About this property
Sweet, Historic Cottage on Carmel Point
Welcome to the cozy, wonderful Cottage of River Winds, a unique and wonderful all-heart redwood cottage designed by early California architect Julia Morgan! This 103-year-old cottage is the heart of our family's memories for 3 generations--and soon to be yours, too. Step back in time in this wonderfully preserved, immaculate home, truly a historic gem of old Carmel. Open beams, all-heart redwood walls, many original features, a stone fireplace, large sunny patio, antique furniture and original oil paintings of the area.
We are happy to share this family treasure with you. Our cottage stands amid a large garden on Carmel Point, just two blocks from Carmel Beach and three from Carmel River Beach. It is close to everything--just one mile to Carmel Village, about 1/2 mile to the Carmel Mission, and easy access to Hwy 1.
We have 3 bedrooms: 2 with queen beds that share a full bath (tub/shower) down a small hallway. The third bedroom is quite small and has 1 full bed with private access to a tiny full bathroom (with shower) in the main part of the house.
Fully supplied kitchen; all linens provided; cable TV, DVD player, iPod player, secure wireless internet, and everything you need for a comfortable stay.
We mostly rent by week or month; shorter stays in wintertime. If the simple peacefulness of bygone times speaks to your heart, you will fall in love with the Cottage of River Winds.

Our stay was delightful and magical! We felt so at home and would had stayed longer if we could. The gardens were beautiful! Everything was well kept and clean. What a joy to have found such a lovely place.
The home was so wonderful and fun! I felt at home immediately and just fell in love with the place! It had all the amenities we needed and was comfortable for us all. I highly recommend and want to come back for a proper vacation, as this stay was for a work trip.
Cozy, clean and well kept cottage. Comfortable beds and well equipped kitchen. The garden is beautiful and a great place to meditate or drink your morning coffee. Fantastic location close to the beach and everything Carmel has to offer. The host reached out promptly to check on us when we arrived. We only had a minor issue with a smoke detector false alarm and the property manager showed up within minutes to address it. He was very friendly and thorough. We would definitely stay again at this property.
The cottage is a historical classic, right in the heart of Carmel. The place is close to the best of everything that Carmel has to offer but the place is so cozy you'll find it hard to leave.
This is a historically significant home with modern appliances, much space, a beautiful garden, and a short walk to the ocean. This is our second stay and, if in the future we plan to spend time in Carmel, we'll try for a third.
We stay every year and it feels like home. It's perfect for our family. The location is great, we have rooms for the kids, the beds are comfortable, and everything we need is there. The home has a lot of history and the interior is so typical Carmel. The owner and property manager are very responsive. The front yard allows for outside seating and the garden is so pretty and spacious. We'd recommend for anyone looking to stay in Carmel.
We love staying here. We can escape the heat back home, enjoy the walks to the beach, sit inside or outside for meals or walk into Carmel for a meal at a restaurant.
The beds are comfy, the place has everything you'd need and we have no complaints. We'll be back next year.
Our great-aunt Etta (in the blue dress) settled here at the Cottage with her friend, Kelly, after World War I. They ran the Cottage of River Winds as a Bed & Breakfast for many years, through many days of hard work and grace. The Cottage has been in our family for 3 generations. Our parents loved and cared for this beautiful property until their deaths a few years ago, when my brothers and I took over. We try to take care of it in the way that Etta would do, providing peaceful simplicity in an atmosphere of beauty at 'the greatest meeting of land and sea.'
Why they chose this property
The Cottage of River Winds is our family's treasure. We were blessed to enjoy many of our best family memories here while growing up, and we enjoy sharing this remarkable, unique place with others who seek a simple, peaceful experience like this.
What makes this property unique
The Cottage of River Winds lets you step back in time to a simpler day when the beauty of a garden, the whisper of rainfall on the roof, the peacefulness of a cup of tea in the morning sun, enrich your soul and feed your heart.
