About this property

Historic Burren Farmhouse near Flaggy Shore | Hot Tub, Sauna & Galway Bay Views

Escape to Bayfield House, a beautifully restored 200-year-old farmhouse overlooking Galway Bay, surrounded by the extraordinary landscape of the Burren on Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way.

Set within three acres of gardens and farmland, Bayfield combines the character and warmth of a much-loved family home with the space needed for families and groups to holiday together. Guests can now also enjoy a private wood-fired hot tub and sauna, making the house just as special for cosy autumn and winter stays as it is in summer.

The sea, the Flaggy Shore and one of the area's best-known seafood restaurants are all just a short walk away. A sandy beach is approximately five minutes from the house and leads directly onto the spectacular Flaggy Shore, with its beautiful coastal road and uninterrupted views across Galway Bay.

THE HOUSE

Bayfield is spacious without ever feeling formal. It has been furnished and used as our family holiday home, rather than simply as a rental property, and we hope guests feel at home from the moment they arrive.

The main house accommodates up to 12 guests and includes:

• Three spacious en-suite king bedrooms
• One twin bedroom
• One family bedroom with a double bed and bunk beds
• Cot available on request

An adjoining studio annex can accommodate a further two guests, allowing Bayfield to sleep up to 14 people in total.

The large, well-equipped kitchen has a generous breakfast table and connects through a bar to the main dining and sitting room, creating a wonderfully sociable heart to the house.

The dining table comfortably seats a large group, while the sitting area has a wood-burning stove and beautiful views across the orchard towards the Burren Hills and Galway Bay.

There is also a separate television room, ideal for children or for anyone wanting a quieter space, as well as a small upstairs reading area overlooking the fields and the bay.

PRIVATE HOT TUB & SAUNA

A new addition to Bayfield is the outdoor hot tub and sauna, set within the grounds of the house.

After a long walk along the Flaggy Shore or a day exploring the Burren, guests can return to the house and relax in the hot tub or unwind in the warmth of the sauna, surrounded by the peace and open landscape of the west of Ireland.

These facilities make Bayfield particularly enjoyable outside the summer months, when evenings can be spent warming up outdoors before heading inside to the fire and a long dinner around the table.

THREE ACRES TO ENJOY

Much of the pleasure of staying at Bayfield comes from simply spending time outside.

The house sits within approximately three acres of lawns, orchard, wild garden and farmland. Behind the house, the large lawned orchard provides plenty of space to relax and play, while the garden room opens directly onto the garden.

There are several lovely places to sit outside, including a terrace with panoramic views across the surrounding countryside. The BBQ area looks over the fields and trees towards Galway Bay.

Bayfield is surrounded by working farmland, with cattle and sheep grazing nearby, giving the house its wonderfully rural character.

NEW QUAY & THE FLAGGY SHORE

Despite its peaceful setting, Bayfield is not isolated.

The tiny coastal hamlet of New Quay is around a five-minute walk away. Here you will find Linnane's, a renowned seafood restaurant overlooking the water, as well as the nearby Russell Gallery.

The Flaggy Shore is virtually on the doorstep and is one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the Burren. Walk along the shore, explore the rock pools with children, go crabbing at the pier or simply watch the light change across Galway Bay.

The lively coastal villages of Kinvara and Ballyvaughan are both within easy driving distance.

EXPLORE THE BURREN & WEST OF IRELAND

Bayfield is exceptionally well placed for discovering this part of Ireland.

The Burren is famous for its remarkable limestone landscape, wildflowers, archaeological sites and walking trails. There are wonderful walks straight from the house, ranging from gentle coastal strolls to more challenging walks through the Burren hills.

Some of the West of Ireland's best-known attractions are also within easy reach, including:

• The Cliffs of Moher
• Doolin
• The Aran Islands
• Galway City
• Lahinch
• The Burren National Park
• Ancient ring forts, castles and Neolithic sites

Ferries to the Aran Islands depart regularly from Doolin, approximately 35 minutes away by car.

Golfers are particularly well served, with excellent courses throughout County Clare and the surrounding region, while Lahinch is also one of Ireland's best-known surfing destinations.

A PLACE TO SLOW DOWN

There is plenty to explore, but Bayfield is equally suited to doing very little.

Have breakfast overlooking the garden, walk down to the sea, spend an afternoon reading beside the fire or in the orchard, relax in the hot tub or sauna, enjoy dinner together around the large table and end the day watching the changing light over Galway Bay.

Whether you are gathering several generations of a family, travelling with friends or simply looking for somewhere beautiful to escape to on Ireland's west coast, Bayfield offers space, privacy and a very special sense of place.

What an ideal home for our family of 14! We were a bit concerned about the distance from Galway but proximity to the sea, hiking, quaint towns and restaurants more than made up for it. For a 200 year old home, it was well furnished and equipped so met our needs.

