About this property

Lake Superior Home with Private Beach, Amazing Views

Inspired by the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright , Grey Havens sits on 450 feet of private Lake Superior shoreline.

The house is furnished in mission style for a luxurious yet comfortable feel. Art scattered throughout the home, much of it by local artists, reflects the wilderness surrounding you. The open floor plan allows for cooking, dining and relaxing all with amazing Lake Superior views.

The main living area has a Carlton Peak rock fireplace and a 50' flat screen TV with BluRay, dvd and vcr players for evening movies. The stereo system can fill the main area with whatever type of music you prefer from the cd collection or play your own personalized music. The home also has internet, so you can connect and even download movies, if you have that service from the smart DVD. Two comfortable swivel recliners in the bay window let you nap while being lulled by the waves crashing on the shore.

Up a spiral stairs and overlooking the living area is a loft full of books, a daybed with trundle and a couch. Up another spiral stairs and you arrive in the newly-remodeled turret with spectacular 180 degree views of the lake. Comfortable seating and lighting make this a perfect place to relax, read or watch the many changing faces of Lake Superior. At night it's a star watchers dream!

Or maybe you prefer to wander down to the lake to skip stones on your own private beach or fish off the ledgerock shore. Hot dogs and s'mores at the waterfront fire pit creates fun and memories for all ages.

You can create your own gourmet meals in the fully equipped kitchen using the JennAire stove and other amenities. Or grill outside on the Weber!

The master bedroom is a special retreat with two walls of windows for stunning lake views. The attached bathroom has its own soaking tub and separate shower.

The first guest bedroom reflects the voyageur heritage of the North Shore. It's attached bathroom has whimsical wall art of spruce trees, bringing the surrounding forest inside.

The second guest bedroom focuses on the art of Bev Doolittle with her portrayals of the hidden denizens of the birch forests. In the attached bathroom look out the window to find the trees which posed for the birch wall paintings!

Grey Havens is only minutes from Lutsen Ski Resort, with downhill skiing, snowboarding, and in summer, the Alpine Slide. Even closer is the 27 hole Lutsen National Golf Course. Miles of cross country ski trails start just across the road. Hiking in the beautiful state parks along Highway 61 is spectacular whatever the season. Just 20 minutes to the East is Grand Marais, an artist colony and charming town full of shops and restaurants to keep you entertained whatever the weather.

Grey Havens was a harbor for the highest and most powerful of the Elves in Tolkien's story of the Middle Kingdom. It was from Grey Havens that the Elves set sail for other enchanted lands. A place of magic and beauty, Grey Havens was a refuge for the Fellowship of the Ring and is our refuge for the soul.

Fall Family Trip
Gray Havens was the perfect cabin for our family Fall get-away. The views from every window bringing in the sunlight and the lake. The coziness of every room. The amazing property, the fire pit, the stairs down to the lake. The “treehouse room” (as the grandchildren called it) was the best place to be during morning sunrise. We will be back next year.

Outstanding North Shore accommodations!
Three “senior” siblings and spouses thoroughly enjoyed this home for 5 nights after Labor Day! We all were able to enjoy the exquisite view from the turret loft as well as a couple of evenings of a cozy fire in the living room fireplace. It was very easy lake access and we were very happy to have garage space for the cars! The kitchen had everything we needed and the beds were comfortable for all. Sweet family memories were made!

Relaxing family getaway
It’s a fantastic location if you want to hike, golf, and enjoying the Lutsen area. The house was great for the seven of us (6 adults and a 1 year old). We loved having a fire in the evenings, and the kitchen had everything we needed. We could get down to the water, but most of the water view was obstructed by trees (which we knew). There was a beautiful 3rd floor view of the water, but you had to make it up 2 levels on a narrow spiral staircase. Beautiful once you got up there!

Wonderful Location
Being right on Lake Superior was wonderful. The sound of the waves lulled us to sleep each night and the third floor provided an awesome view and place to reflect each morning. The house is nicely appointed and well kept. Our rating would have been five stars across the board but our check in was a little rocky. We couldn't get into the house because the door handle was locked and required a physical key. The contact phone number listed was not the property manager's number so it took over an hour to reach the property manager. Once contacted, the property manager was helpful with getting us into the house.

We are city dwellers who have always loved the outdoors. When our children were young, we went camping and traveled all over the country. Once they were grown and we had four granddaughters, we decided a place where we could all be together and celebrate family events was important. We now split our time between Minneapolis and Lutsen, so we get to enjoy the best of both worlds.

Why they chose this property

We fell in love with the North Shore the very first time we visited. After years of renting other people’s homes, we decided we wanted our own piece of paradise. We purchased 1.5 acres right on Lake Superior in Lutsen and built our home. This year we added the adjacent 1.3 acre lot, so seclusion is assured!

We love the many faces of the Lake, from smooth as glass to the powerful winter storms. The surrounding forest is full of wonderful birch and spruce trees not to mention the abundant wildlife -- deer, chipmunks, eagles, owls, and the occasional bear or wolf.

What makes this property unique

We are avid hikers and have been all over the wonderful state parks that line Highway 61. Trips into Canada to Fort William and Thunder Bay or up into the Boundary Waters at Ely always are adventures of discovery.

As well as hiking, we love to eat! When not making gourmet meals in our own kitchen, we have found numerous, sometimes hidden, restaurants serving everything from venison to burgers to four star cuisine.

As amateur astronomers, we built our house with a turret. There is nothing more awe inspiring than looking at the Milky Way or finding the North Star or identifying constellations on a warm summer night. Or bundling up and watching the shimmering Northern Lights on a fall or winter evening.

There simply is no better place to relax and enjoy Nature in all her glory than our retreat on the North Shore.
