Our house and VRBO unit were not damaged by Hurricane Helene which hit the Asheville area on September 27, 2024. Although we closed the unit for several weeks due to loss of power and water, we have now reopened the unit as of Saturday night, Nov. 30, 2027. All utilities are back on and up and running, including drinkable water, and tv and internet service.
Downtown Asheville, with its many restaurants, shops, and other attractions was only minimally impacted by Hurricane Helene and is up and running and welcoming guests. Areas surrounding Asheville are slowly recovering and all major city roads and highways are open. We hope you will consider visiting Asheville soon - your visits and presence here will greatly help in our recovery efforts.
With regard to booking our unit, we do not accept one night rentals. We request that guests coming on a weekend book the unit for both Friday and Saturday nights (2 nights)(or Saturday and Sunday nights). Weekends are the most popular time for people visiting the Asheville area and single night bookings limit the number of weekend bookings - therefore, we request a minimum two night booking.
This rental is very near downtown Asheville, only 2.5 miles from the Biltmore Estate entrance & close to several Blue Ridge Parkway entrances. Enjoy being able to walk downtown while at the same time being tucked away on a dead end street at the base of Beaucatcher Mountain. The rental can sleep four people and is approximately 1,200 square feet. It has one master bedroom, a large bonus room that serves as a work area, and a living/den area with an open full kitchen layout.
As you enter the driveway, the guest entrance is directly next to parking and is easily accessible with no steps. You will enter into the den/living area that has a large comfortable couch, a two seater dining room table, a 55 inch wall-mounted TV, and a kitchen bar with two bar stools. The open kitchen arrangement allows for easy communication with others seated in the living/den area and TV viewing when cooking. There are two windows with blinds in this area which allow for natural light to enter and privacy when the blinds are closed.
The kitchen is large with plenty of cabinet storage and countertop space for prepping food. There is a flat top stove/oven combo as well as a full size refrigerator. All the essential cooking items, such as pots, pans, silverware and utensils are provided. There is also a microwave, toaster, blender, a drip coffee maker, and a French press with coffee grinder.
The hall from the kitchen takes you back to the full size bathroom, master bedroom and bonus room that serves as a workspace or extra sleeping area. The master bedroom has a queen size bed with comfortable mattress, a chest of drawers, a dresser, a second smart TV, two nightstands and a bench. There is also one window (with a blind) in the bedroom which allows for natural light and privacy, and a closet for hanging plenty of clothes.
The bonus room/office has a large size desk serving as a dedicated work space. In this room there is also large sofa, two night stands with lamps, a large chair and another closet for hanging more clothes or storage.
The entire rental unit has a beautiful sanded and stained cement floor. There is central air and heat.
The large front and back yard are grass, and you likely will see several goats roaming the hillside inside a low voltage electric fenced area behind the rental unit.
Guests have the entire private rental that is described and will not have to share space with others. There is a private entrance right next to the guest parking in the private driveway. This unit is an apartment, guest suite style space that is in the lower level of our house where we live.
The City of Asheville does not allow full house rentals within city limits. Therefore, this rental is a guest suite that is in the same house as the owners who live upstairs.
I love the neighborhood because of the following reasons:
1. The rental is central to everything. The proximity to downtown while still being in a residential neighborhood cannot be beat. All parts of downtown are very accessible from this rental by foot or bike.
2. The rental is only 2.5 miles from the entrance to Biltmore Estate and only 3.5 miles to an entrance for the Blue Ridge Parkway via Town Mountain Road via Martin Luther King Drive. There are several other entrances to the Blue Ridge Parkway within 3-5 miles.
3. The rental unit is also very near many popular stores and restaurants as well as the Asheville Mall, on the other side of Beaucatcher Mountain, which is easily accessible through Tunnel Road (all within 1.5 miles or less).
4. The views in the neighborhood and nearby roof top bars are incredible and there are plenty of places to hike in the neighborhood. There are no mountain views from the rental. However, if you decide to hike in the neighborhood, you will be amazed at some of the views from Beaucatcher Mountain.
5. There are several sports and entertainment areas near the retail unit, including: several play grounds, two stadiums which host a semi pro soccer team and a single A baseball team, a softball field with one disc golf basket, two golf courses, and public tennis courts.
6. Wildlife is thriving for being in a city - I have seen turkey, bear, fox, coyote, and a plethora of birds in this neighborhood. Plus our neighbor has several goats that roam the hillside behind the rental unit (behind an electric fence). They are always fun to watch and feed. You will likely see them from the rental.

