About this property

The Botanist Rest-Ventnor IOW-2 Bedroom/sea views/beach/walking

The Botanist Rest – Charming Victorian Cottage with Sea Views in Ventnor

Dating back to the 1840s, The Botanist Rest is a beautifully restored Victorian flint cottage in Ventnor, Isle of Wight, tucked away on a peaceful side street in one of the island’s most sought-after coastal towns. Known as the “English Mediterranean”, Ventnor enjoys a unique microclimate thanks to its sheltered position beneath St Boniface Down, home to the world-famous Ventnor Botanical Gardens — the inspiration behind this unique and stylish retreat.

Blending historic Victorian charm with elegant botanical interiors, The Botanist Rest offers the perfect Isle of Wight holiday cottage for couples, families, or anyone seeking a relaxing coastal getaway in Ventnor. From the moment you step inside, the botanical theme flows throughout the property, extending all the way to the beautiful private kitchen garden, where guests can enjoy fresh herbs and seasonal produce during their stay.

Lounge & Living Space
Step into the cosy lounge and discover a charming Victorian botanical retreat, thoughtfully styled with plants, books, and unique curiosities. The comfortable seating area includes a luxurious leather Chesterfield sofa and armchair, offering space for up to four guests to relax after a day exploring the Isle of Wight beaches, countryside, and attractions.
Guests can enjoy full use of the Bang & Olufsen Smart TV with Netflix and Amazon Prime, perfect for cosy evenings in. For those balancing work with relaxation, or feeling inspired by the island surroundings, there is also a dedicated workspace/writer’s nook.
If you’d like to fully embrace the botanical experience, feel free to care for the cottage plants during your stay — a little mindful watering is always appreciated!

Dining, Kitchen & Private Garden
The charming dining space features a beautiful original Victorian fireplace, creating the perfect setting to enjoy meals together and reflect on the day’s adventures.
The well-equipped kitchen includes:
Oven & gas hob
Microwave, toaster & kettle
Dishwasher & fridge/freezer
Dualit coffee machine for freshly brewed morning coffee
Step outside into the private enclosed garden patio, a peaceful suntrap ideal for morning coffee, afternoon cocktails, or alfresco dining. Guests are welcome to forage herbs, fruits, and seasonal produce from the cottage’s own kitchen garden, adding something truly special to your stay.
The garden is fully enclosed and illuminated in the evenings, creating a magical setting to relax among grapevines and fruit trees after sunset. A cocktail-making set, herbs, spices, and a recipe book are also provided for guests wishing to enjoy a drink under the stars.

Bedrooms & Sea View Balcony
Please note: as a charming Victorian cottage, the staircase is narrower and steeper than a modern staircase, which may be unsuitable for guests with limited mobility.

Main Bedroom
The spacious principal bedroom enjoys beautiful views of St Boniface Down and features a comfortable king-size bed, vanity area with mirror and hairdryer, hanging space, and freshly laundered towels and bedding. There is also room for a travel cot if required.

Second Bedroom
The second bedroom features a full-sized bunk bed, suitable for children or up to two medium-build adults, along with hanging space, a mirror, and fresh towels and bedding.
French doors open onto a stunning private roof terrace balcony with breathtaking sea views and a bistro dining set — the perfect place for a morning coffee or sunset drink overlooking Ventnor.

Bathroom
The upstairs bathroom includes a shower over bath, a heated towel rail, sink, mirror, and a toilet.
As part of the cottage’s quirky character, the ceiling is pitched, making the shower height slightly lower than average. Taller guests may prefer to relax in the bath while enjoying the handheld shower feature and peaceful surroundings.

Why Stay at The Botanist Rest?
With its Victorian charm, botanical interiors, sea views, private garden, balcony terrace, and fantastic Ventnor location, The Botanist Rest offers a truly memorable Isle of Wight escape. Whether you’re planning a romantic retreat, family holiday, walking break, or relaxing coastal getaway, this unique cottage is perfectly placed for exploring everything the island has to offer.

Nicely presented with everything one could need (although some oven gloves would have been nice). Great shower. Handily placed for the shops and beach.

This is a beautiful property. The location allows for a view of the ocean with respite from the strong shore winds. Very clean and cozy.

Great home base to explore the island!

Great stay for two moms and two young boys - house had everything we needed to cook at night and was a great base to explore the island during the day. Loved being able to walk down the steps to the playground overlooking the sea and then down to the beach at Ventnor. Highly recommend!

Immaculately presented and homely

Immaculately presented, homely property. Compact but met our needs. Unfortunately didn’t get to explore Ventnor as used it as a base for the IOW festival. Host helpfully gave discount code for IOW ferry and generally very helpful and efficient.

Myself and my husband Ben, have two wonderful, cheeky, little children together. As a family we love to explore as much as we can, we enjoy travelling, and have enjoyed the hospitality provided by other hosts, as well as exploring the countryside in our campervan. We are both originally from the Isle of Wight, and spend a lot of time visiting family in the area.

Although we now live in Brighton, UK, we are always happy to recommend places to eat and to explore on the Island. Having grown up in the area, we have lots of local knowledge! We have tried to ensure that The Nautilus & The Botanist Rest are both a beautiful and comfortable spaces, we hope you enjoy your stay in Cowes and Ventnor
