About this property

Private Cottage in Quiet Woods near Acadia National Park & Bar Harbor

Leave the hectic world behind and come to Maine to relax in this quiet cottage in the woods near Acadia National Park. Just 10 minutes to Bar Harbor, 6 minutes to the Park Entrance and Information Center, and 7 minutes to the Hadley Point Beach for swimming, boating, and picnicking.

The master bedroom has a queen size, cushion top mattress and a hand-made lighthouse quilt. The room features nautical-themed decor and a private bathroom with shower and abundant towel racks. Relax in the sitting area or write a postcard at the desk. An overhead fan supplies a gentle breeze.

Light cascades into the second bedroom with its single and bunk, all twin extra-long beds. Cuddle up under the quilts or write letters at the desk. The adjacent bath with tub/shower also serves the living room.

The living area has a pillow-filled sofa suitable for napping, easy chair, and a flat screen TV with Home Theater Surround Sound, Cable, and DVD/CD player. A wide variety of movies are also available from the Jesup Memorial Library in Bar Harbor. You can play with games and toys or savor a book from our library which has everything from mysteries to histories, biology to biography.

The living area opens to the fully equipped kitchen with its refrigerator/freezer, electric stove and oven, separate convection microwave, toaster, blenders, and large sink with dishwasher. Chefs will enjoy the full supply of pans, pots, (including a lobster pot!), cooking utensils, dishware, flatware, coffee pot, and ash picnic basket. As you sit at the oak dining table, sipping your morning coffee or tea, looking out the picture window, you may spot birds, squirrels, or an occasional deer or fox. You may prefer taking breakfast on the front porch before heading out for a day of hiking in the Park or sightseeing and shopping in the quaint towns of Mount Desert Island.

In the evening, enjoy rocking on the front porch or solving jigsaw puzzles at the game table. There you may catch the lovely scent of balsam fir and drink in the exquisite tranquility of Maine at its best.

Children welcome. No pets. Non-smoking.

About the host

Hosted by James & Marilyn Kitler

Host profile image
We are Mainers - although we are, in local parlance, from away. Marilyn first came to her family's cabins in Maine as an infant. James came when he started dating Marilyn. We have come every summer since 1967 and settled here in 2002, drawn by the area's natural beauty and its vibrant, richly varied community. It always has been a respite from our busy careers as schoolteacher and engineer/investment analyst.

Why they chose this property

The Kerr Cottage has been a family summer camp since the 1930s, loved for its proximity to Acadia National Park. What can top a picnic on the rocks beyond Thunder Hole, where you can watch the powerful waves spray foam on the shore? In 2012 James and his cousins from California initiated a major project to rehabilitate and expand the Kerr Cottage, transforming and bringing it to modern standards of comfort and convenience. It is now a bright, airy cottage, a private refuge near Frenchman's Bay.

What makes this property unique

The Kerr Cottage is a place for families to gather and enjoy each others' company. There are quiet corners in which to read a book, rock in a chair, or work a puzzle. Social spaces in the kitchen, living room and front porch provide comfortable spaces for eating, conversation, playing board games, or enjoying the AV system It is in the woods, sheltered and shaded by trees, but convenient to the small towns of Mount Desert Island and the Acadia National Park.
