Janine & Tim were excellent hosts, always available when needed but not invasive or overwhelming. The kitchen was well appointed making it very easy to use. I suffer from Parkinson’s and I appreciated the handles on the shower. Overall, the cabin enhance our enjoyment.
Your unexpected journey brings you to a cabin that is filled with special Oakenshield touches outside and inside. We loved the pergola outdoor dining, the animals that welcomed us each morning, and the peace and serenity of a fire pit with water features surrounding. The inside is immaculate and provides visitors with a wealth of information. We cannot wait to return and Tim and Janine are simply amazing!

Thank you so much Carrie! You guys were fantastic guests!
We were so impressed by Oakenshield cabin! The building was so well done, the cabin is extremely cozy. The kitchen was very well put together, with everything we could want to cook our own meals. The bedrooms were warm and cozy. The hosts were warm, friendly, and extremely accommodating. We loved meeting the animals! Also hearing all about the conservation efforts of Green Man Farm. The grounds were lovely and romantic. We had such an amazing time, and can't wait to be back again in the future.
Our stay at this spectacular cabin was unforgettable from the moment we arrived. Oakenshield was everything we hoped for, and so much more! Beautiful wildflowers and water features lined the path to the cabin, and the exquisite carved door was a perfect prelude to what lay inside—a breathtaking blend of rustic warmth and modern luxury.Every detail of the interior was thoughtfully curated. The floor-to-ceiling windows framed serene forest views, and the comfortable bedrooms, located on opposite ends of the cabin, provided excellent privacy. Each bedroom featured its own balcony with seating and plenty of closet storage. The beds and linens were exceptionally comfortable—it truly felt like sleeping on a cloud. The bathroom was spacious and bright, stocked with plenty of fluffy towels. In the kitchen, we found high-end appliances and absolutely everything needed to prepare a great meal. The entire home was absolutely pristine. The outdoor amenities were equally magical. A lovely gazebo offered a peaceful spot to sip morning coffee while hummingbirds visited the overflowing pots of vibrant flowers. Adirondack chairs surround a fire pit, perfect for evening relaxation. Our hosts, Janine and Tim, were incredibly accommodating. They took the time to share the fascinating history of the estate and introduced us to the "gang" keeping a watchful eye on the place—the llamas, a goat, chickens, and turkeys! We enjoyed the heated pool- cozy lighting made our night swim incredibly relaxing.
The Oakenshield Cabin is just as amazing as the pictures! We loved our time at this beautiful cabin. It was very clean with extremely comfortable furniture & beds. Nicely stocked kitchen. All the rooms are well organized with good space for all yr traveling luggage. I loved the large windows and waking up to the gorgeous woods in the mountains. Nice fire-pit and setting areas all around the cabin. Our pups loved the fully fenced pasture where they could run free. We enjoyed playing with them and watching the animals on The Greenman Farm. We would love to come back, get snowed in (snowmobile ) and put to use the “emergency s’mores” stashed in the kitchen! Janine & Tim are great hosts and we look forward to seeing them again.
Oakenshield is the most charming & cozy & remote place we’ve found on VRBO! The cottage is thoroughly outfitted and totally comfortable. It is the kind of place you can go off-line … in comfort … for days! More so, it’s totally dog friendly … and you know how us dog owners are about traveling with our dogs. Then there’s the fact that Greenman Farms has a whole host of cool animals to check out up close and personal (our dog freaked over the turkeys). Honestly, Janine & Tim are the best VRBO hosts we’ve experienced. They go totally out of the way to make your stay special. It’s like they feel it a sacred duty to share their slice of heaven with the hoi polloi! Finally, we adore the Lake George area … the hiking opportunities are endless … and the rivers and creeks and waterfalls and wildlife are exceptional … and yet you are close to the village of Lake George which has all the trappings of an exceptional tourist destination. We will be back … again … and again! Thanks for having us Janine & Tim! Recommendations: Rockwell Falls in Hadley … Hike Buttermilk Brook to the Bear Slides … Hike to The Pinnacle & Bradley’s Lookout (overlooking Bolton Landing) … Lakeside lunch at The Algonquin in Bolton Landing (dog friendly) … Fort Wiliam Henry … Fort Ticonderoga

About the host
Hosted by Janine Van Norman
Tim and Janine are retired U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service wildlife biologists who spent their careers working on international wildlife issues. They bought a 617 acre property in the Adirondacks to fulfill their dream of living sustainably, growing their own food using permaculture practices, and learning forest farming.

Why they chose this property
We chose Stony Creek because we love the mountains, and the year-round beauty of the Adirondacks. The Adirondacks have a "forever wild" clause that ensures they will be protected from over-development in perpetuity, which we love.
What makes this property unique
Our 617 acre property is at least 150 years old, with one family owning it as a family camp for ~80 years. We have a New York State designated trout stream, a pond (with baby trout!) and a gorgeous view of Bald Head Mountain just outside of the cabin. It truly is the perfect place to go play at Lake George or surrounding areas, and then come home to a relaxing, rustic retreat, with all the amenities of home.
