About this property

Luxe Log Home w/ Hot Tub & Steam Shower on Private Lake

So much snow at North Star!

You will feel right at home in this 6 bedroom/3 bath luxurious, secluded hand-hewn log home furnished in beautiful lodge décor with a spacious 3-floor plan for up to 12 people. Nestled on a strip of private land between Rocky Mountain National Park and Arapaho Forest, North Star Lodge offers a peaceful retreat with spectacular views of Mount Baldy and the Never Summer mountain range.

Located on Sun Valley Lake, a private 22-acre lake where your family will enjoy non-motorized water sports, the use of 2 kayaks and 2 SUPS, a private dock, and an expansive deck over-looking the lake. Relax in the hot tub after a day of out-door pursuits to enjoy the wonder of the stars above or a surprise visit by the many moose that live here. The outdoor fire-place on the deck and separate outdoor fire-pit closer to the water allow for endless hours of s’mores and story-telling, while the gas Weber BBQ grill (propane provided) makes for easy meal prep and the feeding of your crew at the adjacent long porch table. Slip away to enjoy a quiet moment on any of the outdoor lounge chairs, rocking chairs, and Adirondack chairs, and hammocks, which are scattered around the property. Moose, elk, deer, fox, osprey, beaver, bald eagles, hummingbirds, and stellar jay birds are frequent visitors on the property.

The log interior with pine paneling creates a rustic simplicity that reconnects you to the natural setting around you and reminds you to slow down. The interior layout is perfect for 2-3 families and allows for countless ways to congregate as a group or provides opportunities to slip away for some quiet, reading time with a bookcase full of books and trail guides of the area. The floor to ceiling stone fireplace (with fire wood provided) on the main floor creates a cozy space to kick back and connect. Board games, puzzles, as well as corn hole and badminton are available for your pleasure. Two flat screen TV areas (main floor and 1st floor) with satellite and DVD players and many family movies, provide opportunities for different interests, while the foosball and air hockey table (both on the 1st floor) nurture a little competitive fun.

The main floor with a vaulted 30’ ceiling provides access to the large deck over the lake as well as a covered front porch. The side door allows a separate entry to the enclosed mudroom with two sets of new washer/dryers. The 1st floor is a walkout basement with direct access to the lake.

The top floor overlooks the main floor and has two bedrooms (king bed in one and bunk bed, with full bed below and twin above, in the other). A study with desk, leather reading chair/ottoman and books offer a quiet escape. The bathroom has a shower/tub and double sinks.

The main floor offers a kitchen with everything you could want from home including new stainless steel appliances (dishwasher, fridge, and gas stove top, and electric oven), several small appliances, a large table to host your guests plus a separate countertop for two. Common spices, oils, and vinegars are provided. The main floor bathroom offers a steam shower to host several people, which is connected to a half bath.

The 1st floor provides 4 bedrooms each with a queen bed, as well as bathroom with shower/tub and double sinks. The house is surprisingly quiet for the number of people it can host.

All beds are supplied with 600 thread count sheets, flannel duvet covers, down duvet inserts, down pillows, and lighter coverings for the spring and summer. Luxurious towel sets and hot tub towels are provided for each guest. Each bedroom has blinds, plus blackout curtains for a restful sleep, as well as a ceiling fan, smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector (batteries replaced annually). Air conditioning is unnecessary in the mountains as temperatures fluctuate significantly. In the winter, radiant heated floors throughout the house keep the house toasty warm. The house and hot tub are professionally cleaned after each rental.

North Star Lodge is the perfect launching point for all seasonal adventures. It is within walking distance to both the entrance to Arapaho Forest, Rocky Mountain National Park trails, lakes, and forests, as well as the north fork of the Colorado River.

In the summer, enjoy fly-fishing the Colorado River, renting ATVs to cruise the trails of Arapaho Forest, and hiking the cherished trails of RMPC. Trail Ridge Road, Bear Lake Road, and Old Fall River Road are favorites.

A short drive takes you to Grand Lake’s 18-hole golf course & the world’s highest registered yacht club. Rent paddle boards, sail boats, kayaks, motorized boats and enjoy the day on Grand Lake.

The Winding River Resort campground is within walking distance from North Star Lodge and in the summer offers horseback riding, horse drawn hayrides, a petting zoo, square dancing, chuck wagon meals, a small children’s playground, basketball courts, a small general store, and cowboy church, to name a few.

In the winter, snowmobiling provides adventures through Arapaho Forest with Grand Lake earning the title “Snowmobile Capital of Colorado” because of its access from town to Colorado’s largest network of groomed snowmobile trails. Park your snowmobile on our driveway and ride into Arapaho Forest or even right into town.

Enjoy snow shoe, classic and skate skiing trails at the Grand Lake Nordic Center. Enjoy world-class down-hill skiing at Granby Ranch (30 mins), Winter Park (45 mins) or Steamboat Springs (2hrs).

The charming, old-western town of Grand Lake is roughly 4 miles away. Boasting great restaurants, artisan shops, live music in the park, plus a small grocery market, Grand Lake amenities make it easy to settle into your vacation to truly relax. Grand Lake itself offers a small beach and boardwalk with many grassy picnic spots. A well-respected repertory theatre also offers summer theatre and musical productions for the whole family.

