Located on the southwestern tip of Mount Desert Island, Bass Harbor is a charming and authentic Maine fishing village known for its scenic harbor, working lobster boats, and rugged coastal beauty. Unlike the busier towns on the island, Bass Harbor offers a quiet, laid-back atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for those seeking a more off-the-beaten-path experience.
One of the area’s most iconic landmarks is the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse, perched on a dramatic rocky coastline and offering one of the most photographed sunset views in Maine. The village is also home to some of the island’s freshest seafood, with local lobster shacks serving up the day’s catch straight from the harbor.
Outdoor enthusiasts can explore nearby trails in Acadia National Park, including Ship Harbor and Wonderland, both offering easy coastal walks with stunning ocean views. Bass Harbor is also the departure point for ferries to Swan’s Island and Frenchboro, perfect for adventurers looking to explore Maine’s offshore communities.

All the glass in the main kitchen and living room space allowed us to take in all the activity of the cute fishing town of Bass Harbor. The place was comfortable, just the right size for our family of four. The kids really enjoyed the upstairs loft area to themselves and our bedroom was nice. The seafood place just down the block was great and has a nice view as well, it's a nice place for some peace and relaxation near Acadia National Park.
The cottage was amazing! It had such a beautiful panoramic view from the living room windows. The decorations and aesthetic were so cute! The kitchen was really nice to use, and overall a 10/10 experience!
We had an amazing stay at the cottage! Extremely clean, comfortable and adorable with a great kitchen and living space. The location was perfect - remote enough to disconnect in the evenings, but a quick drive into Southwest Harbor for when we needed food, gas and other essentials. Bar Harbor and the main park areas were also an easy 20-30 minute drive, which was great for a week of exploring. The only thing I’ll note is that the cottage is located only a few feet from the street, and there were surprisingly a lot of trucks and cars whipping by throughout the night and early in the morning for such a small road. Otherwise, a great option for a couple or small family!
This was our first vrbo stay, and it did not disappoint. Everything was as advertised or better, although the description and pictures had already caused us to look forward to our stay very much. Beautiful views, delightful spaces, very thoughtful and fun themed decor, wonderfully clean, stocked with everything we could expect...we appreciate the love and care and attention to detail that went into this property. Nice location too - even the quieter side of the island has much to offer. Thank you for making our first vrbo experience and our vacation outstanding.
We had a wonderful winter stay at Mermaid cottage. The kitchen is well appointed with new appliances. The decor is simple beach cottage vibe with comfortable furniture overlooking a working harbor. While my husband worked at JAX lab in Bar Harbor, I worked remotely from the diningroom, looking up occasionally to watch the lobsterboats and birds putter or fly by.We did not use the upper floor. It has a spiral staircase and low ceiling but the lower floor but we did not need the space. The first floor is large, light and airy -- very spacious for a couple and a dog. This cottage is located on the quiet side of Acadia which we prefer as we like the serenity, wildlife and hiking. We shop en route at Standard Bakery in Portland or Notch Bakery in SW Harbor for bread and stop in Ellsworth for groceries but there is an IGA and other small markets nearby. there is also a wonderful outdoor market cart outside the SW Harbor libarary to srock up on reading materials. The Bass Harbor Library is stupendous.I walked to Bass Harbor lighthouse through the snow and played fetch with the dog on the strip of nearby beach daily. The snow was falling when we arrived, but the owner thoughfully had shovelled and salted before our arrival leaving supplies in case we needed more. One of the neighbors kindly plowed us out after another snowstorm.Justin, the host, was welcoming and attentive. We can't wait to return to this cozy cottage by the sea.
