Bryn - Charming rural barn conversion. Stunning views. Short drive to the coast.
Bryn has it all...
Close to some of the most beautiful wild surfing beaches of North Cornwall (Newquay, Fistral, Watergate, Mawgan Porth, Constantine, to name a few!), this former barn has been converted to a cosy and characterful holiday retreat.
* Discount of over 10% for weekly bookings - calculated and included in your rental price. A further discount of 10% is offered for 'early bird' bookings made 2+ months in advance, for stays of a week or more.
Occupying the upper ground floor of this traditional Cornish stone building, Bryn benefits from stunning views across unspoilt countryside. The raised patio terrace is furnished with table and chairs and is a perfect spot for relaxing and enjoying the sun, peace and beauty of the Cornish countryside. At night, the lights of Bodmin can be seen from here, twinkling across the valley in the far distance. Sitting out under the Cornish night sky is an absolute must at Bryn. Away from light pollution, the stars are an incredible sight, as is the occasional comet. Bats and owls are frequently spotted in the evenings, while buzzards are common sights around the area during the day time.
Bryn has a garden with large lawn & off road parking. This adjoins a small area of lawn that belongs to the privately owned holiday home downstairs. Please note: part of our lawned area has an unfenced drop down to the drive.
Steps lead up to the raised patio and front door. The cottage is comfortably and tastefully furnished throughout, with close attention to detail and the visitor's every need. In keeping with the charming character of the barn conversion, there are beams throughout and an open fireplace in a stone hearth.
With the accommodation all on the first floor of the building, all rooms have views across the private garden, open valley or attractive cottage courtyard. Bryn sleeps four in two bedrooms: the master bedroom has a king-sized bed and beautiful wooden headboard. The second bedroom is twin-bedded. For guests with infants, we have a travel cot (please bring your own bedding - mattress size: 100 X 70), high chair, bath slip mat, night lights and toddler crockery and cutlery. Please let us know if you require the cot and high chair so we can get them out for your stay.
The spacious bathroom has a bath and electric shower over. The hallway has space for boots/shoes and coat hanging and there is a large Ordnance Survey map of the area on the wall, to help you plan your local outings!
The cosy lounge has a galley-style kitchen to one side, separated by the feature stone hearth and chimney breast. With comfortable soft furnishings, the lounge is a sunny and cosy space for relaxing with a book, a glass of wine and a roaring log fire in the colder months. A dining table and chairs are positioned by one of the large sunny windows, so you can enjoy the lovely views whilst eating.
The kitchen is well-equipped, to provide you with all the convenience you might have at home. Basic household essentials are also supplied (tea, coffee, sugar, kitchen linen, kitchen roll, washing-up liquid, soap, and so on) so that you don't have to bother with all those necessary but tedious purchases when you arrive.
The property is equipped with a television, DVD player, music centre and a selection of films and CDs. We also have a selection of boxed toys, games and puzzles for our younger visitors, as well as books, leaflets and maps about things to do in the local area and wider afield in Cornwall.
Bryn is close to the tiny hamlet of St Wenn and the small (but very well equipped!) town of St Columb Major. The coast is a short drive over rolling countryside, with the attraction of famous locations such as Padstow, Rock, Newquay and Port Isaac (famous location for the filming of 'Doc Martin') and home of the TV character 'Poldark'.
There is so much to do in Cornwall; being in a central location our visitors to Bryn are spoilt for choice! The popular Eden Project is only 10 miles away, while famous beaches and seaside locations of the North Coast are less than 15 minutes by car. The bustling towns of Wadebridge, Bodmin and Truro are just 9, 13 and 19 miles respectively. King Arthur's famous Tintagel Castle is a short drive and well worth a visit, both for its history and stunning views. The beautiful quayside location of Port Isaac (home for 'Doc Martin') is in the same direction and just 17 miles away.
Another famous spot for filming is the charming stately home, 'Prideaux Place', just outside Padstow. A mere 12 miles from the cottage, Prideaux Place has been to filmset location for the Rosamunde Pilcher film: 'Coming Home', as well as other productions made for German television such as 'Flowers in the Rain', 'The End of Summer', 'The Long Weekend' and 'The Red Dress'.
The Tate Gallery and Hepworth Museum are both in beautiful St. Ives and a short drive away is the quaint seaside town of Port Isaac, where the British series 'Doc Martin' is filmed. The pretty Lost Gardens of Helligan are worth a visit, as is the Cornish Maritime Museum at Falmouth.
Cornwall abounds with historical heritage sites and gardens, inclusing: Pendennis Castle, Lanhydrock House, St Mawes Castle, Cotele Tudor House, Glendurgan Garden, Trelissick Garden and Trerice Elizabethan Manor House.
The beaches are of course Cornwall's top attraction! The county offers some of the most beautiful beaches in the country. They are many and varied, ranging from quiet, sandy coves to the magnificent and famous surfing beaches such as Newquay and Watergate Bay. Surfing lessons are available from most of the large beaches and many beaches have additional facilities such as cafes, bars, restaurants and life guard care. Rock pooling and beach fishing are also popular activities, as is kayaking and beach kite-surfing.
Walking and cycling opportunities are plentiful in this area. The well known Camel trail, just 9 miles from Bryn Cottage, is a dis-used railway track that runs alongside the River Camel from Bodmin to Padstow, via Wadebridge. It runs through 11 miles of beautiful and unspoilt countryside, and is a haven for cyclists, walkers, runners and bird watchers. Although the surface is ideal for cycling, it is also level and smooth, making it suitable for prams and wheelchairs. Cycles of all types can be hired from a number of centres at Wadebridge, Bodmin and Padstow.
Cornwall is also a great holiday destination for families with children. Aside from the great beaches and quays with crabbing and rock-pooling fun, there are a great many other attractions for youngsters, including: nearby Crealy Adventure Park, Flambards Adventure Park at Helston, and The National Seal Sanctuary (also at Helston). Newquay is a short drive from Bryn Cottage and its attractions include: Newquay Zoo, Dairyland Farm World, Blue Reef Aquarium, Lappa Valley Steam Railway and Springfields Pony Centre.
Further afield, Penzance and the far west of Cornwall to Land's End are just over an hour's drive away. Here you can visit the stunning spot of St Michael's Mount and the amazing Minack open air theatre on the cliff edge at Porthcurno.

