About this property
Lake Superior Home with semi Private Beach, Amazing Views
Inspired by the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright , Grey Havens sits on 450 feet of private Lake Superior shoreline.
Completed in 1993, the house is furnished in mission style for a luxurious yet comfortable feel. Art scattered throughout the home, much of it by local artists, reflects the wilderness surrounding you. The open floor plan allows for cooking, dining and relaxing all with amazing Lake Superior views.
The main living area has a Carlton Peak rock fireplace and a 50' flat screen TV with BluRay, dvd player for evening movies. The stereo system can fill the main area with whatever type of music you prefer from the cd collection or play your own personalized music. The home also has internet, so you can connect and even download movies, if you have that service from the smart DVD. Two comfortable swivel recliners in the bay window let you nap while being lulled by the waves crashing on the shore.
Up a spiral stairs and overlooking the living area is a loft full of books, a daybed with trundle and a couch. Up another spiral stairs and you arrive in the newly-remodeled turret with spectacular 180 degree views of the lake. Comfortable seating and lighting make this a perfect place to relax, read or watch the many changing faces of Lake Superior. At night it's a star watchers dream!
Or maybe you prefer to wander down 2 flights of stairs to the lake to skip stones on your own semi private beach (we’ve to,d out neighbors they may use but to mindful of out renters) or fish off the ledgerock shore. Hot dogs and s'mores at the waterfront fire pit creates fun and memories for all ages.
You can create your own gourmet meals in the fully equipped kitchen using the JennAire stove and other amenities. Or grill outside on the Weber!
The master bedroom is a special retreat with two walls of windows for stunning lake views. The attached bathroom has its own soaking tub and separate shower.
The first guest bedroom reflects the voyageur heritage of the North Shore. It's attached bathroom has whimsical wall art of spruce trees, bringing the surrounding forest inside.
The second guest bedroom focuses on the art of Bev Doolittle with her portrayals of the hidden denizens of the birch forests. In the attached bathroom look out the window to find the trees which posed for the birch wall paintings!
Grey Havens is only minutes from Lutsen Ski Resort, with downhill skiing, snowboarding, and in summer, the Alpine Slide. Even closer is the 27 hole Lutsen National Golf Course. Miles of cross country ski trails start just across the road. Hiking in the beautiful state parks along Highway 61 is spectacular whatever the season. Just 20 minutes to the East is Grand Marais, an artist colony and charming town full of shops and restaurants to keep you entertained whatever the weather.
Grey Havens was a harbor for the highest and most powerful of the Elves in Tolkien's story of the Middle Kingdom. It was from Grey Havens that the Elves set sail for other enchanted lands. A place of magic and beauty, Grey Havens was a refuge for the Fellowship of the Ring and is our refuge for the soul.

I’m so glad that you enjoyed our home. I would be happy to have you stay again.
We stayed at this property after it was recommended to us by friends, and it did NOT disappoint. Games, movies, amenities, room/space for relaxation, stocked kitchen-- this place has everything you need for a relaxing and restorative stay. We had a few messages back-and-forth with the owner/management, and they were incredibly responsive and helpful. Thanks for hosting our family!

Glad it met your expectations. As my get-a-way home, I want my renters to enjoy what I’d want in a rental. I hope you’ll stay again. I would be happy to have you
Property was spacious, clean, great amenities and views, also had great areas for kids to explore, (loft areas)”. Lake shore was fantastic, however it should be noted that it’s a little bit of a hike downhill, which was hard for our older friends. My wife and I most definitely would recommend and plan on going again.

I'm very happy that you enjoyed my home. I will definitely mention the stairs down to the lake. I thought it was a little more explained through the pictures - I'll have to take a look (my parents set this up years ago). Hope you'll return!
An absolute gem, from the beginning of our stay until the end. Very clean, fun winding staircase up to the 3rd floor cupola where we had great family discussions. Had a camp fire, swam off of the private beach, skipped rocks, played games, hiked, and enjoyed visiting Grand Marais.

We had a great time at this location. Very close to a variety of activities in Lutsen and Grand Maria’s. Great place to come back to at night and relax to the view and sounds of Lake Superior.

Glad you enjoyed it. Hopefully you'll be back for a return visit.
Lovely tree house feel, loved all the windows, ceiling fans helped a lot, always enjoy hearing the sound of Lake Superior waves all night. Feels like the ocean.
The home was beautiful, great views of the lake, had plenty of space and was well-furnished. We stayed for the weekend to ski Lutsen and it was very close to the mountain and not far from Grand Marais. We will plan to stay again!
The home is beautiful! It is well kept, clean and the property is amazing. The owners were wonderful to work with and I will definitely consider staying in the future. I perfect North Shore location.
The views from the house are amazing. The cabin feels cozy. The owners have exquisite taste and every bit of the house is beautiful. The check in process was easy. It’s in the woods, and yet only minutes away from stores.

This was our second time staying at Grey Havens and it was just as wonderful this time around! We love the location for getting out and exploring the North Shore. Beautiful cabin and plenty of room for 2 families with kids. The crow's nest was a hit in the morning with the kids and adults alike!

March can be either very cold and snowy or, as this year, warmer and great for hiking. Glad you had a good time!

Overall it was a wonderful stay! The location was perfect and the cabin was beautiful. Had trouble getting in initially with the code we were given but was able to get in touch with the maintenance person immediately who gave us a code to get in. We would definitely stay here again!

We've worked out a few glitches with the coded door lock, and everything is working smoothly again! Great to hear you had a wonderful vacation at Grey Havens.
This is the 2nd year my family has enjoyed this wonderful cabin. Before we even started our weekend the grandchildren were asking if we could do it again next year. The cabin is perfect for families, incredibly private, great views and as cozy as it could be. And…it looks like we will be booking again for next year.

Debbie,
I’m so glad you are still enjoying our place. I’d be happy to help book for next year when you are ready.

The home is beautifully situated and beautifully furnished. We loved the artworks and the shelves of books, and the views are amazing! The kitchen was well equipped for cooking. We enjoyed the beach every day. We did not make much use of the firepit as it is a ways from the house on a somewhat steep path that is tricky to navigate in the dark. I would also mention that this house may be more appropriate for short term stays as there is no access to laundry and there are certain restrictions on water usage. But for a long weekend on the North Shore it is a beautiful spot!

About the host
Hosted by Lara Martinson
We live in the cities. We both enjoy the outdoors.
Why they chose this property
Lara's parents built this home (her dad designed it) and we've all enjoyed coming up over the years. Completed in 1993, we've continued with its original style.
We both came to the North Shore during our childhoods and continued the tradition with our daughter.
We love the many faces of the Lake, from smooth as glass to the powerful winter storms. The surrounding forest is full of wonderful birch and spruce trees not to mention the abundant wildlife -- deer, chipmunks, eagles, owls, and the occasional bear or wolf.
What makes this property unique
We are avid hikers and have been all over the wonderful state parks that line Highway 61. Trips into Canada to Fort William and Thunder Bay or up into the Boundary Waters at Ely always are adventures of discovery.
As well as hiking, we love to eat! When not making gourmet meals in our own kitchen, we have found numerous, sometimes hidden, restaurants serving everything from venison to burgers to four star cuisine.
There simply is no better place to relax and enjoy Nature in all her glory than our retreat on the North Shore.
