About this property
Comfort Found Literary Lodging
Please read the entire description before reserving your stay and tell us something about yourself. Comfort Found Literary Lodging is a year-round, nightly (min. 2 nights) or weekly alternative to traditional overnight lodging. No smoking (anything), no pets, no children under 13.
We think of this property as our home away from home and like to know something about those we are inviting to stay. We ask our guest to leave it in the same condition as they found it upon their arrival. Think of it as a friend’s home without the friend home. We are not a hotel or motel. Our guests have exclusive use of this entire top floor, third story apartment .
Comfort Found Literary Lodging is a fully furnished, two-bedroom (each bedroom with a queen sized bed), river view apartment in a historic New England downtown. Restaurants, galleries, shops, a book store, library, the Lincoln Theatre with films and live performances, and the Damariscotta River Harbor are nearby.
Please note that this apartment is on the third floor with wide stairs, but no elevator. If anyone in your party has a walking impairment, please consider it before booking. A fully time tenant lives on the floor below. We ask our guests to be mindful of heavy footsteps and noise.
Base rate $175 night for up to two guests. Extra guests: $25 night for each extra guest up to two for a total occupancy of 4 people. We offer a weekly discount of 7 nights for the price of 6. Monthly rates available upon request depending on the season.
Eat in, dine out, or take out in the spacious convenience of the modern kitchen and dining area. Linens and kitchen essentials for four. Furnished with antiques and clean, comfortable furniture. Wi-fi Internet, DirecTV, and phone.
Self check-in any time after 3:00 p.m., check-out time: 11:00 a.m. unless prior arrangements are made. We live on the West Coast, but have staff on the premises.
All prices include cleaning service after a guest visits, and rooms come with clean linens and beds made. We do not charge a cleaning fee. We ask that guests pick up after themselves during their visit and leave the dishes washed and put away. We’ll take care of trash/recycleables and the linens after your stay for the next guest.
Also see our seasonal waterfront property Comfort Found by-the-Sea, Christmas Cove, South Bristol, Maine, on www.VRBO.com/598008.

About the host
Hosted by Jeff Prostovich and Sharon Lovejoy
Comfort Found Literary Lodging was founded by the award winning author and illustrator Sharon Lovejoy and her husband Jeff Prostovich, a real estate broker in California.
Why they chose this property
The first time I saw downtown Damariscotta I felt as though I had come home. The small village of old sea captain’s houses, the perfect New England churches and steeples and mid 19th century brick buildings huddled near the river touched my heart.
One building in particular stayed in my mind. For decades, 112 Main Street was the apothecary shop for the town. Years later, the pharmacy was taken over by a country store (now a gallery) and the top two floors were turned into apartments.
When the chance came to buy the building, we wandered through the floors up to the top level. It felt like a Paris (don’t laugh) apartment. Maybe it was the 33 steps, but I loved the high ceiling in the stairwell, the moldings, the funky 30's kitchen, the living room, and the two bedrooms.
We had often talked about buying a small hotel to outfit with comfortable furniture and beds, antiques, art, and lots of wonderful books.
When Jeff asked me what we should call it, I thought of the book Comfort Found in Good Old Books by George Hamlin Fitch. Written in 1911 by the book reviewer for the San Francisco Chronicle, Fitch’s book highlighted the most beloved of the books he turned to for comfort. He believed, as do I, that cultivating a love of reading is one of the best gifts you can give yourself. Books bring the world to your easy chair; they give you wings; and they are ever faithful friends whether you need inspiration, edification, or consolation. Fitch believed in the verity of the old quote by Thomas Carlyle, “My books are friends that never fail me.”
When our first guests checked into Comfort Found, they said, 'This is a HOME,' which was exactly how we wanted them to feel. Jeff and I would like to invite you to experience the real taste of New England in the warm and welcoming rooms of our dear 'Comfort Found.' I think you'll feel, as did our first guests, that you've stepped into a well-loved home.
Thee is welcome here friend.
