Incredible Hand-Hewn Square Log Cabin on the North Shore of Lake Superior.
You and your friends and family will adore this classic hand-hewn, square-log cabin. The 4 bedroom cabin was built in the old Finnish tradition on a very private stretch of Lake Superior shore line. The winding driveway leads to 5 acres of land that you can roam. Search for and find the abundant wildflowers in the woods or relax on the shelf-rock shoreline. The screen porch makes for a fly free environment - perfect for drinking your favourite cocktails or watching the spectacular lake storms without getting wet! This home truly holds the character of what one envisions a historic Lake Superior cabin to be. Many family memories have been created here! The owners, who live out of the country and can't visit very often, encourage renters to enjoy their beloved Finn House. Pets are allowed with prior approval.

Three of us enjoyed three days in this old log house surrounded by excellent birds. We are birding enthusiasts and 34 species just on the property and off shoreHighly recommended
The Finn House was perfect for our group…cozy and well equipped! We were busy with hiking, fishing, shopping, swimming in Lake Superior and relaxing! We’ll be back!
Hundred year old cozy 4-br cabin with well-equipped kitchen and fireplace right on the lake, and no other cabins in sight. Perfect for a serene, woodsy stay.
Wonderful home sitting with views you could never get sick of, plenty of room with 4 bedrooms and 2 and a half bathrooms, set up with everything you need and then some, If you want more spectacular scenery, a 2 hour drive up the NorthShore will get you to the Canadian border with plenty of time to stop at all the scenic look outs they have along the way.
Beautiful, tranquil, charming with lots of personality. We hope come soon back again.
And thank you for the lovely flowers in the house to great us.

All's good, clean and in-order. Very welcoming and comfortable for three families.

Finn House is a lovely old cabin on the shore of Lake Superior, feels steeped in good memories and joy. Cozy, welcoming, a perfect fit for four old friends who love the area. Spacious and comfortable.
We took our in-laws (who live in New Mexico) for their first trip up north and we all enjoyed the cozy cabin, including building fires each night. It has all necessary amenities and opening the windows and doors to hear the crashing waves of Lake Superior was so relaxing.
Note: be prepared for lots of mosquitos in the exterior of the property (mostly only an issue when we were loading and unloading vehicle)--just pack some good bug spray.
This was our 3rd awesome stay at The Finn House. The location is great. Love the quiet and privacy every time we've stayed here. Watching the amazing sunrises every morning from the shore or sitting near the windows inside with a cup of coffee is a great way to start the day! Already looking forward to next year!
Charming cabin right on the shore of beautiful Lake Superior. Perfect way to unplug from the world and take in simple pleasures. Old school charm at a location with incredible views and access to the lake.

Lovely historic cabin in the woods
We had an amazing time relaxing by the fireplace and enjoying the scenery from the two large picture windows overlooking the rocky shoreline. Cabin was spacious and comfortable. Great location, close to the superior hiking trail - cross-country skiing and snow shoeing trails nearby. Close enough to Grand Maris to enjoy dinner and a drink in the evening.

Lakeside coziness
We loved our stay at Finn House, feeling practically on the water. Even with the house closed up, we could hear the surf wash into shore. The windowside pairs of chairs was so inviting. A rustic gem on the North Shore.
My family and I had a wonderful and enjoyable stay at Finn House!! Had one afternoon of Lake Superior being “quiet” and children and grandchildren able to swim just off the rocks and son in law able to launch his canoe for an evening paddle!!! (Glad I packed the beach towels!) Wonderful to have 4 bedrooms and 3 baths!! Had fun cooking 2 meals together in the well stocked kitchen and enjoyed many good meals in nearby Grand Marias!! Finn House is an authentic hand hewn log cabin…my family wants to come back! Thanks for the memories Finn House!!!
Loved the unique construction of this home. Yes, it's older, but was clean and perfect for what we needed. It's right on the lake which is also what we wanted and within driving distance of things to do. It could use some TLC, but we were very happy with this property. The communications were quick and friendly. We did love that it was secluded and quiet. While there were neighbors close, you could not see them except from the lake or walking the beach. Loved hearing the waves crash along the rock shoreline. Also pet friendly.
My husband, dog and I just spent a week at this wonderful cabin. We have been going to the North Shore and renting out cabins for decades. This was our first visit to this cabin and we will go back. I usually prefer the older cabins/homes as they have the best locations. This cabins property is spectacular. The cabin is cozy despite its larger size. I appreciate older cabins and loved the hand hewn structure. I will say if you are into modern shiny spaces with quartz countertops and stainless steel appliances in the kitchen this is not the place for you. If you like a place where you can feel there are many stories there, this is the perfect spot.

Beautiful, Rustic cabin
We Stayed over Christmas. It was incredibly cold, but the house stayed warm. We had plenty of wood for the fireplace. The beds were very comfortable. Greta location, right across from cross country ski trail and close to towns of Tofte and Lutsen. Amazing views from the 2 large picture windows lakeside.
We really enjoyed our stay at this property. The historic cabin was charming and the common area was larger than the pictures on the listing made it look, and the view was stunning. Our 3 kids (11, 7, and 4) enjoyed playing on the rocks and we enjoyed a campfire out on the rocks as well. FYI to parents, keep a close eye on your younger kids as there are steep drop offs along the edge of the rocks in some places. The owner was responsive. We had a nice family hike about 2 min away at the Onion River trail and enjoyed awesome fireworks in Tofte. The owner was very responsive. I would stay here again.

About the host
Hosted by Charlotte Durie
Our great grandfather built Finn House in 1943, as his summer cottage. The logs were brought from a Finnish settlement and rebuilt close to the shoreline. His daughters loved the place, often spending months in situ. I first went in 1975 with my grandmother and father and like the generations before me - fell in love. My sons have followed suit. Until the pandemic I had been coming annually and have my artwork in local galleries. My love of trees and the wilderness was born on the North Shore, and informs much of my painting.
Why they chose this property
Back in 1943 the area was a lot less populated. Highway 61 followed a different route and had been newly put in. It was built as a summer getaway for my great grandfather, who was then president of the Northern States Power company in Minneapolis. Each generation has fallen in love with the property and surrounding area, and subsequently passed it to the next generation.
What makes this property unique
Aside from modern utilities, Finn House has not changed a great deal and retains its log cabin charm of the 1940s. Two large windows gave a fantastic view onto the lake, offering a mesmerising view at times, and others powerful wave action. The shoreline is private and includes a secluded bay and a promontory, allowing enough space to explore. Despite the feeling of privacy - the cabin is situated a couple of minutes from 61 and the Gitchee Gumee bike trail - not far from the Lutsen ski resort, the Superior Hiking Trail and Tofte and Lutsen. Grand Marais is a 20 minute drive. And the BWCAW is accessible via dirt roads inland. The hardest issue will be deciding whether to stay home or go out and play!