Bayfield House was the perfect location for our family vacation with 10 people. The kitchen was very well appointed, the beds were really comfortable, and we had the quiet we wanted while being only 15 minutes from Kinvara and Ballyvaughan. It's a great location for exploring the west coast, from Galway City to Doolin and Lahinch. Maxx and Carmel were super responsive when we had a little issue. None of us wanted to leave! P.S. Sunday sauna with Ian at Flaggy Shores beach is not to be missed.

Great location for the Flaggy Shore and Linane's Lobster bar and a perfecdt size for our party of 3 families. The interior could do with some refreshment as it seems to be the same as when we were at the property nearly 30 years ago! There was also a smell of damp in one of the downstairs bedrooms but the family was ok with it for a week.

We were joined by the larger family for an afternoon and the house was a huge hit. The children loved the spacious garden and we all enjoyed the hidden patio where could all sit around the stone table and chat in the evening sun.

Xmas with family

We spent a lovely week over Xmas at Bayfield House. Beautiful location and property with lots to see and do within an hour’s drive. The owner was always quick to respond before and during the stay, and very helpful with suggestions for activities, restaurants etc. He went above and beyond to proved a Xmas tree with lights to help us celebrate the holiday. I highly recommend Bayfield House for any large group looking to enjoy Clare and Galway.

Comfortable house in beautiful surroundings

We very much enjoyed our stay at the Bayfield house - it is nice and comfortable for a party of 12 to 14. Some things would require mending (lights in the bathrooms!) and at peak times the water pressure was so low that the bedrooms upstairs had no water, but with some practice we all managed to have a shower. The area is great with many sightseeing and activity options, besides the beaches!

A beautiful place for a family gathering

Bayfield House is located on the beautiful Flaggy Shore, in the heart of the magnificent Burren - perfect for daily walks and hikes. The house is warm and welcoming, with lots of space for our party of 14 - adults and teenagers. We could all gather together comfortably in the large living and dining room, and those who wanted a quiet reading or chatting space also found many a cosy corner. Special touches include the wood-burning stove in the living room, the reading room on the first-floor landing, and the Christmas tree and lights provided by our host on request. We will definitely be back!

Making Memories

Bay field House was amazing. It was welcoming and comfortable for all 15 family members. Each bedroom and bath en suite was clean and cozy. The family room was huge with plenty of seating. A large farmhouse table sat almost all of us. Loved the little reading nook on the second floor with fabulous views. The grounds were lovely and we had family pics taken on the grounds. Short walk to the bay, Linanne’s restaurant and a relaxing stroll on the roads. Kinverra is 15 minutes away for market shopping. Thank you for sharing your wonderful home with us. Highly recommend. What a lovely house!

What a lovely location!! We had two families with young kids, ages 2-5, for a total of 11 people. The views were amazing, beds were comfortable and the house was very spacious. There were helpful notes all over the house guiding us on how things operated, light switch locations, etc. The back yard was so inviting, we had many meals outside while the kids ran around, climb trees and explore. The cows and horses across the street were entertaining and friendly. We LOVED walking to Linnaine’s; the food was delicious, people were friendly and the kids enjoyed throwing rocks into the ocean and watching the fisherman on the dock. We had many day trips and explored the Flagg Shore and trails. Overall we absolutely loved the house, location and people and are so greatful for staying in such a great place.

Bayfield House is great in every way, especially for a large group

This was a 3-generation family gathering, so 10 adults (20-70), 2 teens, and 3 children (11, 9, 3). There are two excellent gathering spaces, one big enough to accommodate all 15 comfortably when necessary--and we squeezed 15 around the table for some meals--and a smaller room with a large TV, which we designated as the devices room in order to keep the larger room device-free. Communication with the owner was quick and always helpful. We slept comfortably. The grounds are beautiful and spacious, accommodating a few family football matches; the Flaggy Shore is a short walk away and endlessly fascinating, leading on to a scenic one-lane coast road great for walking. While we used Bayfield House as our base for exploring the greater Burren area, down to Ennis, across to Miltown Malbay, and up to Doolin and Ballvaughan, really you wouldn't need to do much more than wander the little peninsula west of New Quay to have a rich and relaxing holiday. And it starts with Bayfield House.

Best house in the Burren!

I cannot overstate how amazing Bayfield house is. Our multi-generational family was perfectly at home in the generous layout of the house. The annex provided a quiet and separate space for our children to have fun while the adults relaxed in the great room. Every room was appointed nicely, and the en suite bathrooms were wonderful. Everything in the kitchen is labeled well which was helpful while moving about. The outside space is just phenomenal. The yard is perfectly maintained, and I cannot describe the sense of peace that surrounds you while sitting outside. It is perfectly situated- there is a darling gallery/coffee/wine shop at the end of the road, and the Galway Bay beach is just a few yards away. Kinvara, Ballyvaughan, the Cliffs of Moher, and Doolin, with all they have to offer, are all within a 45 minute drive. The owner, Maxx, was incredibly kind and helpful and answered any questions we had very promptly. I cannot overstate what a wonderful holiday we had. Thank you, Bayfield House!

