About this property

Walk the Beautiful Beaches of Chebeague Island

Chebeague Island is relatively easy to get to and located close to Portland, Maine’s biggest city. We host by the week only in July and August but have a four day minimum in June and September. During the high summer checkout day is Sunday due to the many weddings on this lovely island.

We returned to this site after two years with a new (built in 2015) energy efficient post and beam, open plan home which we are renting to vacation families on a limited basis. This super insulated home has heat and air conditioning which makes for super comfortable sleeping.

We have included in our fees two refundable deposits for cleaning and security. Which are not labeled on the site much to our dismay.

Take our kites to the beach. Exploring this island and the many beaches is a requirement.

Walk to several beaches from this secluded property. This home is situated on a charming side road on 3 acres of mostly wooded property. We designed it with a nod to a neighborhood of cottage and farmhouse style homes. But, it is throughly modern with passive solar (shade in the summer) super insulated, Marvin windows and French doors. It is heated with mini splits, (heat pumps) which also produce AIR CONDITIONING which our guests have been very grateful to come home to after a hot day in the sun. There is a heat pump hot water heater in the basement. All appliances are fairly new, energy efficient, state of the art. A lawn and garden has been carved out of the surrounding 60 to 80' tall trees to site the house. The house is on solar but, you can’t see the panels because it is on an offsite solar farm.

We are excited to present this home for your enjoyment. While the home is compact at 1980 square feet on two floors, the open plan and many windows and their placement offer views into the outside surroundings and effectively enlarges the home. The roofed over wrap around deck enlarges the living space to well over 2000 square feet. Many of our guests spend a lot of time on the porch reading and relaxing or viewing the deer, turkeys and woodpeckers.

A large entry greets you as you enter with a view throughout the first floor. The kitchen has a large French door refrigerator with two drawers below, a Farmhouse sink and island with seating. We have all the pots, dishes, glasses and silverware you need including a lobster pot and everything you need for a fabulous lobster dinner.

On the second floor the master bedroom is lovely with a white iron scroll queen bed, armoire, bureau and end tables with lamps, beautiful flower rug. It opens to a sitting area. The center of the house is open to the roof beams. With a sitting area, desk and couch for quiet reading. Also on the second floor are two bedrooms, each with twin beds and a bath with deep soaking tub and handheld shower. Enjoy summer breezes through the treetops while bathing in our soaking tub.

On the first floor, the 100 year old dining table seats six. The "Away" room contains seating and a large armoire holding a Smart TV and games We have internet for your convenience. First floor bath has a large old fashioned sink and a good size shower, cabinet for towels. Nestled close by is the washer and dryer in it's own nook.

Walk through the French doors in the dining/kitchen area onto the covered porch with seating, a bit further takes you to a picnic table with umbrella and grill. The porch is great for sitting outdoors when it rains or just sitting in the summer shade.

Grill outside on the propane stove and have a lovely dinner on the picnic table as the sun slips down over the trees to the west. Take a walk outside either through the woods or down the road to a beach. Or, just enjoy the birds, turkeys and deer that come into the yard. We have croquet and kites for your enjoyment.

Chebeague has two ferry services, one owned by the islanders, gift shops, island grocery, library and many places to have lunch or dinner with views. Have lunch at the Inn on the porch. You will be glad you did. There is a lot going on in the summer. We offer sailing lessons for children, drama coaching and a summer play produced locally, golf clinics, a great library with story hour, hiking out to Deer Point or one of the many beaches. Or, learn about the history of Chebeague at the old Schoolhouse/Historic Society and shop in it’s gift shop.

It is a short hop to the mainland to sightsee or have dinner in Portland. Portland is one of the great foodie cities in the northeast, while keeping the ambience of an old New England city. Also, the museums and shops are excellent. Well worth a day trip into town. There are also wonderful restaurants in Yarmouth, closer to the ferry.

Visit the famous LLBean and their Outdoor Discovery School which has become one of Maine’s premier destinations for shopping and learning about Maine’s outdoors.

The woodlands home
Patricia was easy to contact and she responded quickly . Her home is beautiful and stocked with everything you should need. We were at the island for a family wedding, so we didn’t spend much time at the home but when we did it was cozy and comfortable. Thank you Patricia

Perfect week!
Beautiful modernized home with all the comforts on a wonderful island. So much to do on the island that we didn’t come close to exploring all the spots with just one week. The hosts were very attentive and the house was immaculate. Will definitely be back next year!

