About this property

Josephine's Apartment

Summary:
Located half a block off King Street and BRAND NEW TO THE RENTAL MARKET, built in 1882, Josephine's Apartment has retained all her charm, and with an address in the heart of the city, it is walking distance to the best shopping in Charleston. Josespine's is a hidden gem nestled on Society St with double front porches and a giant magical tree in the front courtyard! A white picket fence marks the address, adding ambiance and privacy to the double porches.

The Space:
Upon entering the house, you'll be delighted by the unique front door and know you have arrived somewhere special.

In the first room to the left, you will enjoy the library with a diverse collection of books, a large dining table, and a bar for afternoon cocktails. Open the pocket doors and you will be in the parlor with one of seven fireplaces that are original to the house. Parlors are quintessential to Charleston homes for entertaining or afternoon tea.

Down the hall, you will find a powder room, followed by a quaint kitchen, equipped with a dainty retro fridge, induction cooktop, kettle, toaster oven, and a 1940s era French sink, newly up fitted with a Butcher block countertop, stainless steel sink and dishwasher, microwave, lots of vintage dishes, and a Coffee pot. Enjoy your meals at the White lacquer tulip table for two while the sunlight filters in through the shaded garden walkway.

Across the hall is room No. 6 with a king bed and a place to hang your clothes in the rosy glow of the modern lamps. Positioned in the center of the house, this room is quiet and relaxing. To freshen up, you will have your choice of a full bath appointed with a vintage claw foot tub across the hall, or to the right, there is a second full bathroom with a vast new 5‘ x 3‘walk-in shower with bench and rain head.

At the end of the hall sits Bedroom No. 8, which we refer to as Josephine’s Room. It has an eloquently decorated king-size bed, a chandelier, mid-century Wall Sconces, and a fireplace. You will have access to a small covered porch that leads to the enchanting and secluded garden. If visiting in the winter, don't forget to pick some oranges from our tree shading the garden for your morning juice or cocktail.

Josephine's apartment has been thoughtfully furnished with eclectic vintage pieces, funky artwork, and a collection of plants in neat pots throughout this home, adding to this perfect Charleston getaway.

Guest Access:
kitchen, porches, private courtyard, orange tree

The Neighborhood:
King Street is a block away and is filled with national stores, such as Anthropologie and Madewell. Charleston also has a lot of lovely local stores, including Indigo and Cotton, Havens, RTW, J.Stark, Taxidermy, Dumas, and CandleFish.

The Second Sunday of every month, King Street closes down to cars, and there are lots of vendors and food carts set up to wander through. Tables are set up in the street, and it's very dog-friendly. You are also a few blocks from the Farmer's Market, which happens every Saturday until 2.

Getting Around:
The neighborhood is very walkable, lots to see just outside the front door. Charleston has a lot to offer and you can travel by car, uber, bus or bicycle.

Other Things to Note:
This apartment is one of two in the house built in 1882 .. it’s a two story brick house, with four large rooms upstairs and downstairs- with a double side porches closed in on the left side of the house, that accommodates the kitchen full bath and powder room/toilet and sink..in Josephine’s apartment-also the home has two double porches on the front and the front door is to the right side, which takes you into a long hallway the first door to the left is the door into Josephines apartment.
At the end of this hallway are two French doors, which are the entrance to the upstairs apartment.

This is a shared front door and hallway.
The house is on two meters and makes for perfect, completely separate apartments. All rooms are large with lots of huge windows,
12-foot high ceilings, beautiful original wood floors, and transom windows over the ten-foot doors. The home has been left intact, and with thought, integrity, she has lived happily over 100 years!
GingerLily is truly a special place; a lot of care and love have gone into making it a home away from home for all who come and stay.
I’m happy to host y’all in Charleston!

Its was just the right place. Quiet enough but in the heart of it all. You could walk to just about everywhere Really needed to unwind. Beds were comfortable, shower was amazing. Ginger made going to the beach so easy. She had chairs, beach towels and a really large tote to carry every thing.

