The indoor space was very cozy and the backyard was like walking in an outdoor museum. Clearly a lot of time and love was put into creating such a unique space. The hosts were very accommodating especially in regard to a family emergency to deal with.
Yes a well organized place. Loved the hot tub beautiful backyard. Very gracious hosts. Always available

Dear Mary,
Thank you so much for your kind words and for choosing to stay with us! We are thrilled to hear that you enjoyed the backyard and found the hot tub to be a highlight of your trip—it is one of our favorite features of the property.
We strive to be as helpful and available as possible for our guests, so it’s wonderful to know you felt well-supported during your stay. You were a pleasure to host, and we would love to welcome you back to our Albany home whenever your travels bring you back to California!
Warmly,
Gregory and Blanca
Unit is a small space thoughtfully designed and elegantly decorated. Backyard is landscaped to perfection. Hosts available and could not have been more welcoming and accommodating. Hope to return to this place.
Overall, this property was as advertised. It is a basement unit in a home. The host allowed an early check-in with their friend to accommodate our flight schedule. They offered suggestions for local restaurants. We had a severe weather event during our stay, and our host responded immediately to clean up a small amount of flood water on a carpet in the entryway.
My husband and I just finished our third visit at Gregory and Bianca's lovely and distinctive space. It is a small space ingeniously and thoughtfully executed with a very comfortable bed, lovely big shower and tub, a small desk and provisions for refrigerating and heating very simple meals. The yard is lovely and the neighborhood safe, attractive and very walkable. It is the perfect spot for us to stay then visiting our grandchildren.
This unit is so creative in its ability to offer everything you need. Our favorite was the microwave with attached toaster. The location is superb with easy walking to surrounding commercial areas. The backyard was amazing- beautifully planted with outdoor seating areas, grill and pizza oven. I wish we had been able to enjoy it more. Our host was the best - informative, helpful and fun to chat with. Overall a great trip.
Greg & Blanca were accommodating hosts, even allowing me to check in early after a long flight from the east coast. They have a beautiful backyard with bamboo, lemon and palm trees. Though I didn't use them the outdoor jacuzzi and grill looked inviting. Inside, the queen bed was comfy, the shower provided ample hot water, and the complementary wine, tea & coffee was a welcome surprise. The location, being a couple blocks from both San Pablo and Solano, was ideal.
This well-planned apartment was thoughtfully equipped with all we needed for a comfortable and very convenient stay for us during a visit for our daughter's graduation. We were able to walk nearly everywhere, many amazing restaurants in this area! (Good thing we were walking.)
Our hosts were very friendly and always ready to answer any questions. A busy week for us with family in from far and wide so not much time to visit but very nice folks. Would stay here again !
Wish we'd found it for prior visits actually.

The hosts, Gregory and Blanca, showed great hospitality, which we genuinely appreciated. However, the basement apartment and the facilities were indeed disappointing. As tourists, we experienced the worst one can expect. First, there was a significant sink leak on the first night we stayed there, followed by a roof/wall leak during the heavy rain on Christmas Eve, which soaked and stained a pillow. This led to insects and ants running around the counter and the floor, along with the typical basement odor, which triggered my wife's allergies. All of these issues were enough to ruin a much-desired vacation.Additionally, the apartment is tiny—much smaller than the claimed size. About one-third of the space was actually occupied by the entryway and the woodshop. The actual space in the apartment usable by guests is no more than that of a regular hotel room. After we checked out, I sent a message to the host asking for consideration of a reasonable discount and partial refund due to these issues, but he has never responded. To be fair, on the positive side, I want to mention that the garden accessible to guests is indeed beautiful. The hot spa is also available to guests; I used it once, and it was nice. Finally, I want to express that I am having mixed feelings while writing this review. The hosts are nice, hospitable people, and I really don't want them to feel bad. However, I also want to be honest about my experience, and that’s what I have written.