We stayed at 4 different properties this visit to the UK, and this was our favourite!Cosy and light filled, complete with home comforts. In addition we appreciated the very well equipped kitchen for staying in.Sadly the weather was shocking, but staying at Bryn, was a delight
Fantastic place to stay. Great facilities, friendly welcome pack. Already booked for next year :)

Perfect Cornwall Holiday Cottage
Bryn Cottage was the perfect place for our four-week holiday. The location is near the coast as well as the moor. The walking opportunities were endless. The cottage is well equipped, heating is efficient, and the beds very comfortable. We enjoyed everyday of our stay.

We are indeed so lucky to have this location: we are close to amazing beaches on the North coast as well as being a short drive from beautiful Bodmin Moor. We are also equidistant between north and south coasts and so exploring opportunities are many and varied.
The comfort of our guests is paramount to us so we are delighted to know that our visitors are appreciating this.
We had the most wonderful week staying in this perfect cottage. Amanda left a wonderful welcome tray for us.
The property was warm, comfortable (especially the bed) and had everything one could possibly need while on holiday.
Location perfect for exploring Cornwall. And the views from the cottage are perfect.
Would highly recommend.

Peace and Tranquility
We have been coming to Cornwall for 25 years and this is definitely the best, place we have stayed in! A comfortable, well equipped home, with stunning countryside views. We are already planning our next visit.

We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay. We try to create a real 'home from home' at Bryn as we want our visitors to relax from the moment they arrive.
You are right about the views...they are lovely and we are so lucky to be in a rare spot of real peace and tranquility.
Thank you so much for your review and do come and stay again soon!
This is our second stay at Bryn and it was just as great as the first time. Amanda is a great host, responsive and helpful. The cottage is well equipped, this time we were there with two professional chefs and they did NOT have one complaint about the kitchen, even the knifes were sharp which is always a challenge when your husband is a professional chef.Thank you Amanda and we will be back again if you will have us!

It was a pleasure having you to stay again. Communication is easy, and we are grateful for how well you look after the place. My husband is also a stickler for a good sharp kitchen knife, so they get sharpened regularly 😊. We hope you visit again soon.
Bryn Cottage was a fantastic base to explore Cornwall as a family of four. The cottage was beautifully presented, clean, comfortable and well -equipped. There wasn't anything we could possibly of needed to make our stay feel more like home.
The cottage is in peaceful countryside but within easy reach of many popular Cornish destinations. We enjoyed coming home to a quiet base, and making the most of the open fire on the day it rained, and sitting out on the porch area to watch the sunset.
We loved staying here and would happily return.

Tranquil Cornish cottage
We had a great holiday at this character property in the heart of the Cornish countryside, with total peace and beautiful views over the fields towards Bodmin. The cottage, which forms the upper level of a converted barn, is very comfortable and well equipped. The owner was a pleasure to deal with, very kind and helpful. We stayed over the Christmas week and there were even seasonal decorations to welcome us! Highly recommended.

We have been delighted to be able to offer Bryn Cottage for rent again, following a total refurbishment during 2009. We look forward to welcoming old and new visitors for the forthcoming 2010 season.
Very high quality upper floor barn conversion, well insulated, well heated even without the wood fire (which was great). This really is a very nice conversion- huge attention to detail.
Only criticism: was a bit disappointied to arrive after a long drive and find no supplies for at least one night by a cosy fire- so had to drive back out in search of fire wood and lighters. Also a bit light on with toilet paper. Recommend a little there to make the place a bit more welcoming...

