Lakefront Cottage on "Quietside" of Mt Desert Island facing Acadia National Park
PLEASE NOTE: Our cancellation policy is different from the one described by Vrbo. We will refund 100% of your deposit at any time, minus a $75.00 re-booking fee, if we can re-rent the same period as your booking to another renter. Please see the sample lease attached below. Located in Seal Cove on the "quiet " side of Mount Desert Island, this comfortable and completely furnished cottage on Hodgdon Pond Farm welcomes you to Acadia National Park. Located less than five miles from Somesville, in the center of Mt. Desert Island, it provides convenient access to other villages and Park entrances. The cottage has its own dock, a canoe, two kayaks, two stand-up paddle board, and a Walker Bay 8' rowboat with sail kit. The cottage can be rented in conjunction with Cottage 1 (44879), which is about 2/3rds of a football field down the pond. Cottage 2 is slightly larger than Cottage 1 because there is a dormer in the Master Bedroom that offers a view down the pond as well as windows that look up the pond. Because it is also on deeper water, the rent is slightly higher. The two cottages share a sitting and play area with swings and sandbox beside two small ponds as well as a field. We keep the lower section of the shared field mowed and there is a storage box of outdoor games for use in this area..
Occupancy is limited to six people, regardless of age, though there is a futon bed in the sleeping loft. We occasionally allow an additional occupant, but charge a fee of $200 for a seventh person.
Wherever possible, we use 'Green' cleaning products, provide supplies made from recycled paper, low-watt bulbs, and implement other ways to reduce our impact on the environment. The Maine Department of Environmental Protection has certified Hodgdon Pond Farm as an 'Environmental Leader.'

A great getaway yet close to all of Acadia
Our family has been coming to HPF for over 15 years. Our kids grew up hunting for frogs in the pond and learning to kayak.
The property is as advertised, well equipped, remote and well cared for. Each year there are upgrades to the cabins and the owner is very responsive and easy to deal with.
Several friends have joined us over the years, some even returning on their own.

Barbara has done a wonderful job making this cabin ideal for family getaways. Everything you may need is there. The kitchen is well equipped, and there are a variety of books and puzzles (which we enjoyed some nights). We’ve never been to Maine, and spent a lot of early mornings and evenings on the water fishing and kayaking. Beautiful views of the lake from the house. The cabin is located close to Acadia, so we spent many days hiking in the park and exploring the island. The week went by very fast. Highly recommended if you’re thinking about visiting Mt Desert Island!

I can’t say enough great things about this property and the owners. Every detail was thought of in this cottage. We have stayed at several different homes and this one by far ranks at the top. The photos don’t do it justice and there is a view from every room. Nothing was skipped on at this property the linens were outstanding, the kitchen pans were almost brand new, there are games, kayaks, lifejackets, fishing poles, and so much more. It’s on the South west side of The island and takes about 20 minutes to get to Cadillac Mountain and 25 minutes to get to downtown bar harbor. But the drive is totally worth the serenity and comforts of this cottage. Hopefully we will come back in the fall at some point and we will definitely stay here again!

Thank you so much for this lovely review! It was a pleasure meeting you and having you stay at Hodgdon Pond Farm. It means a lot to us that you enjoyed your vacation, and that you want to return!
All the best,

This cabin and the grounds are just magic. When we drove down the long private drive, through the overhanging trees, past the blooming flowers and beautiful ponds, we couldn't wipe the grins from our faces. Our family of five spent a wonderful, relaxing week here. We star gazed while sitting out on the dock, caught frogs, played outdoor games, kayaked, dipped our feet in the pond, saw a glorious sunset rainbow, read books, and reconnected and relaxed. The cabin is older, but it is full of all the creature comforts: clean, soft beds with fluffy pillows and duvet, plenty of very soft towels, a fully stocked kitchen, plenty of reading material for young and old, loads of board games, and two indoor sitting spaces to let folks spread out. All of the windows and doors were newer, so we had an easy time opening them and getting plenty of cool, fresh air when the weather was nice. And there was plenty of firewood for a cozy fire when it went cold at night. I also want to point out that access to the pond was amazingly easy and there were no steep steps, as sometimes you never know from the pictures. We loved this cabin. It was the first time I ever stayed on Mount Desert Island and understood what all of the hype is about.
We enjoyed our stay at the cottage on the pond, Barbra has thought of everything needed for an enjoyable stay. The cottage was very clean, the location has the opportunity to see Beaver, Otter, Deer and the Bald Eagle that makes their home on the pond. Acadia Park is a short drive away, lots of great hikes and views of the Ocean and Bar Harbor.

Thank you so much for taking time to write a wonderful review. We really appreciate that, and hope you will return soon to Hodgdon Pond Farm!
This is a lovely, comfortable 3 bedroom cottage with water views. We loved having the kayaks and canoe to explore around Hodgdon Pond and we appreciated the quietness of the area - we never saw more than one other boat on the water with us. Homeowner is wonderful - very responsive and a great communicator.

Peaceful Place
We loved the property ! It was so peaceful . We had everything we needed . My sister and nephew especially enjoyed the paddle-board.
We saw lots of wildlife.
The only improvement I would suggest would be a light over the dinning area .

Outstanding Maine Vacation
We booked pretty late, but Barbara was very accommodating and had the cottage ready for our family since it was early in the season. We were all very impressed with the property setting away from the road, next to the pond in a pine forest The cabin was immaculate, very well maintained with epic views of the pond. We saw beaver, loons, birds etc. We loved the kayaks and the dock. My 20 year old son loved the wood burning stove and made fires to keep us warm on the cool nights. The peacefulness was unbelievable. Very quaint. Would love to go back.

