About this property

Glamping, Goats & Pool Mountainside NEAR Va Tech, RU, AT & I81, pet friendly

The Roam Inn delivers Boho Glamping & Farm-Fun adventures at Big Cedars Farm. This camper travelled the Oregon Trail...yep, toured it, AND was featured on a blog...before she was set here-- nestled on the plateau we call Billy Goat Bluff. A "Tiny House" original, your memorable stay includes: friendly animal interactions, morning sunrises from our updated 1959 Dalton "Canned Ham," breathtaking views from the outdoor kitchen, electricity, water and even a hot shower at the hobbit-styled privy. Just 20 min from the AT, 5 miles from downtown Blacksburg and as short drive thru the historic Ellett Valley farmland from Christiansburg and Radford.

A memorable stay awaits at this one-of-a-kinds glamping escape in a 1959 Dalton Canned Ham Camper. Watch your head... it's not for tall people without a bit of ducking-- but it is the perfect spot to get away and experience nature without all the hassles of traditional camping.

The Roam Inn is one of 3 offerings we feature at Big Cedars Farm.

The land we call Big Cedars farm has been owned by my family since the 1940's. At one point my grandfather actually owned the entire mountain. We are just minutes from town located in historically protected region of Ellett Valley and just minutes from downtown Blacksburg and Virginia Tech. It's the perfect spot to be "near town" yet embrace nature and the surrounding valley mountains

Located on back-side of Blacksburg Mountain, along Mossyspring Creek overlooking Paris Mountain, this 5 acres farm features opportunities for private events, memorable hospitality experiences, stunning views, a relaxing retreat and farm adventures abound.

Each hospitality space on the farm is different...

The RoamINN is cute and quaint-- great for those who like to be cozy.

For more traditional accommodations try The Wandering Goat Lodge. The lodge sleeps 6 and can accommodate more upon request in the 1,740 sq ft PRIVATE access 2 bedroom, 1 bath + Sleeper sofa lower apartment. There is plenty of space for air mattresses and room to entertain inside around the bar and full kitchen.

About the host

Hosted by Warren Neily

Host profile image
Warren and Sylvia are both Blacksburg natives. One stayed in the area, one left. Now we are both engaged and here to welcome you. Take the time to experience a morning sunrise poolside with the goats, take a stroll along the rolling valley landscapes or sit on the beautiful creek-side beach. At Big Cedars Farm you are close to nature, and yet minutes to town at the same time. We love it here, in Ellett Valley and after living elsewhere, we both think it's the perfect balance of close to people/town of Blacksburg + 100% submerged in Mountains and natural beauty.

Why they chose this property

Tradition & Fate.
Warren’s Grandfather purchased the farm of more than 80 acres in 1941. He lived in the main house on the right as you enter and managed the farm. Warren grew up staying with his grandparents and visiting the property daily.

Fast forward… Warren purchased a track of undeveloped land across the field from his Grandfather, got some goats and eventually built the main house. He ”coined” and opened the Wandering Goat Lodge in 2018 as a modest b&b.

In 2020, Warren and Sylvia, two high-school friends, re-connected after nearly 40 years for a beer. With so many similar interests, the sparks were immediate! Their first project together – was to create Mossy Spring Beach based on Warren’s childhood imagination and dreams.

During Covid we ramped up the overnight stays and started managing overnights full time.

From there, the inspirations and special places on the property have happened by ”mistake” or possibly “loose” planning along the way. Whenever possible, we are always considering re-purposed materials found as “junk” or discarded and gathered. Many of the antiques you encounter are family pieces and reflect a craftsmanship not found at IKEA.

We are told this place is “magical.”
Someone else claimed– “it’s not a hotel, it’s more of an experience.

We hope that you will spend quiet time throughout the property. Take in the views. Feed the animals and fully enjoy everything that Big Cedars Farm has to offer.

What makes this property unique

NATURE. ANIMALS. CHARM. The beauty & the mountains are Breathtaking.

Adventure begins from the minute you turn off the main road and make your approach to the farm...Cows on the right, goats on the left... take the rustic drive to the top, and find a hidden beach tucked along the creek or take the main drive and the animals will greet you as you unpack your vehicle...it's part of our farm ambience and what makes the Roam Inn and Big Cedars Farm special.

You will have the entire camper and kitchen area for your stay.
Bonfire area in front of the RoamINN will also be yours for private use.

You are free to roam the property to interact with the animals in pens further toward the main lodge.

Hiking is allowed on Mossy Spring road and continues for a mile to the top of Blacksburg Mountain-- ask and we can guide you

Other things to note
Feeding animals is FUN and encouraged.
Please keep fingers together and palms flat and low-- this is the safest way to deliver food. ( make your hand a slightly cupped "bowl") You are at your own risk around the animals. Do not enter pens. Watch your fingers please.

Be mindful of the land. Please use the soaps provided.
The water is potable at the Camper Kitchen.

PLEASE...
respect the septic systems in our valley... and do not flush any feminine products down the Privy toilet.

Please note that even though we are rural we actually have FIBER OPTIC Internet installed Jan 2021 with speeds faster than Blacksburg so downloading movies or working remotely will be no problem.

We are pet friendly.
We encourage farm animal interaction between the fences with the goats and donkeys and offer bags of grain for you to use. In addition to the pool, other "resort-like" experiences can be added to your stay. We host Yoga classes on site each Wednesday. Enjoy options including: in-pen cuddling or feeding interactions, or a host-escorted ATV ride to the top of the ridge-- ask for details.