ATV and snowmobile rentals at the opening of Arapaho Forest and XC ski trails within Rocky Mountain National Forest, as well as a short drive to Grand Lake Nordic Center for XC skiing/tubing run, North Star Lodge offers countless opportunities to get outdoors and reconnect as a family.

Update: In the fall of 2020, the East Troublesome Fire tore through Grand County and burned almost 200,000 acres by the time heroic firefighters brought it to full containment. Although it was directly in the path of the fire, North Star Lodge and property were spared with minimal damage suffered and with its trees still standing. Many of the surrounding properties in the area were badly damaged, but in this strong mountain community, the rebuilding process began swiftly and robustly. While the fire did alter the landscape, it has not diminished its rugged beauty and is still the magical setting that it has always been.

Understandably there are many questions as to what you might expect when visiting North Star Lodge. The Troublesome Fire came over Arapaho Forest, into Sun Valley Lake / Kawuneeche Valley and into Rocky Mountain National Park leaving significant changes to the area, including the loss of many cabins and surrounding trees. Since the fire, almost all properties/cabins have been cleaned up, but there are still many burnt trees that remain standing. Just like a tornado, the forest fire was indiscriminate, and there remain areas and properties that were largely unaffected with North Star and a smattering of properties being spared. The property on north side of North Star, across from North Star to the north, and the property opposite North Star across the lake are completely intact, but most cabins to the south of North Star are gone including our immediate neighbors on the south side. What remains now is an impressively open vista of Sun Valley Lake, Mount Baldy, the Never Summer Mountain range, and the Rocky Mountains.

What was incredible to witness this past summer 2021 was the return of grass, trees, healthy vegetation, and so many moose! We celebrate with our neighbors who have begun the rebuilding process.

North Star has been rented back to back since March 2021 with guests thoroughly enjoying their stays despite the impact on the land.

I am completely transparent! Before I accept your booking, I will make sure you are comfortable knowing the land experienced damage from the fire. I want you to have a wonderful vacation and enjoy using North Star as the perfect launching off point for your adventures!

There is no question that North Star Lodge is still a very special home in a very special part of Colorado, and we look forward to welcoming you for adventures!

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the North Star Lodge. Everything about the home is comfortable and welcoming. The kitchen is well stocked and we lacked for nothing during our stay. The neighborhood is quiet and peaceful. Looking out at the lake through the gold leaves of the aspen trees can only be described as serene. And you will not find a better or more attentive host than Heather. Being so close to the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park afforded us several opportunities to go listen to the elk bugle - which was our reason for visiting the area. Providing everything to make s'mores is a nice touch. We enjoyed them in front of a cozy fire.Thank you for your hospitality! We hope to stay again.

Great lodge, beautiful setting

Nice private lodge with beautiful views. Host was communicative and check-in/check-out were easy. Had a great time with an adult group. With games in basement and water activities available, I could see it being even better for families. Absolutely gorgeous!

Awesome cabin for a large group

Myself and 10 friends had a great time at this cabin. Private (neighbors weren’t around) Great space inside, and we loved the water activities, we were the only ones on the lake. Loved the paddle boat and being able to fish off the dock. Location is close to town and large driveway for multiple cars. Would definitely come back!

A wonderful week in the mountains

We had the most wonderful stay at the North Star Lodge. The view of the mountains and the lake was absolutely gorgeous! We enjoyed many fires both inside and outside on the deck and we spotted a mother moose and her calf right on the property a few different times! My grandkids loved playing in the treehouse and taking the paddle boat out on the lake. The cabin was also very comfortable, clean and had everything we needed to make it great week in Grand Lake!

North Star Lodge is a great getaway with beautiful views!!

We had a wonderful time in Colorado with 12 people! There was plenty of room in the spacious North Star Lodge! The views on all sides of the Lodge are gorgeous! You see mountains everywhere you look! The Lodge is a short and convenient 5-minute drive to the town of Grand Lake. And you are right by the west entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. Heather, the property manager, is super helpful and very responsive to any communication. We appreciated all of her help! We highly recommend this property and would definitely return again!

Perfect Snowmobile Getaway

This home could not have been better for our long weekend, family snowmobiling getaway. The home is just beautiful, with everything we could have needed. We enjoyed the hot tub, steam shower, grill, game room, bedrooms on multiple floors and the ability to ride right from the driveway and be on the trail in a couple of minutes. The mountain views are spectacular and I’m sure it’s amazing to have the lake access during the summer. Communication with Heather was fantastic from answering my questions prior to even reserving, sending activity ideas weeks in advance, communicating every step of the way during checkin/checkout and even checking in to see what we needed during the trip. Outstanding host and a friendly process makes all the difference. As a side note, even the way they phrase the checkout list made us feel at home. Little things that make a difference like “I’d appreciate if you clean the grill after use” is so much nicer than “CLEAN GRILL AFTER EVERY USE!!” What a pleasure. We’d welcome the chance to come back!! Thank you!!

