About this property

Riverfront Historic McGuire Mountain House

Incredible views of the river and mountains from the two porches of this historic 150 year old home just down the road from Boone, NC. It has been renovated with high-end furnishings, an updated kitchen, and bathrooms. The house has a complimentary computer and there is fiber-optic Internet with WiFi throughout. It sits nestled between hills on 5.5 acres overlooking the beautiful New River. A bubbling creek runs down from the big barn past the deck with a hot tub, across to join the New River. Fish, swim or tube right in front or just relax and watch the river from a rocking chair on the front or upstairs porches. The house is famous too - it is on the cover of the best-selling novel Nobody's Fool by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Richard Russo.

The house was great, as always! We have stayed there for the past six to eight years. We love the location and the view; if you love to play in the water this is a great place to go. It sits right down from a park where you can fish or relax in the water, or if you have tubes you can put in there. Also, there are two tube rental places close to it, one is within walking distance. It is located about 15-20 minutes from Boone, so it is located in a good place. The house is an old house, but it is comfortable and handles an average family quite well. There are some issues that need to be addressed with the house, some are probably due to probably the hurricane that hit up there. I am happy to see that this house survived the storm. This is a great place to rent, and we look forward to being able to go next year. We thank the owners for letting us rent there.

What makes this property unique

The McGuire House was built in 1875 by Felix McGuire, an Irish immigrant who worked as a saddler for the British, who assigned him this land in the mountains for his contributions in the war. He gave it to his daughter and her husband to live in until the lumber trade slowed and they sold it to Pa Sherman who lived in it for 60 years until it was bought by C.Spencer!