Thank you for your review, Chris. We are so pleased that you found Bryn cosy and that you appreciated the efforts we make to ensure our visitors have everything they need. Thank you for the feedback about the log burner - we usually do supply some wood etc so I'm not sure what happened there. We will get on that one - thank you.
We hope we have the pleasure of welcoming you again in the future.
In the midst of silence and tranquility we found this comfortable cottage in Cornwall. Fortunately, the owner gave us directions to reach this beautiful place. Otherwise we wouldn't have found it. Including the Co-op in Roche this was all we needed. Inside at the set table we enjoyed the view across the fields, with a glimpse of the Church of St Wenn on the horizon. From the garden we were greeted every day by a rabbit. And every day a bird of prey (a buzzard?) perched on a power pole in the adjacent field, looking for prey. We ourselves went looking for the beautiful places in Cornwall every day.

Thank you for your review, Cornelie. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay, and that you saw some of the wildlife that regularly visits this rural spot. I do hope you come to beautiful Cornwall again, and that we can host you once more. Best wishes.
A beautiful cottage situated in a beautiful location. Well equipped with all the facilities you would expect. It was perfect for our little family and very (young) child friendly. The only negative about the property was that it wasn't completely clean. The hoover didn't work correctly (we tried it while we were there) and the carpet wasn't free from debris when we arrived. There were also quite a few cobwebs (but then the cottage is rural so maybe this is expected). We did have a slight problem when we arrived but were able to speak to the Owner about this quickly. Overall, we loved our holiday at Bryn Cottage and would recommend it to others.

Thank you for your review. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay and had everything you needed for your family. We appreciate you bringing the hoover to our attention - our cleaner had told us when she prepared for your stay that she was concerned that it was failing so we have ordered a replacement. As for the cobwebs - you are quite right, we have our fair share of spiders in that rural location! I am also pleased you felt you could contact us by telephone. It is always our priority to make sure all our visitors have a comfortable and relaxed stay. We hope we can welcome you and your family to stay with us again soon.

Lovely cottage with exceptional views
Bryn cottage comprises the upper level of a two storey barn-conversion just outside the hamlet of St Wenn and enjoys spectacular views over the surrounding countryside. On arrival there was a problem with the front door key (which had been bent out of shape by the previous tenants) but the owner and her local helper provided us with a replacement very quickly indeed so we were soon enjoying the cottage.
Apart from the stunning view across countryside towards Bodmin, my main impression of the cottage is the high quality of the finish, especially the kitchen and bathroom, which would not be out of place in one's home rather than a holiday cottage. We also appreciated the owner's welcome pack of tea and coffee, a bottle of wine, and cakes.
We chose this cottage partly for its central Cornwall location, making it relatively easy to visit both South and North coast, though the terrible April weather during our stay meant that our sight-seeing was a bit limited. The gardens at Glendurgan and the stream railway at Bodmin were my personal highlights.
All in all, I hope to stay again in the future.

We are so glad you had a happy stay and look forward to welcoming you to Bryn Cottage again in the future!

We are sorry that you misunderstood the detail of our listing. We appreciate that someone in your party needed to rest and sleep for much of the stay. We make it clear in our listing that Bryn Cottage is an entire home that occupies the upper storey of a two-storey barn conversion. In the 20 plus years that we have been letting Bryn to holiday makers, and spending our own vacations there, we have never had mention or concern about noise from the holiday property below, nor from the other cottages that form the little cluster of buildings in this rural spot. We are pleased that you found Bryn to be comfortable and well equipped, as well as providing you with a good base to explore the surrounding area.

It was a pleasure hosting Daniel and family. We happily recommend them to other owners.
We had a lovely couple of weeks here with our young boys. Nice and quiet area overlooking lovely views of the countryside. Property was immaculate with bedding changed at the start of the second week. Cottage is close to Bodmin, Wadebridge and Padstow. Amanda is a lovely host and it’s easy to communicate via the Vrbo app. Thank you again, we had a lovely time.
Perfect hideaway - Bryn cottage was a haven perfectly placed to visit either coastline
If you want peace and quiet then Bryn is perfect
Loudest noise was the owl hooting in the evenings
Fabulous equipped kitchen - lots of hot water for a bath after trekking through the mud along the coastlines and fields
Then relaxing in front of the log burner with a glass or two of wine
Amanda was quick to respond to initial queries but once at Bryn we had no need to contact her as an excellent instruction book was on site
We had a fabulous break
Thank you Amanda
Would definitely recommend Bryn

About the host
Hosted by Amanda Handley
We bought Bryn back in 2004, having spent a number of happy holidays there. We live near London but try to get to Cornwall as often as we can. For us, it is a real home-from-home and we hope you will feel the same when you visit.
Why they chose this property
Bryn is in a perfect location - a good way into Cornwall yet close to both North and South coasts. We have close access to both the main A30 and the A395 Atlantic Highway, meaning we can easily access most parts of Cornwall. The cottage is in the middle of the countryside in an amazingly beautiful and peaceful spot. For us, it provides a real escape from busy city life - and we hope it will do the same for you.
What makes this property unique
We are close enough to the beautiful beaches to reach them in a short drive, yet far enough away from the busy roads to feel at peace even at high season. Our favourite things about Bryn are the absolute peace and quiet, the green valley views and the amazing star-lit skies at night, far from any light pollution.
