About this property

Lovely Home-180 Views on Lake Superior-3 miles to Ski Hill-on Bike Path-no kids

* NO CHILDREN UNDER 13 years old due to 40 foot cliff proximity*!

This home is a rare find! From the moment you enter, your senses are overwhelmed by the natural beauty all around you. This retreat is situated on a 40 foot cliff overlooking Lake Superior right on the Gitchi-Gami bike trail. For this reason we rent to adults and over 13 years children only. Local folks call it 'the glass house' due to the large windows offering180 degree views of Lake Superior.

Only 3 miles to the Ski Hill. Close enough to the Lutsen Ski Resort to enjoy all the amenities yet far enough to be away from all the crowds for some quiet time. The exterior walls are 65% windows with views of the lake and woods. A 10 by 15 foot skylight washes the main room with light. The total effect is that you are inside but feel at one with nature.

In the Great Room is a full kitchen, two dining areas, a gas fireplace, and a wonderful couch area under the skylight. The windows, with an amazing view of the water, are framed with window seating. Under the window seats are many books sure to interest every reader, plus many dvds & games for the whole family to play. The bedrooms, which are separated by the Great Room, have queen beds and private full bathrooms. The master bath has a whirlpool, over-sized, deep-soaking bathtub that overlooks the lake. The Great Room can accommodate 2 guests on a gel foam mattress sofa bed.

We have recently added portable air conditioning in the great room for the rare moments the North Shore is affected by global warming.

Beautiful location on a cliff above Lake Superior, with views in all directions. Well stocked with all amenities, easy access, and close to hiking trails and beautiful fall colors. This home is truly one-of-a-king, and the owner was very responsive.

north shore explore

Easy to find, with a location far enough north to enable us to explore up and down the Hwy 61 corridor without long drive times. We arrived in the peak of the fall colors with the rental providing a most comfortable base to explore the North Shore. The view from almost everywhere in the house is pure lake with sunrises that you should be sure to witness. We found the home to be as described in the listing and just about perfect for the 4 of us.

Everything and More

This property was exactly as advertised, but can only be fully appreciated in person- what a view! This was perfect for myself and a few friends for a North Shore weekend. Great location close to the Lutsen Mountains, very private, and check in and out was a seamless process. Kittie was very professional, kind, and communicative about the property and reservation. Thank you for letting us enjoy your beautiful home.

Gorgeous place!!!

This is the most beautiful VRBO I have stayed in. Breathtaking views of Lake Superior. Woodsy setting. Seating so you can have a view from everywhere. Got to view a ship traveling across Superior. Saw grouse in the yard. Enjoyed a campfire nightly. Comfy beds. We'll stocked kitchen. I would highly recommend this place.

Fantastic views and quiet location.

My wife, our 16 YO son and I went north for spring break! We did some skiing at Lutsen and snowmobiling on the north shore trails. Super close to the ski hills. The driveway was big enough for our 2 place trailer and one truck, might be a little tight for additional combinations but plenty of room for another car. The trail was right across 61 and it was really easy to get to the entire trail system. My wife loves to cook and had everything she needed to prepare homemade meals during our visit. The complete separation of the bedrooms on either side of the living space is great for couples traveling together. The views of the lake were spectacular and worth the trip!

Horizon House Lutsen Fall Hiking

LOVED this property. The views are stunning and the location is ideal. We were near to all the great hiking trails and Grand Marais yet we felt secluded, deep in the woods. I loved the layout of house, keeping both bedrooms and baths separate. The fire pit was easily accessible through the side entrance. We had a fire every night. The stars were magnificent, something we rarely see living in Minneapolis. Everything was marked very clearly. The only issue we had was figuring out the oven. We found the appliance book, but it took us a bit to figure out the symbols. The weather was cool, but when it was sunny, the property warmed up nicely via the skylight. The last morning, we turned on the heat for a short while and it was pleasant. I'd definitely come back. Would love to bring the grand-children in a few years. It's not ideal for small children. That said, we were gone from 9-6 hiking everyday. I hope we can return next year!