Perfect Historic Charleston location!

Staying in this cute, perfectly located historic home was the highlight of our vacation. Ginger made sure check in went smooth by providing very detailed instructions for check in and parking. The house was clean and adorable. We had 4 adults and there was plenty of space. We would definitely stay here again.

Wonderful Relaxing Oasis in Perfect Location

We loved our stay for a mother-daughter weekend. The location being one block from a fantastic French patisserie & chocolate shop was an added bonus to an already amazing stay. The location is fantastic. The decor of the house is very fun and very clean! The kitchen was perfect for two but might be cramped for more. We loved getting to eat on the covered front porch while people watching and reading in the back garden was a great way to relax after a busy morning. Would definitely come back. It would be perfect for a girls weekend for a larger group if you also rent the upper apartment.

Delightful home in a great location

This property is A+. Every detail has been thought of that you can need even down to umbrellas and robes. The location is perfect for walking to all the Charleston attractions, park your car and forget it. The house is spotlessly clean and well kept. You will love this sweet place if you stay. Ginger the house contact is awesome too!

Beyond charming

Two lifelong couples stayed for three nights. The location alone makes this so desirable, a block off from King street! We walked easily all over town. When you had to drive, the adjacent parking structure was awesome. The girls thought the place was decorated “super cute”, the guys agreed it was very historical! Bedrooms and bathrooms were convenient and nice. The kitchenette was small, but adequate. We had a great time and would definitely stay again! Thank you Ginger!

Charming property with a Great location!!!

We were in Charleston for a conference and stayed at this property. The house was immaculate and the beds were very comfortable. The owner was extremely responsive when we had a couple of minor questions (could not find the dining room light switch!). The property had a great back yard - which we did not use but really enjoyed relaxing on the front porch. The property was absolutely charming and had great access to everything. We did not have or need a car. Highly recommend doing the carriage ride as a tour to get your bearing and MUSE is a fabulous restaurant two doors down. Would definitely rent here again

Ideal location

Ideal location for walking to many of Charleston’s attractions…King’s street with it’s shopping and dining is just a block over and other attractions such as the horse carriage rides, Charleston market and harbor cruises are all within comfortable walking distance. The reason I gave four stars for accuracy of property listing is because we did not realize the separate upstairs is another rental. I may have just missed this detail in the listing but either way it would not deter us from renting again. The bedrooms have white noise machines for use, and I would suggest possibly taking earplugs if you are a light sleeper. Overall, the neighborhood as a whole is quiet and safe for walking at night. The home is so inviting…charming old world eclectic chic! We loved it! It has a front porch and lovely backyard sitting areas. In the mornings, we would have our coffee and pastries from the French bakery next door out there. So relaxing…a step back in time.

We were in town for a wedding and looking for a location in close proximity to all the tourist attractions with walk ability. This property had a great location, but unfortunately there were some issues with our stay.Upon arrival, we did not have access to the parking pass which was supposed to be on the entryway table per the check in instructions. We needed to contact the property manager, and waited about an hour for someone to deliver the pass to us. In addition, the entire home was without hot water for the duration of our stay. As you can imagine, having numerous guests needing to use the shower for a wedding weekend, this was unacceptable. We were denied compensation for the hot water inconvenience despite asking multiple times. Eventually they stopped responding to my inquiry.

Overall, the apartment was charming and captured the downtown Charleston vibe we were hoping for. The location and interior were both excellent. Unfortunately, there were two areas that impacted our stay. The upstairs neighbors returned around 2–3 a.m. each night and were extremely loud, to the point where we could hear full conversations. This was unexpected and made it difficult to rest.Additionally, communication with the host was challenging. Despite reaching out multiple times regarding an early check-in due to our long travel from Michigan, responses often took up to two weeks. I ultimately found the host’s phone number and only received check-in instructions about 30 minutes before arrival, which caused unnecessary stress. If not for the noise and communication difficulties, I would have rated this stay higher, as the apartment itself and the location were wonderful.
