About this property

The Writer's Cabin, Jacuzzi, Fireplace, in Town!

The Writer's Cabin is a quaint, long established residence hidden in the oldest part of town. It has been fully restored and modernized to provide all the creature comforts and yet remain historic in nature. This is an original "Tiny home" as it was originally constructed nearly 100 years ago. We did expand the bath to accommodate the jacuzzi, and we raised the ceilings and brightened the entire cabin. A sauna is available on a first come first serve basis for an additional fee. Contact us for details. The Writer's Cabin is set amidst lush landscaping for privacy, and the cabin is only steps from the harbor. All amenities are provided including an enameled cast iron gas fireplace, a therapeutic air tub for two, a queen bed, a well equipped modern kitchen with oven and stove, smart Roku TV, an antique secretary writing desk, high speed wireless internet (best in town), and various objects of interest representative of famous writers and local writers including locally written books and Ernest Hemmingway's favorite model of typewriter. A sauna is available for a fee on a first come first serve basis and you can inquire with us here- preferably before you book so that you can see if it is available during your stay. Attention Air BnB guests: If you paid the dog fee through Air BnB it only covers one dog, you will be responsible to contact the cabin owner to pay for any 2nd dog. We do not recommend more than 2 guests in the Writer's Cabin, it has one queen bed and one non fold out sofa. The base rate includes 2 guests and additional guests are $30 per guest per night up to 3 total guests in the cabin maximum. 4 guests are possible but it is going to be crowded. Dogs are $75 per dog with a maximum of 2 dogs. The property is kept exceptionally clean and we try to remove all evidence of dog hair between stays. Our cleaners work very hard to remove all evidence of dogs and that takes time and effort and we appreciate anything you can do to help.

With nine windows and one skylight, there is great natural light throughout the little cabin.

Seagulls and fog greet you when you rise.

This is simply a spectacular location right in the historic residential heart of Grand Marais very close to the harbor- yet still private and relatively quiet compared almost anywhere else in bustling town of Grand Marais. We are not on a busy street or on highway 61. You are perfectly positioned to discover the town and participate in the small town buzz.

The outdoor space has a balanced blend of sun and shade, functionality and whimsicality. This is a space intended as an exclusive retreat from the rigors of small town life. It is designed so that you can be as private as your vacation requires. Dense shrubs, apple trees and tall fences ensure your own seclusion. The feeling is that of a secret retreat just off the main avenues.

We love dogs. Dogs are allowed at this property with your acceptance of our dog rules and payment of the fee. No dogs under 1 year old. Each pet fee is good for one dog. $75 per dog per stay and it is the guest's responsibility to ensure payment of the fee and to be familiar with our dog rules. No cats or other creatures :-). Dogs are not allowed on furniture without a fresh, clean blanket that you provide that they can not scratch away. Dogs must be kept in portable kennels if you are not present.

Lastly, we recommend you consider trip insurance- especially in winter, or if you are taking classes that may be cancelled. We have discounted our rates on our direct website by an additional 7% (the total savings between our direct site and say... another famous site is now 14-21% but only if you book on our direct site). We are doing this so that you may select trip insurance during your booking process. It will be offered to you while you are completing your booking and they charge 7%. We do not make any money on that. The cancellation policy we have had for 10 years is as follows:

You may cancel within 48 hours of your booking transaction for any reason. After that you can cancel with a 10% penalty up until 60 days prior to your arrival. After that you may cancel but your deposit can not be refunded.

If you have trip insurance you can be reimbursed according to which policy you chose. And we are subsidizing it for you by having reduced our rental rates well below any other rates where our properties can be found. It's up to you, pocket the savings and run the risk of cancellation, or still get some savings and have the peace of mind of having some of your investment in your vacation protected in case of unforeseen events. Here is a link to the insurance company, otherwise it is all presented to you when you book so that you can make an informed decision at that time: https://cdn.orez.io/sc/content/docs/RentalGuardian%20-%20Overview.pdf?v=0116da11ea74cfb3b939b87f3a2c5dc676da5f83 The Writer's Cabin is a quaint, long established residence hidden in the oldest part of town. We went up to Grand Marais to celebrate our 45th anniversary. Todd and Susan had great communication with us before our trip. Even giving out tips about Grand Marais that others may not know. The location of the Writers Cabin could not be better. Everything is easily walkable. Just a half a block away from the harbor, but you have a great feeling of being secluded at the same time. We were up for 6 nights, but only used our car 2 days for excursions. The cabin is quaint and has everything you really need. We would definitely go back again.

Todd and Susan made sure we were set and comfortable during a very cold (windchills of -40 to -60) weekend. The cottage was cozy, clean and had some great books. The real treat was the gas fireplace.

Thank you very much for the kind words. The Danish, as well as some other Scandinavian cultures, have a word for what you are describing. But it doesn't really have an English translation: "Hygge". The best we can do is to say it means "Cozy". I sometimes wonder if we should have called it the Hygge Cabin. Cheers, come again. Todd and Susan

The owners and managers of the Fisherman's Cabin are Todd and Susan Miller. Susan is originally from Duluth Mn and Todd from the Twin Cities. They have sailed the world's oceans together on their 35 foot sloop 'Snow Day', and have now settled down here in Grand Marais since 2003. Todd is a licensed Captain, and served on the local park board and planning commission for many years. He is also active in community projects with area youth and founded the Grand Marais Music Collaborative, a 5013c non profit focused on raising funds for music lessons for area youth. Susan is a retired Special Education teacher at the local charter school. Todd's interests include leading a local dance band, building and restoring fun things, messing about in boats, and managing Real Estate. Susans interests include gardening, thrift store exploring, and cooking. They both love to travel and learn.

Why they chose this property

This is a special property that occupies a unique nitche in the local rental market. The location is incredibly convenient to everything. Once you have arrived you can toss your car keys in the lake and walk to wherever you need to go. This is a great location for the summer festivals or for winter hibernating. In Summer, music and art seem to permeate the town and strains of music can be heard most times of the day and in to the evening. Artists are plying their wares in nearly every shop. There is often something interesting going on at the Boathouse next door, and North House Folk School is less than a block away. On stormy nights the breaking waves send a deep rumble through the bedrock. Many mornings you wake to seagulls and fog. We recently had a fox in the yard and a beaver lumbered through on his way to somewere important to beavers. In winter there are myriad trails to explore on ski or snowshoe, romantic dining opportunites, live music, shopping, snomobiling, or just being cozy by the fire. We chose this location because it is very special. We have lived on site for over 20 years, and are lifelong Miinnesotans and have been passing through Grand Marais our whole lives. We wanted a home on the North Shore, and we believe that Grand Marais is the jewel of the North Shore. Within Grand Marais we wanted to be close to the action and the water. Although this is a very small town, it has big shoulders when it comes to culture and beauty. We belive our specific location is magical because the big lake cools us in summer and warms us in winter. That effect fades away only a couple blocks up the hill. We consider ourselves blessed.

What makes this property unique

Travel insurance- a more popular option than ever before in these uncertain times! If booking direct you are saving roughly 12-15%. Travel insurance costs between 7 and 9.8%. You can still come out ahead and be fully insured. Or, if. you are confident (and we really hope you are) just pocket the savings and treat your group to a good dinner when you get here. But please don't just book some dates and then cancel and assume there will be a refund- you must make the correct decisions now that suit your comfort level. Please let us know of your full agreement with these terms and we will go ahead and approve your booking. Thanks so much! Todd and Susan