Major disappointment

After considering this place for 6 years, my family and I decided to splurge for 4 nights over Thanksgiving. While the location is beautiful and the layout of the home is ideal, it is not comfortable, and it definitely is not worth the holiday upcharge. The worst aspect of the home is the heating system. Our bedroom was probably 55 degrees on the first day--until sometime after midnight when the heat kicked in and turned our room into a 75-degree sauna. This was a nightly occurrence. I'm all for being "green" and economical (that's how I live), but it makes no sense to force guests to freeze during the day and sweat in the middle of the night; the time-of-use plan they're using does not work. Parts of the home were filthy. We could write our name in the dust in our bedroom, there was crud and thick cobwebs in every corner and dead bugs everywhere, and we found fecal matter in one of the toilets when we arrived. The only TV was in the freezing cold bedroom, so if we wanted to watch a movie as a family we had to squish on the queen-sized bed and sit under a pile of blankets. The instructions for the satellite, DVD player, TV, etc., were outdated. Some of the instructions contradicted each other, and others referred to equipment that was not present. The satellite remote was not working consistently due to weak batteries, but there were no extra batteries to be found. If the electricity went out, there was no flashlight either. The home advertises a large jetted tub, but instructions indicate there will be no additional hot water if you use it. The first night we had one cold shower and a partially filled tub. Although the view is gorgeous and the architecture is pleasant, this home is no longer contemporary, and it's not a "retreat" when one is physically uncomfortable due to a poor heating system (and cold air blowing in through the windows).

Magical

I have been visiting the North Shore for many years, sometimes with friends, many times solo. I try to stay different places (everywhere from Two Harbors to Grand Marais) to get the full experience. My first (non-ski season) trip was with some girlfriends. One of them said on the way up that she thought the North Shore was 'magical'. I scoffed quietly to myself because I thought she was being over-dramatic. After so many trips, though, I have to admit that she is right. And this place ... THIS PLACE .. really catches the essence of what it means to be on the North Shore. Quiet, secluded, yet easy access to the bike path, Grand Marais, and multiple hiking trails. The view from the great room is beyond amazing. The pictures do not do it justice. And, to have such views from every room in the house (except the toilet room) just adds to the effect. You can truly see and take in the beauty and power that is Lake Superior. Having an unfettered view of the sunrise and sunset is beyond amazing. Also, I found watching the clouds and storms travel across the lake almost mesmerizing. Seeing the stars from the cozy bed and watching the wildlife (I had a flock of 5 snow bunting flitter past the window one day, an eagle flew past on its way NE along the lake as I was packing to leave, and 2 downy woodpeckers were checking out the one lone birch right outside the window) kept me quite entertained. With the house snuggled in between the trees along the cliff's edge, you feel as if it is just you and nature. I found myself playing classical music and just sitting in a chair by the window with a glass of craft beer watching the sun go down every night I was there. I didn't really cook while I was there because I was checking out the restaurants (I can't turn down the fresh fish when I am up there), but I have never seen a rental unit kitchen so well-stocked! Crock pot, rice steamer, multiple bowls and baking pans and other items. I think it might be better stocked than my kitchen at home. I am not one to take a bath, so I didn't take advantage of the jetted tub. However, I did use of the steam shower and found it to be the perfect way to end the day. Other reviews have remarked on the number of instructions provided. This is true, but, this house is no 'plain jane'. It has some very unique features, so I found the instructions useful, understandable and overall, very interesting. I cannot wait to go back!

Check-in was a breeze, and the location of the home was great. We usually stay at Lutsen Sea Villas but decided to try a different location this year. Although the home was beautiful, the heating system was problematic. The fireplace didn’t work, and while the caretaker initially seemed motivated to help, communication eventually stopped altogether. That issue didn’t bother us much since we weren’t in the house often. We arrived Friday evening, were out of the house by 9–10 a.m. Saturday, didn’t return until 4–5 p.m., and checked out by 10 a.m. Sunday. After our stay, I received a message from the owner asking if I “wanted to tell her about the hole in the wicker on the back of the couch.” We had no idea what she was referring to and barely used the living space. There were only four of us—all responsible adults in our 30s—and we treated the home with care. While I understand damages can happen, the way it was addressed felt unnecessarily accusatory and condescending. A simple, respectful inquiry would have been appreciated. Unfortunately, this experience left a bad impression, and we’ll likely return to Lutsen Sea Villas in the future.

About the host

Hosted by Kittie Frantz

Host profile image
This property was built by Mary Ruth Barton in 1989 and held by the Barton family partnership until 2015 when Mary Ruth's daughter, Kittie, through her Kittie Frantz Trust, purchased it from her siblings in a private sale. She knows you'll love to spend time there as much as she and her family does.

Why they chose this property

If you're looking for a serene atmosphere to relax that is not a cabin, this property will fill your senses with beauty. This is a modern one story home that is not a condo so you are fairly secluded by the trees around it and Lake Superior in front of it.