Beautiful home
Patricia was very responsive whenever I sent her a text. She was also there to help us arrive and leave, a necessity considering how busy the dock area is and the lack of rental cars on the island. The house itself has plenty of rooms and beds. The AC was amazing when we used it. The yard around the house was well maintained and the kids loved exploring the area. Biking all over the island wasn't difficult, but the car that was available was much appreciated! There's a lot to be said for how amazing the island is, bit Patricia's guide included a lot of information on all that's available. Thanks for having us!

About the host

Hosted by Patricia Festino

Host profile image
Experienced five star hosts return with a new home. Patricia and Roman.

Roman has joined me here and has been an experienced charter yacht captain. He is a valuable team mate. We have sailed many miles together.

This is my second home on Chebeague Island. The first was a renovation of an 1855 foreclosure which was throughly renovated, walls moved and strengthened. It was sold (although not listed for sale) a few years later. What I really wanted was a home of my own design, passive solar and energy efficient. This home is the result of my wishes and meets those requirements.

I am from Maine but had been away for fifteen years. I came back to Maine in 2010 when I found a house on Chebeague that suited my taste and was in foreclosure. The house I found on Chebeague I named "House on the Hill" a historic family home and was in dire need of renovation including supporting the house from the basement up, heating system, new plumbing and walls moved at the top of the lists.

I had lived on my boat for five years and sailed back and forth from Maine to the Caribbean. I found that my parents needed me in Florida so I took down my sails and stopped in Florida where I spent ten years.

After spending so many years in the tropics my heart's desire was to have a super insulated home and be near my family. I had the family part solved as I had raised my children close to Chebeague in Maine.

So while I was happy to have and dearly loved my last home I sold it and started to look for property to build my next home.

I didn't want to leave Chebeague which is a very special place to live and looked at every property that was listed or even rumored for sale. I was not sure that I wanted to live on this side of the island but when we turned down Carter's Point and I saw the wonderful homes close to the site, I lost my heart.

After designing or renovating and building five houses I had found a wonderful place to build my home which I now offer to share with you.

Why they chose this property

One of the many special things about Chebeague is the people, friendly and caring. We have wonderful neighbors.

The island has a lot to offer, two ferry services, the elegant Inn, library, top rated schools and recreation center with pool, tennis, golf, island grocery, Historical Society, the many beaches surrounding the island, easy access to seafood if you fish. Fishing for mackerel, squid or stripers as the season provides. Second Wind Farm organic produce. Lobsters delivered to your door. Local organic eggs are also available. Wonderful walking or biking, birding or photography.

In the summer there are several places to enjoy lunch with beautiful views, gift shops, even the transfer station is a special island experience.

Two ferry services offer easy access to the mainland and Portland, the largest city in Maine. From Portland fly, bus or train to any destination in the world.

A very special place to build my home.

What makes this property unique

I designed this home myself with some valuable input from Raoul Hennin of Montsweg Brook Corporation. When I walked down the road I realized how beautiful this old neighborhood is. The trees, the homes, the wildflowers and ferns on the side of the road. A lovely short walk downhill will lead you to water in either of two different directions. A wonderful spot for my next home. Families on Chebeague have been here through generations. The family I bought my first house from had built it in 1855. They are still here. Even the summer people have been coming to the island for generations and most own historic summer homes here over generations.

This new house is completely modern post and beam with state of the art energy efficient appliances, passive solar, covered porch and designed with a nod to the surrounding homes which are New England farmhouse or Island Cottage style. It is furnished with a mix of antiques and modern furniture. Colors are muted and lend a warm comforting ambience to the rooms.

The property has a mature beech grove on the east side of the house. There is forested wetlands including streams to the west. Many interesting plants and animals live here. If you stand in a special spot on the property there is a water view.

My children kayak over in the summer to visit. We have offered a four person golf cart for transportation in the past. The island has many golf carts in the summer.

The house has views of slightly different types of forest from every spot you stand or bathe. The covered wrap around porch is inviting in all kinds of weather. The house is climate controlled. A walk in the woods or down the hill erases all stress.