This is a wonderful place to stay. The hosts are always available and make everything comfortable for your stay. The wife had a home away from home while I worked. While you are visiting Asheville whether for work or for pleasure truly consider this apartment.
Very comfortable inside and parking right at our door is superb It was easy to walk into town. Our dogs were also comfortable and well behaved. We brought extra blankets to make sure our dogs did not harm furniture. The entire unit was very clean and well stocked. The beds and shower are wonderful..
Host was welcoming, attentive, and flexible. Even though it was a downstairs apartment we felt like we were in our own world. The amenities offered were great. The goats were a fun surprise. I would return in a heart beat.
Host was communicative, property was very clean, location was in a quiet neighborhood and an easy walk to downtown. Will definitely consider property again when in the Asheville area.
The Hideaway in Asheville was clean, comfortable, cozy & convenient to the downtown area. Well stocked kitchen, bath amenities and a very comfortable bed! Easy check in and checkout! We will most certainly stay here again!
We had a great time! Excellent place to stay. Walkable to downtown. Very comfortable and easy with small dogs. It made for a highly enjoyable anniversary trip!
The check-in process was incredibly simple once explained by the host. The kitchen had several items that we had forgotten or didn't even think about, so that was a plus. The beds were incredibly soft and welcoming. They were even easy to strip, which was a part of the simple check-out process.
This place was super clean and very cozy! My husband and I spent time here for our Ashville visit, and the communication with John was easy and detailed. They left a sweet message of welcome for us in the kitchen, and they had many details such as a fan and space heater in the bedroom in case they are needed. Would definitely recommend for a nice quiet stay!
Property was perfect for our needs and exactly as described. Owner did an excellent job communicating with us prior to the trip so we knew exactly what to do. Very clean and spacious. Within walking distance to downtown.
Enjoyed our stay everything was excellent, clean, quite, just as advertised.

We enjoyed having Robert and his wife as our guests and they were excellent guests. They left our unit in great condition as if they had not even been there - seemed like the unit hardly needed cleaning it was left so clean. We greatly appreciate our guest being so respectful of our unit. I would highly recommend them to other hosts.
My Aunt and I loved staying here. The apartment was so comfortable and I wanted to bring the sofa home with me. It WAS so comfortable. The home was close to everything we wanted to visit during our stay. I would definitely stay here again.
Our Host, John, was very responsive prior to our arrival and once we were on site. Check-in was simple & smooth. Our accomodations were Excellent. Very Clean (even my wife was impressed) And Very comfortable. Bath towels were Luxurious as was the Bed and many layers of blankets as it was a bit chilly during our stay. John was Great and our stay was really First Rate. I will stay here again & again when in Asheville. Thank You John for such a positive experience.

About the host
Hosted by John Pickens
I am a retired attorney who moved to Asheville with my wife Donna recently. We are both in our late 70s and enjoy traveling, being with our family and doing lots of art. We are open minded individuals who love to interact with all types of people.
Why they chose this property
Extremely close to downtown Asheville yet secluded on a dead end street. Rental is also a central location because it is less than 3 miles to the entrance of the Biltmore Estate, very close to one entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway, and all the chain restaurants, Asheville Mall and other big box stores located on Tunnel Road. And we have goats that live behind our property that are fun to watch.
What makes this property unique
Central location to EVERYTHING and a chance to see all sorts of wildlife while still being walking distance to downtown Asheville
