Dordogne - Charente Border Charming, tranquil country house with heated pool
Nestled in a beautiful valley, yet near towns and villages of charm and historical interest, Les Etables is a lovingly-restored four bedroom, two bathroom barn full of period charm with exposed beams and stone walls in two hectares of land. Two double bedrooms, one twin-bedded and one single, a large sitting and dining room, and superb kitchen. Ideal for a family - or two - with a spectacular heated swimming pool (12m x 6m not including Roman end) and large terrace overlooking the house and surrounding countryside.
There are two staircases, each with two bedrooms and a bathroom. The kitchen is fully-equipped with cooker, microwave, dishwasher and washing machine. There is a washing line discretely sited outside.
An area of softly undulating sunflower fields with Italian style villages perched on hilltops, this area of France is little known and has many treasures to share with its few travellers. L´Etable is close to the beautiful village of Aubeterre, with its boutiques and restaurants lining the square, market and ancient troglodyte church. Canoeing on the Dronne river, Cognac, Bordeaux, St Emilion, Brantome, Bergerac, Perigueux and all the sites of the Dordogne are on the doorstep.
Les Etables was formerly the stable for the adjacent walnut mill. It has been renovated sympathetically and to a very high standard. A shallow stream and large willow trees border the road and the back of the Moulin (main mill house). There is a trampoline with net at the back of the Moulin which you are welcome to use but please do not let young children access that part of the garden unsupervised.
The adjacent house, Le Moulin, is occupied by the owners during the summer and not rented out. There is also a large field at the back of the Moulin, which is ideal for playing games and running off steam. Outside of the high season, you will be met by an agent who lives just 10 minutes drive away, and is easily contactable during your stay should you have any questions or need any help.
The nearest airports are Bergerac, Bordeaux and Limoges. There is a train station in the local town, Montmoreau St Cybard - 7km away. Trains run between Bordeaux and Angouleme, but are not frequent. Both Angouleme and Bordeaux are TGV stops with good access from Paris and the Eurostar. However you are advised that a car is desirable if staying at Les Etables. Cars can be rented at all airports and at Angouleme train station.

We would love to have you and your family back again, Diana. We do hope you will come. And thank you for leaving the house so clean and tidy. Pool house number two with the kitchen, fridge, deep freeze will definitely be finished by next summer, so drinks and ice creams by the pool will be very easy.
And don’t forget to check out our lovely new (old) house just outside Aubeterre, Manoir de la Sauzade, which is a beautiful property dating from the 1700s. It is spacious and perfect for large family groups. VRBO ID no:11285989
We had a wonderful stay here. Pamela sent us really detailed arrival information. The house is lovely and clean, and we loved the pool. We enjoyed chatting with Pamela and Michael, who were both very friendly and helpful.
We enjoyed trips to Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, St Emillion, the cartoon museum in Angoulême and Blaye.
We had a fantastic holiday all thanks to our wonderful hosts who always went beyond to help us . We arrived very late and they gave us something to eat , they helped with cooking events and eateries. The accommodation was amazing . The kitchen had everything you need and more . An extra addition was the beautiful friendly cats that would visit us every day . It was a delight to have you with us. So glad you enjoyed your holiday. Still full of admiration for your energy and get-up-and-go-during the heatwave. Looking forward to tasting your Clootie McToot dumpling. Hoping to see you all again another year. Come for longer next time! Thank you for leaving everything so tidy.
We stayed for a family holiday, family of six, us and two boys (aged 10 and 13 years) plus grandparents.
The house is beautiful, spacious and comfortable living/dining room and kitchen with everything you need. We cooked most evenings, everything easy to use, and had a bbq. Lovely furniture and garden furniture. Pretty bedrooms with exposed beams, we took the bedrooms on one side of the house with the boys and my parents had the bedrooms on the other side of the house, with their own shower room.
The garden area is great, we played cricket in the evenings, by the fruit trees. We also made fruit crumbles!
The pool is big and a lovely heat, even though the weather was changeable, the cover kept the heat in overnight. The pool lights also made it great for evening pool fun.
We visited the local zip line park, which was amazing and challenging, the boys were very impressed. The Dordogne Archery and air guns is highly recommended. Also we visited Aubeterre which was pretty, the cave/church which was interesting and the lake beach. The Boheme crazy golf was also funny.
A great holiday home, thank you.

Thank you, Holly. I am so glad you had a good time and found plenty to do, not least using up some of our fruit glut.
We hope to welcome you back some time.
A very special place, which we highly recommend. Photos can't do this wonderful place justice!
Rolling fields of sunflowers and big blue skies envelop this idyllic old mill and the leafy dell in which it sits. Hosts Pamela and Michael have done a superb job of renovating their summer home and the adjacent L'Etable into an oasis of tranquility. As others have said, the L'Etable is tastefully decorated and furnished, and very well equipped. We stayed during a heat wave (mid to high 30s) so the floor standing fans were very much appreciated. We all enjoyed spending time in the pool, which sits above the house and L'Etable...views are spectacular, especially in the evening as the sun sets.
We couldn't have asked for more welcoming hosts. They were happy to provide recommendations of where to eat, and places to visit. We enjoyed an afternoon canoeing on the Dronne; a visit to Aubeterre (which is a must) and it's underground church, Sunday market and Poterie de la Passiflore; a trip to the inflatables at Plan d'Eau de La Grande Prairie, a cognac tour at Chateau des Plassons; a stroll around Chateau de la Mercerie; and a lovely evening meal at Le Lavalette in Villebois Lavalette.
Thank you Pamela, Michael and Lawrence...our family of seven (including 5 kids aged 8 through 19) had a wonderful stay in your beautiful L'Etable this summer.

So glad you had a good stay. It was lovely to meet and host you.
Pamela & Michael were welcome hosts, sharing their local knowledge and helping us to book some lovely places to eat.
The property is beautifully converted and was spacious, airy and cool.
The pool was fantastic, a big hit with the teenagers.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, thank you to the family for allowing us to share such a special place.
We really loved our stay here. The property is very tastefully renovated, has plenty of space and a great kitchen to cook in. The pool area and property grounds were also a big hit with the children. We even made an apple and plum crumble with fruit from the orchard!
A recommander
Lovely house with everything you need, great pool and very helpful hosts with two lovely cats! In peaceful countryside in a very pretty area of France. Struggled having no air con but apparently we experienced unusually hot weather when we were there!
A beautifully restored and tastefully furnished property which is deceptively spacious with lots of space and everything you need for a comfortable stay. Lovely large swimming pool with wonderful views over the countryside. We are a family of 5 (kids 9, 13 & 15) and everyone loved the house. Plenty of space outside for garden games and relaxing etc. We enjoyed barbecues, cycling the quiet roads, visiting nearby Aubeterre with its market, troglodyte church and fab swimming lake with park and cafe etc. We also visited Brantome about an hour away which was a very pretty town and we had fun canoeing around it! Pamela the owner was most helpful both before and during our stay which was the icing on the cake! Hope to return sometime and would certainly recommend.

Beautifully renovated property with large pool in a peaceful location.
Our family of 5 (parents and 3 teenagers) had a wonderful holiday in this property. The barn has been sympathetically renovated with all modern ammenities combined with open brick and beam decor. The pool is large and heated with obligatory adherence to French laws on safety. Great communication with owner who ensured everything ran smoothly including provision of lunch on our arrival which enabled our children to jump straight into the pool! As seasoned villa renters (17 years of experience), we would highly recommend this holiday home for families looking for a peaceful break in a beautiful setting.