Thank you so much for this wonderful review! We hadn't intended to rent the week you reserved through Instant Booking, but I'd forgotten block it. Everything turned out very well , however, as we had just gotten the cottage ready for the people who reserved it eight months earlier for the following week. You and your family took terrific care of the cottage and we enjoyed meeting you and having you as neighbors while we worked on our other cottage. We're very glad you enjoyed your stay, and would love to have you back any time!

A little slice of MDI beauty
Our family has been visiting Mount Desert Island since the 1990s and this is by far the nicest place we have stayed. Hodgdon Pond is on the quiet side of the island and our cottage (cottage number 2) offered a very peaceful place to relax and enjoy our week. The cottage was perfect and the bedroom loft offered great views of the pond. The yard was even better! Hammocks, chairs and a dock to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet. Early morning kayaking on the pond was a treat as well to see the ducks and even a beaver. All of that plus what the island and Acadia National Park have to offer. We we definitely return for a future week (or more).

A hidden treasure on Mount Dessert Island
This was the third time that my wife and I stayed at Cottage #2 at Hodgdon Pond Farm, and we have already booked our stay for next summer as well. There are so many great things about this property that it is hard to know where to begin. First, it is located on the west side of the island, off the beaten path, so it is so much less congested than the Bar Harbor side of the island. At the same time, it is extremely easy to get to the hiking trails anywhere in Acadia National Park, which is the primary reason we go to Maine (We live in California). There is even one trail head, the Western trail, that is within a five-minute drive from the cottage. The property is only a 15-minute drive from Southwest Harbor where there are several restaurants that we really enjoy, including Red Sky and the Rogue Cafe. It is only a 20-minute drive to Northeast Harbor where you can catch the world-class Northeast Festival of Chamber music on five Tuesday evenings in July and August. We also enjoy the live community theater in Somesville, literally 10 minutes from the property.
The property itself is beautiful and well-maintained. My wife loves to go swimming every morning that we're there. The television and Wi-Fi are fine, but while you can surf the internet, the data plan isn't adequate for streaming, if that is important to you. Barbara, the owner, provides excellent customer service.
I would totally recommend Hodgdon Pond Farm Cottage #2 for a wonderful experience that allows you to enjoy everything that Acadia National Park has to offer in addition to access to a wonderful little pond and fun evening activities. Just don't book it the first week of August when we plan to be there!

Thank you SO much! We love having you stay at HPF, and are delighted you will be back next August. Thanks also for this great list of things to do! We're here now and enjoying just hanging out at the cottage and seeing a young otter cruising the ponds. Best to you both.

Beautiful, tranquil setting on the "quiet side"
We were planning our first trip to Maine, and Acadia National Park, and on a friend’s recommendation, we booked Cottage 2 on Hodgdon Pond Farm. We knew almost nothing about the area, except my husband’s vague recollection of loving a trip to Maine when he was 9. We knew we wanted something quiet, and the bonus of having a private dock, kayaks, a canoe, and a paddle board at our disposal made Hodgdon Pond an ideal location for us! We have 2 children, so the extra 3rd bedroom was a huge plus as well! Upon our arrival, the cottage was neat & tidy. The full kitchen with dishwasher made cooking so easy. With the location being quiet, there are not a lot of restaurant choices in the immediate area, so we chose to do most of our cooking at home. Picking up fresh, live lobsters from a local lobsterman was a great treat! The kitchen was well stocked with kitchen/cooking supplies. Pots, pans, trays, storage containers, plates, bowls, mugs, cutlery, lobster pot, ect… We also utilized the charcoal grill out back. We spent mornings and evenings on the pond, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, and the kids favorite, paddle boarding! One of my young son’s favorite pass times is fishing, so we would regularly find him fishing off the private dock. We spent our days exploring the many beautiful trails and activities available in Acadia National Park. We ventured into Bar Harbor a few times as well which made the return to the “quiet side” even more blissful. The weather in mid July was absolutely stunning! This mid atlantic girl didn’t even miss the air conditioning! If you are considering a trip to Mt. Desert Island, we would highly recommend a stay at Hodgdon Pond!

Heaven on Earth!
Beautiful, relaxing place to enjoy a vacation in Maine. This was our 13th trip to MDI and the best place that we've stayed! We will definitely be back. Very private, beautiful lake, peaceful kayaking, very clean, well-equipped home. The owner called when we arrived to check in with us and was available if we needed her. Beautiful views from the windows in the cottage. I would highly recommend staying here, away from the traffic in Bar Harbor but close enough to get to for dinner & shopping. Loved it!

About the host
Hosted by Barbara Lawrence
I first went to Mt. Desert Island in 1948 as a summer kid, then lived there year-round from 1979 - to 1995. In 1993 I returned to school, then taught at Northeastern and Lesley Universities, and also worked for the Rural School and Community Trust and KnowledgeWorks Foundation as a policy analyst. I am most at home in rural places and delighted to be living back in Maine again, this time in Camden. I've written 8 books, most of them about education, but more recently wrote my first novel "Islands of Time" set on Mt. Desert and nearby Little Cranberry Island, and the sequel, which will be available soon, "Ben's Story."
Why they chose this property
Hodgdon Pond Farm seemed like home from the moment I read about it in Downeast magazine in 1981. Land facing Acadia National Park on a one-mile lake that you can't see from the main road - what could be better? I love that we share this place with many animals and birds for whom it really is home. I enjoy exploring the many attractions of the Mt. Desert and Downeast Maine, and that at the end of the day when we sit on the dock or swing in the hammock, we feel we've never left the Park.
What makes this property unique
Private, quiet, lots of boats, well maintained, fully furnished, family friendly, but most of all the location right on the water.