Home Away From Home

Second stay at Bayfield with extended family ( 8 of us ) and still one of our favorite places in Ireland. Very affordable for a larger group with 5 spacious bedrooms and 4 baths. Well appointed kitchen so cooking was enjoyable and the large farmhouse table there became our central gathering place. Evenings were spent in the comfortable living room with a nice fire and good selection of movies. The grounds are beautiful with a charming raised picnic area overlooking views of the distant hills and glimpses of the sea. An enclosed yard gave our little 3 and 5 year olds the freedom to come and go on their own and a safe area to play. Watching the sun rise from the glassed in sun porch was a treat. A lovely rural area just a very short stroll from the Flaggy Shore and well located for day trips to the many enchantments of the Burren and major sights such as the Cliffs of Moher, golf, Aran Island ferries, Ailwee Bird Sanctuary and Caves, Galway, Ennis, a lovely art gallery-coffee shop and restaurant just steps away and smaller charming villages. We hope to return again to our Irish home away from home.

Idyllic Farm Hose

The property is surrounded by farms, and just minutes from the water. There is a huge backyard with a bbq, and large seating area. The family room also has lots of seating plus a table that could easily seat 14-15. The bedrooms are all big and ensuite. Max, the owner is great. He responds within an hour, and reached out several times before and during our stay to make sure all is well. We needed help a couple of times while staying there and the caretaker, Mike, responded immediately and came over within 10 minutes. Four generations of my family stayed here comfortably for 4 nights.

About the host

Hosted by Max

Host profile image

Bayfield is very much a family place for us.

We live in Devon with our two daughters, Aurelia and Azzurra, and divide much of our holiday time between Bayfield and Rome, where Beatrice is from. For us, they are two of the most beautiful places in the world.

Bayfield has been in Max's family for generations. He spent his childhood holidays here with his parents, brothers and sisters, playing in the surrounding fields and swimming from the Flaggy Shore.

When Max's mother took over the house from his Great Uncle Edward, it had fallen badly into disrepair. The thatched roof had collapsed, the doors and windows had rotted away and cattle were using parts of the building for shelter. With enormous care, she restored and extended the farmhouse, creating the home we know and love today.

We still return as often as we can and enjoy Bayfield in every season. We love the walks, the food, the pubs, the people and the ever-changing weather. We often spend Christmas and New Year here too, when the Burren feels wonderfully atmospheric.

Max is also a keen sailor and has sailed extensively around Galway Bay and along the Wild Atlantic Way, including taking part in the Galway to Aran Islands Race.

We hope you enjoy Bayfield as much as our family has over the generations.

Max, Beatrice, Aurelia and Azzurra

Why they chose this property

We didn't really choose Bayfield — in many ways, Bayfield chose us.

The house was built by our Great Great Grandfather more than 150 years ago and has remained in the family ever since. Originally a working farmhouse, it has evolved over generations into the family home it is today.

Our Great Uncle Edward Hynes, an artist and illustrator who worked for American and European publications, lived at Bayfield for many years. What is now the main sitting room was once his studio, and you will still find copies of his drawings and cartoons around the house.

We grew up coming here for holidays and now bring our own children, so Bayfield feels less like a property and more like another member of the family.

What keeps drawing us back is the landscape and the way of life: the Flaggy Shore, Galway Bay, the Burren hills, the walks, the local pubs and restaurants, and the warmth of the people who live here.

It is peaceful and rural, but never dull. Every season feels different, and the light, weather and sea are constantly changing.

What makes this property unique

Bayfield offers something increasingly rare: space, character, privacy and a genuine sense of place.

The house, bedrooms and gardens are all exceptionally spacious, and there are several separate living areas. Even when the house is full, everyone can find somewhere quiet to read, relax or spend time apart.

One feature families particularly appreciate is that the main sitting and dining room sits slightly apart from the sleeping areas, connected by a short hallway. Adults can stay up later without disturbing sleeping children, while early-rising children can do the same in the morning.

Outside, Bayfield sits within approximately three acres of gardens, orchard and farmland, surrounded by grazing cattle and sheep and with views towards Galway Bay and the Burren.

The sea is so close that we often walk down to the beach with a morning coffee — and it is still warm when we arrive.

The private hot tub and sauna add another way to enjoy the setting, particularly after a long coastal walk or on cooler evenings.

But what really makes Bayfield special is that it has never been created simply as a holiday rental. It is a much-loved family home, full of history, memories and character, and we hope guests feel that as soon as they arrive.
