'The Cowboy House' is a very charming & historic home built by Plantation working families at the turn of the century.(1870''s!) This home offers three bedrooms and sleeps 6. It has been lovely restored and is a very special place to vacation in Hawaii.

The Cowboy House has a long lanai with big ocean Views and a big tree swing for grown ups and kids! The open living space leads to the bright and airy kitchen with views of the abundant garden. Your detached bathouse offers a rain head shower and is like a mini spa.

Family vacation

We had a fantastic stay at the ranch. The kids loved being able to have the freedom to be outside and interact with the animals and nature. It was a unique and memorable few days.

Idyllic rural property for a family vacation

Our nearly two-week stay at the Cowboy House at Puakea Ranch was a truly delightful experience for our family group of 6 with ages ranging from 5 to 75. The cottage is comfortable and well-equipped, and the swing and hammock were really popular with my granddaughter. The lush farm grounds, the ocean view, and the beautiful natural pool provide a tranquil setting for a longish stay, while still being close enough to Hawi township for grocery and crafts shopping and great espresso coffee. The farm animals - especially Romeo the goat - were a huge hit. Our stay was made all the more memorable by the friendly, responsive and always helpful approach of the property manager. I highly recommend the Puakea Ranch for a relaxing family holiday in beautiful and peaceful surrounds under a starry sky.

Perfect for Our Family

Kiddos ages 21mo, 6 & 8 could have entertained themselves on the ranch alone for the week we were on the Big Island. Animals, open spaces, pool and private cedar hot tub would have kept them happy. We were able to make it to kid friendly beaches and places to eat within 30 minutes or less and the kitchen was well suited for meals at home too. Plenty of fluffy towels (also yummy smelling) to keep up with the fun for our family of 6. Streaming apps available for when downtown was essential after long days of travel and play. Beach chairs were amazing to have at our disposal as well. The ants we had join us regularly were particularly fond of eggs but mostly left fruit alone. Do not forget mosquito defense and you may want to consider increasing your protections however you can and ensuring your also bring your favorite way to soothe the bites because they are inevitable. We would absolutely recommend this property to any vacationers who also don’t mind having a healthy dose of the outdoors, inside! Thanks so much for your hospitality and thoughtful care taking of the ranch!

The Puakea Ranch has been a labor of love and joy. The restoration of the 4 historic plantation era homes on this gorgeous old ranch were long overdue. Now fully restored, we are delighted to share them with visitors to The Big Island. Hawi, HI is a very special place and The Puakea Ranch is a once in a life time experience that you will want to come back to again and again.

What makes this property unique

Nothing like Fresh eggs from our hens, or picking greens out of our big garden for your dinner salad. Sipping coffee while watching the whales breach in the ocean beyond in a very private and unique setting far from the crowds of the resorts and condos.
