We’re glad you enjoyed visits from our 3 rescue donkeys— offering them the treats provided for guests has become a favorite tradition for our visitors. They are rescue donkeys who have found their forever home here and are now a beloved part of the property.
Thank you for sharing your experience. We hope this helps future guests discover what a memorable stay this can be!
Warm regards,
Carol and Robert Winter, Johnson’s Cabin at Winters Haven
We loved our stay! The cabin was cozy, exceptionally clean, and looked exactly as described in the pictures. The view of rolling green pastures, cows, and 3 sweet rescue donkeys was extremely peaceful. Carol and Robert were wonderful, attentive hosts. The extra touches, such as farm-fresh eggs and biscuits, along with honey and sweet treats for our anniversary, made us feel especially welcome. Our stay at Winters Haven was truly a tranquil retreat, loving it so much we booked a weekend in the fall before leaving.
Winter's Haven is a great place to stay. The cabin had all the amenities of home. The peaceful serenity of this charming cabin offers the ability to relax and unwind in solitude while still being close to area attractions. We would definitely love to stay here again

We at Winters Haven, love it when our guests are happy!
Selected this VRBO due to its proximity to the Appalachian Trail and extending a couple additional nights because we were enjoying it so much. The hosts were fantastic and readily available for anything we needed. The home was cozy and comfortable and the hosts had it stocked with everything we could need. The scenery around the home was picturesque. One of the best VRBOs we have stayed at.

This property was wonderful and was more than what was in its descriptions. It has beautiful views and though out of town and remote very easy to get to the hiking areas nearby including Grayson and Mount Rogers. The owners were awesome and responded to every inquiry very promptly and thoroughly. Couldn't recommend this place any higher

Thank you for booking with Winters Haven, we are happy you enjoyed your stay and hope you can visit again soon!
We came up for our anniversary. The cabin was exactly what we were looking for. It felt remote but was convenient to several towns. The owner/manager had the home ready for us with surprise treats to celebrate our anniversary. She was very communicative, and made us feel cared for as if we were staying in a bed-and-breakfast. The GPS doesn’t give correct directions once you get off the main road. There were directional signs that were very helpful along with the directions provided. We look forward to staying again!
The cabin was warmed by a cozy fireplace upon our arrival on a wet, cold night. The beds and sofas all had electrical blankets if needed. We even enjoyed the little heating unit in the bathroom. We appreciated great water pressure and plenty of hot water for showering. Everything was so clean and absolutely the most stunning view from the front porch. We only had a tiny bit of trouble operating the splits heater unit but that’s on us. I highly recommend this gorgeous, safe, quiet, comfortable, clean cabin with such gracious hosts.
My partner and I couldn't think more highly of this property. The cabin is very comfortable, clean, and well-kept. It was such a nice convenience to have a washer/drier on hand after hiking the AT for a day. The communication with the owner was clear and the check-in process was smooth. There is ample signage to help guests find the cabin on the scenic drive into the property. The views are beautiful, overlooking a field with mountains in the distance. We especially enjoyed seeing the cows and donkeys, and loved feeding the donkeys a few carrots. The property is so peaceful, and it was really the perfect spot to come and relax for a week. We would absolutely like to stay here again the next time we're in the area!

Thank you for choosing Winter’s Haven. We hope to see you again soon!
One of the warmest welcomes I've had at a rental! Carol and Robert were spectacular hosts. When we arrived we found fresh cookies set out for us, a little jar of local honey, eggs and biscuits in the fridge, and a sweet welcome note. The cabin itself was gorgeous - small enough to be cozy but open enough to not feel cramped. The holiday decorations were a nice touch. The kitchen was well stocked. We had everything we needed to cook our own meals and bake our own cookies. There was a bit of a delay in being able to use the fireplace because the propane delivery truck was later than anticipated, but there were plenty of heaters in the cabin, along with electric blankets, that kept us warm and comfortable. Carol was extremely responsive and kept us informed without any issue. We had no cell service (Verizon and AT&T) but the wi-fi was plenty strong for our needs. The view was spectacular, and even though the donkeys never came close to visit with us, we enjoyed watching them in the distance and appreciated that there were treats available for them on the porch. Thank you for the wonderful stay!

Why they chose this property
Located in foothills of the Appalachian mountains, this area is very beautiful and the seasons are very distinct. Our place is very rural, quiet and peaceful while still having the convenience of town only 10 miles away. You will not hear any highway noise, only the sound of the local wildlife echoing in the mountains.
What makes this property unique
Johnson’s Cabin at Winters Haven is nestled on almost 18 acres of partially wooded land in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. There are walking paths through the wooded areas, one path leads to a pond where you may find wild ducks in the spring time. While the property is secluded it is only about 10 miles from the quaint town of Chilhowie where you can find a couple of eateries, antique shops and a grocery store. There are several trailheads just a few miles away for hikers. The towns of Abingdon and Damascus are fun to explore and are only 20 and 30 miles away.
