Tucked away in the old side streets, in a quiet little residential area, around Ilfracombe’s popular and pretty harbour, you will find the little treasure of Harbour Hideaway, formerly two cottages with a separate staircase to each bedroom, one at each end of the house. The original parts of this fisherman’s cottage date back to circa 1750. It has been lovingly converted to be a comfortable hideaway with the added bonus of its own private hot tub with a retractable canopy. Stylish furnishings along with a multi-fuel burner, oak beams and partly exposed stone walls make it a cosy retreat in cooler months. Located a short walk from both the harbour and town centre, the cottage has much to offer guests during their stay. There is a large range of pubs, Michelin star restaurants and shops to choose from around Ilfracombe’s centre, whilst the famous Tunnels Beaches is just around the corner. A short walk away is Ilfracombe’s harbour area, with its quayside, lifeboat station, church overlooking the Bristol Channel and not forgetting the much talked about ’Verity’ sculpture by Damien Hurst. This is a retreat perfect for families and groups of friends but also makes an idyllic love nest for two.

There are numerous attractions within easy reach of the house, including the Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park, Watermouth Castle and the Lynton to Lynmouth Cliff Railway. At Croyde and Woolacombe, you will find some of the best and cleanest surf beaches in the country, as well as many smaller coves and bays. Exmoor and the South West Coast Path are located close by, and on a clear day the views can be spectacular of the surrounding coast and countryside from these well-known walking areas. There are National Trust properties at Arlington and Knightshayes, and the RHS gardens at Rosemoor in Great Torrington. In Barnstaple, a 20-minute drive, there are pantomimes in the winter season at the Queen’s Theatre, and the Landmark Theatre in Ilfracombe puts on various shows and performances leading up to Christmas. They also have a lantern festival parade and light switch on which is quite a big local event. Golf available nearby. Beach 200 yards. Shop, pub and restaurant 50 yards.

We had a lovely week in this delightful cottage which has been beautifully converted into one cottag

We had a lovely week in this delightful cottage which has been beautifully converted into one cottage from two. This means that guests can have privacy from each other at each side of the house. One side does have slightly steep steps, but with a strong handrail. There is a hairdryer in the house which I wish I had known before packing (more room for shoes 🤣)The kitchen is well equipped for cooking, with lots of crockery, cutlery, pots and pans. Also a dishwasher for cleaning up afterwards. It has a Tassimo coffee machine, which I wish I had known in advance as we have one too and I could have brought some spare pods to save me money buying morning coffee at the very local Wetherspoons, where I became a local (they do kindly leave you a selection when you arrive). There are also basics in the cupboard like salt, pepper, clingfilm etc.The cottage is ideally place for all the Ilfracombe activities, including the lovely aquarium and Tunnels beaches. If you are visiting in October beware of attractions further away saying they are open, but actually being closed for winter. The cottage is also very close to local pubs and restaurants. In October, my sentence about checking places are actually open also applies, but I would highly recommend the local Italian Giovanni and Luca. I can imagine it would be a very different experience at the height of summer. It’s close to the harbour and fabulous views. The hot tub was also a hit. And to finish off the owners were very helpful too.Highly recommended!