Dear Daren,
While we strive for every guest to have a perfect stay, we must provide a factual account of these events for the benefit of the hosting community and future guests.
You shared upon arrival that you no longer stay in hotels because they cannot meet your wife’s extreme environmental sensitivities. Understanding this, we went to extraordinary lengths to accommodate her, including an exhaustive deep-cleaning using a specialized 'Rainbow' water-filtration vacuum and ensuring the unit was completely scent-free.
Regarding your specific complaints:
The Sink: The faucet was in perfect condition at check-in. It was clear to my plumber and me it was broken during your stay when the internal extension was pulled beyond its design. We offered a perfectly functional workaround—using the dedicated water-filter faucet—so as not to disturb your stay. However, you insisted on an immediate repair. We obliged, cancelling our personal plans that same day and paying $1,000 for emergency holiday plumbing services to ensure your comfort.
The 'Leak' and Odor: Your stay coincided with a historic atmospheric river storm. The water you found near the bed was a direct result of a window being left open to the storm. Any 'basement odor' you experienced was the result of this rainwater being allowed into the unit.
Insects: In California, heavy rain can occasionally lead to a few ants seeking higher ground. When you reported a few ants, we responded immediately. You told me there were 10-15. You told me you were afraid they would be brought back home with you! We found no evidence of any other insects or pests.
The Listing: Our unit's size and layout are accurately represented on our listing. We were surprised to hear this complaint only after you requested a refund.
We were deeply disappointed that, despite our immediate and costly responses to issues caused during your stay, you requested a refund in exchange for your review. We take great pride in our hospitality, but we cannot accept responsibility for issues caused by guest negligence, or historic weather events.
We very much appreciated the cozy apartment that Greg and Blanca provided us. All was very clean and comfortable. The bed was super comfortable! Although we did not use the outside grounds, the outdoor pizza oven and grill truly impressed me! I would have liked to make some dough and pull together some tasty toppings for an authentic brick oven.
Thanks so much for all the hard work it takes to create and maintain such a lovely place.
It is a wonderful little basement VRBO. It is small, perfect for two people but it is so well laid out it never felt cramped. It is quite adorable and well-decorated. Despite its size, it has all the necessities, Kereg, hotplate, and refrigerator. Great shower and jacuzzi tub. Extremely comfortable bed.
The backyard which is available for use is amazing. Beautiful landscaping. Use of hot tub, wood pizza oven and grill with small patio.
Owners live upstairs and are extremely nice and always available to help if anything is needed.
I cannot recommend this enough for one to two adults.
Fantastic location and a short walking distance to Solano Ave
We (my husband and I) have stayed with "Gregory of Albany" several times as we visit our son and his family who live in Albany. It is perfect for our needs - a convenient, clean and comfortable place to be based while visiting family. It is a basement apartment with a very comfortable bed, excellent shower, and basic cooking equipment (microwave, refrigerator and freezer, coffee maker and basic dishes). There is a small desk area and reading chair - overall an ideal "base" for one or two people. The workmanship of the setting is impressive and there is a lovely garden with a wonderful hotter. the host is very easy to communicate with. AND thanks for the bottle of wine!
We had a terrific time here. The unit is like a superbly appointed little yacht. We had everything we needed and more. Very comfortable bed and chairs, lights everywhere, towels galore and very nice owners. We did not meet Greg but Blanca (who was warm and funny and personable) gave us the complete tour and Greg responded to all texts and emails. Gorgeous back yard. Palm trees, beautiful tile work everywhere. A very nice place to sit at dusk with a glass of wine. Even an elaborate pizza oven. Cheers!
The property is charmingly set up, but it is cozy. Enough room with seating benches, desk, arm chair. There is a kitchenette and a big shower area. Pretty much a full sized fridge and freezer. One of the big attractions, though, is the spacious backyard with the grill, pizza oven, and hot tub. The other big attraction is the kindness of the hosts. Greg communicated quickly and was very welcoming and attentive. He was out of town for our stay but his daughter was there to show us the unit and was super friendly. Loved our stay here and would happily return. Excellent proximity to UC Berkeley. Safe, residential neighborhood with open street parking.

Thank you Mimi, for a beautifully written review. I’m so glad you actually used the wood burning pizza oven. Few have, but I’m excited when they do, because it loves to be used and makes for such enjoyable moments.

Yard was beautiful and inviting. Bed was very comfortable. Shampoo and soap not provided. Not a place for the elderly. My husband and I are 80 years old and in great physical shape. We were concerned about the stairs that did not have railings. There were 2 tripping hazards. One as you enter the unit and one in the bedroom. Lighting after entering the unit from outside was not very good. Not for those who are claustrophobic.
My husband and my stay in Albany at Blanca and Greg’s property was lovely. They are terrific hosts, with a clean, beautiful, well kept property. They were gracious and welcoming, even inviting us to join them one evening for a backyard party featuring their outdoor pizza oven. While it is a small unit, we were comfortable. And it is so conveniently located, you’ll walk everywhere. Would recommend!
Reading the reviews had me cautiously excited about renting the place and let me tell you once I arrived it did not disappoint! First let me say, Greg and Blanca, thank you for opening your home to us. Blanca met us upon our arrival and she was so welcoming just like meeting s old friend. When we entered the yard I felt like I was transported to little Italy they really took care in the design. The quarters were cozy and had everything you could possibly need. We truly enjoyed our stay and how close we were to the vicinity of our daughters apartment in Berkeley -just 5 minutes away. I look forward to our return and hopefully your home will be available for our stay! ☺️