Sun Valley Lake Family Vacation

Our stay at North Star Lodge was memorable. The Lodge had plenty of room for 6 adults and 3 children. Heather Mann was very responsive from booking to checkout. Upon booking we were provided with all the amenities of the lodge and activities in the area. We wanted to reserve a couple fly fishing trips, and Heather provided us with some recommended Guide Services. We chose Kirk Fly Fishing Guides in Grand Lake, who were excellent. Our family loves Sun Valley Lake. It is different from times past since the fire, but the moose and elk were much more plentiful especially in the early morning and evening hours. We had hours of fun in the kayaks and paddle boat on Sun Valley Lake. The ducks and ducklings as well as geese with their goslings were a treat for my grandkids. We were fascinated by the pelicans, osprey and eagles fishing around the lake. They seemed to have better luck than we did catching the trout. We appreciated Heather providing us with sufficient bottled water when the water filtration system failed as well as providing fair compensation. The 2020 fires changed the landscape, but the Grand Lake area is magical with its many outdoor activities. Being at the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park provides many outdoor options for a family.

Best Ever Family vacation at North Star Lodge

We loved everything about our vaca at North Star Lodge! First of all the lodge is in a beautiful location just outside the west entrance to RMNP making animal sighting excursions and hikes in the park so convenient. The lodge sits on a lake and has beautiful views of the mountains from the back side with gorgeous sunset skies. The animal/moose/bald eagle sightings around the house were incredible with a mama moose and her two babies visiting under the back porch multiple times during the week- incredible! The Lodge is decorated and stocked with every detail in mind to provide all the feels for a mountain get-away yet providing the convenience of amenities even for the chefs in the family. Heather, the host, was available via text to answer any question we may have had (even helping when we had car trouble and needed to find a new battery!) and was pro-active in communicating prior to the trip with details allowing us to fully take advantage of all North Star had to offer. We love the town of Grand Lake and breakfast and dinner at Sage Brush, lunch at Cy’s, and our last night dinner at the historic Rapids was all terrific. Boating on Shadow Mtn Lake/Grand Lake for at least a half day is a must - we rented from Trail Ridge Marina. My daughter and I rode at the Winding River stables right next to North Star, and my son fished off our pier for the catch and release trout. We enjoyed evenings in the hot tub on the deck and sitting by the fireplace on the deck enjoying S’mores and at time a glass of wine. All the beds were comfortable; wi-fi is available but struggles if all 7 of us were trying to use it/stream at the same time. I can’t wait for all the re-building from the 2020 fall fires to be completed in the area as you can’t help but feel for the families that lost so much, but am so happy North Star was spared. We will definitely be back for our next CO vacation!

Grand Lake Getaway

6 old friends from all over the country met for a long weekend in Grand Lake. The cabin is in a great location to Rocky Mountain National Park. You are almost across the street from the visitor center and a very short distance to the Park Entrance. Additionally you are a short drive to Grand Lake for most of your grocery needs as well as shops and restaurants. The cabin has an ideal set up with a middle floor for gathering, dining and hanging out. Two bedrooms upstairs, a large master and a double bunk bed as well as a nice, quiet reading room. The other four bedrooms are in the basement area with foosball and air hockey tables. Further, the owners have gone to great length to make the stay comfortable with plenty of towels for both showers and the hot tub, sheets and linens were good quality. There are plenty of amenities for cooking that are provided. It seemed like a lot of the little things that make life relaxing were present and provided as well as a care package of some snacks. Heather was excellent about reaching out in advance and any modifications we needed. She was also very open about the damage to the area by the East Troublesome Fire in October of 2020. She let us know that the area had been ravaged and that some of the houses on the street and the lake had been lost due to the fire and we would be able to see the extent of the fire's damage. It certainly is an eye opener. Much of the area has been devastated. That said, all of us loved the cabin. It's a great base for exploring and many of us planned on coming back in future years to see the regrowth of nature in the area and to see how quickly the area bounces back from such tragedy. Already new foundations have been laid and much of the damaged trees have been piled up and cleaned up. If you accept that nature can wreak a terrible path and are looking for a great base to explore the Western Side of Rocky Mountain National Park and easy access to Grand Lake then I would recommend North Star Lodge and renting with Heather. She was great to work with.

This home is perfect for multi generation families. Plenty of room to spread out and not be on top of one another. Stay here!North Star Lodge was the perfect place for our family’s three generation visit to the area. We book frequently through VRBO and found this to be the only place that provides enough toilet paper, paper towels, tissues, soap and garbage bags for the entirety of one’s stay. Nice!Heather was quick to respond to the many questions I had before arriving, and wrote to welcome us upon arrival. Five stars to the host as well as the house! The house was clean and provided lots of kitchen appliances. The stand-up paddle boards were a big hit with the grandchildren. And everyone enjoyed viewing the two moose cows with their calves. Close proximity to the RMNP west entrance, the Arapahoe Nat’l Forest and a quick two minute drive to On the Trail Side x Side rentals was an added bonus.

Stayed at North Star Lodge August 17-24. We had a big party of nine family members and we enjoyed every minute.
