About this property

Chewton School House

A Converted schoolroom from the 1960’s with hints of mid century decor and luxury finishes, this charming self contained property is located in the historic goldfields village of Chewton, a few minutes drive from Castlemaine. A quiet setting on the owners fully fenced property (safe for your pets) you have use of the BBQ and any of the veggies in the garden. Stroll to the Red Hill Hotel for a drink open Friday evening and weekends, and it’s a short drive to the Wesley Hill market which operates each Saturday morning, wineries and many other attractions are a short drive away.
The building is separate from the main house so you have privacy and plenty of room to enjoy a meal or drink at the outdoor table.
Tea/coffee and breakfast staples are included in the well equipped kitchenette. Access to the BBQ and your pets are most welcome!
Please park anywhere on the left side of the drive. The accommodation is the building on the left, not the house facing the street. Enter down a couple of stairs on the right hand side and the blue door is next to the water tank. We are on town water and the tank is used for the garden.

Peace & quiet in Chewton

Very much enjoyed Chewton over the Easter break - autumn, places to visit and peace and quiet of the Old schoolhouse. No noisy classroom activities there anymore. Just very restful and comfortable.

Lovely stay in picturesque garden

We enjoyed our stay at the Chewton School House. The property is dog-friendly, and our pups enjoyed lying beside us while we had our meals and coffee at the table next to the lovely garden. Very picturesque. Kathryn is a great host, easy to communicate with, and very accommodating.

Not totally senior-friendly

The premises were totally suitable for a younger couple. As an older couple we found the entry steps and the general access not totally appropriate. Had we been twenty years younger it would have been totally adequate. The bathroom and bedroom were excellent.

A lovely hideaway

The property was lovely, clean, peaceful, comfortable. The host had thought of everything. Beautiful country hospitality!Suggest not the ideal place to take children, but that suited us. There is not heaps to do in Chewton, so you would want to have a car to get around, but we had a lovely time: good spot to stay if you are looking to tourist Castlemaine Parkrun. We also walked the Castlemaine Diggings National Park, and that was fascinating. Well worth the visit.

Great stay on a beautiful property

Our stay with our pup was really comfortable, and Kathy even bakes us a chocolate cake and cookies. Very prompt communication, and super quick check in process! I’d love to see what it’s like in warmer weather ☺️

The Best "School" Experience

The best initial impression was the vastness of the accommodation - a long schoolroom divided in half with sensational 12 windows the whole one side of the building. Divided in half, the living area is ample and light. The bedroom is huge, and the pod bathroom is a clever, comfortable design. The kitchenette is small, but we managed to cook all our meals in the facility using the bench oven/griller and microwave. We had 2 dogs with us who adored the garden, where they ran free and were very happy. The proximity to Castlemaine is excellent without the hassle of busy roads and crowds. Everything was EXCELLENT.

Week away

Fantastic accomodation, very comfortable, yummy snacks. This added up to a really great experience for our week away. Our dog Roxy enjoyed herself as well despite being restricted to a leash in the garden, (being a small terrier she is an escape artist!). We will definitely be staying again when we return to Castlemaine.

Quiet and cosy

A great spot for exploring Castlemaine, Maldon and Bendigo. The schoolhouse is located next to the owner’s house on the outskirts of Chewton. Despite being on the property it is self-contained and quiet. I was welcomed with a fridge stocked with breakfast staples and some lovely home baking, cheese biscuits and chocolate cake. There are no cooking facilities but there is a microwave and a toaster oven, so it is possible to eat at home by purchasing prepared meals. The bed and living room were both very comfortable and the smart TV allows you to use your own streaming services. I had a lovely stay.
