval market towns of Ludlow and Leominster offer charming shops, excellent restaurants, and historic architecture. History lovers can visit Hereford Cathedral to see the famous Mappa Mundi, while bookworms will enjoy Hay-on-Wye’s legendary literary festival and vast selection of second-hand bookshops. For a cultural day out, explore the Ironbridge Gorge museums or enjoy seasonal farmers’ markets and traditional pubs in the surrounding villages.
Croft Lodge Studio is an exceptional, tranquil rural retreat, where heritage meets nature and adventure awaits just beyond your doorstep.
