The cabin is on a lovely clear lake. Very quiet, private and peaceful. The cabin had everything we needed. Master bed was very comfortable. No air conditioning but did t need it because of beautiful evening breezes. Would have been nice to have use of a kayak or paddleboard on the lake. We looked into renting one but didn’t seem easy. Barbara was a lovely and welcoming host and would have done anything to make us enjoy her much loved property. Thank you.
Lovely rustic cabin on Hobbs Pond. Comfortable and clean, everything you need. Host lives nearby, very friendly and welcoming but respects your space. Photos are representative. Great for a couple, maybe a small child or two. Nice (rustic) shower. Quiet rustic camp, not a party spot. Rustic is obviously the word, in a good way. We’ll be back.
This cabin was rustic and cozy and had all the essentials you need for a classic Maine experience! The location must be emphasized because it couldn't be beat, as the pond was pristine and beautiful. It was close to the coastline but tucked away so you felt more remote, at the same time could easily get necessities. The hostess was absolutely lovely, very accessible and helpful but never overbearing. The cabin could get chilly at night so wouldn't be appropriate to stay here off season. We loved it and hope to return.
We had a lovely stay for 2 weeks at Barbara cottage. The place had all we needed, it was clean well maintained and we had a best sleep there . The lake is so close and we has a great time on a canoe that Barbara has available for her guests. The lake is so clean and great for kids to swim in. The cottage is perfect size for 4-5 people and has all you need to cook and WIFI was great as I was working during our stay. The outside there is grill and seating for dining or just enjoying the time out. The neighborhood is so quiet and loons can be heard at night. Barbara and Amy were amazing hosts making sure we had all we needed. We are defiantly planing to be back, thank you for a great stay.
This was easily the worst peer to peer rental experience I have ever had.
The pond was beautiful, location wonderful. The building itself was a ramshackle dump.
List of grievances:
1. We all expected to be able to work remotely on this trip. Not possible as the internet they advertised was barely functional despite several requests to address this issue, no resolution. Massive loss of productivity and wages.
2. The side deck where the grill and tables were had an old apple tree grown over it, very charming! Until you realize it was infested with poisonous caterpillars! Yes that’s a thing! One in our party had so many rashes on his body he needed to go to urgent care and take prednisone.
3. No onsite coin op laundry as advertised in thr listing. They were referring to the laundrymat in town 15 minutes away!
4. Barely ever enough water pressure to take a shower, AND the water wasn’t potable it was from thr pond! Another omission from the listing!
5. The towels, linens, plates etc were completely worn out and frankly inappropriate to offer to guests, nevermind paying renters. The hutch full of flatware was covered in dryer sheets presumably to keep rodents out.
6. The general state of repair in this run down shack. A rotten step shed it’s corner on the fron stoop and caused me to fall. Awesome.
7. MICROMAGING LANDLORDS FROM HELL. They literally live next door and send snippy texts about nothing.
The whole time we felt unwelcome and unwanted. They had clearly never rented this place out before and wanted to take advantage of the ridiculous rates people are getting this summer coming off covid.
We looked for a better place to move to for the duration of the trip starting after the third day, but that was not an option as this was a historically busy summer. So we decided to try to make the best of it.
Honestly, should have gone home early and asked VRBO for a refund.
I was going to let this go and move on and leave their dignity alone as far as a review goes. Then she charged us $80 for screen door repairs and a missing mattress pad. TO FIX THE SCREEN DOORS THAT WERE ALREADY BROKEN? And why would one of us want to steal any threadbare bedding? I get that it all needs replacement, but you can’t charge us for that. Trashy.
Listen, do yourself a favor and don’t rent this place, even if it’s the only one left. Staying home is better.
Blue Loon was just what we imagined it would be and more! The cottage is outfitted with every board game and puzzle imaginable and the owner lives nearby and is attentive to your needs. The kitchen was outfitted with plenty of dishware and cookware, there is a gas grill off the furnished deck, and our queen sized bed was comfortable. The twin bedroom went unused, but was well lit and would have been fun for our twins when they were children. Not everyone drinks the water; knowing this, we bought gallon containers of spring water for 80 cents at Reny’s, though the owner will provide some for you to get started.
Hobbs Pond has pristine, clear water and you can see through to the bottom well off shore. It is extremely quiet except for the two loon families (which are well guarded residents of Hobbs Pond). We rented kayaks for the week from Maine Sport (they delivered from Camden) and enjoyed paddling on the glassy waters, looking for wildlife and seeing more waterlilies open everyday. Swimming was delightful with a gradually dropping sandy bottom to at least chest high. No leeches, thank goodness. There are regular morning swimmers doing a lap along the shoreline.
This is a family place and dogs on leashes are welcome. Our dog is a beginning swimmer and it was perfect for him! He even jumped off the dock to retrieve things a few times everyday! He dried off in the sunshine on the deck before taking off with us on a nearby hike (there are many nearby trails, all levels).
The Hope General store is less than a mile away and the friendly owners stock all the essentials you may have forgotten as well as great sandwiches, pizza, desserts, and snacks. But, everything we are looking for on Maine’s Midcoast seems to be 15-20 minutes away from Hope! We could eat out every day in Camden, Rockport, Rockland, or Lincolnville and not go to the same place twice.
We spent a relaxing week in the Blue Loon cottage with our seven-month-old infant son. We found this lovely cottage to be immaculately clean, very well equipped, and well maintained by the owners, who obviously care for it a great deal. The location is quiet and tranquil, and the community very friendly. I should explicitly mention that Hobbs Pond, at least throughout our stay, turned out to be untypical in being a place of quiet and tranquility instead of a watery racecourse for hordes of motorboaters. In addition, the water is clear and remains shallow for a great stretch, making it ideal for infants and small children.
It should also be mentioned, since the online listing doesn't, that the cottage in fact lacks drinkable water: its water supply comes directly from the pond. This can be a concern for people who need constant access to clean running water (eg, as the case may be, vacationing with a young baby), and as such, it's a detail that might be worth including in the online listing in the future. As for us, we took a day or so to adjust, and after that we both agreed that we'd return again without hesitation.
