Indeed a cosy studio. We enjoyed the comfy bed and special tea selection in particular. We could walk to and from Bar Midland for our special dinner (highly recommended by the way) which was ideal.

Such a lovely studio in prime location. The owner came for a quick chat after I’ve checked in. Delicious fruit bread for breakfast. Would definitely stay here again.

This was the perfect countey escape

It was close to town but still felt really private. Loved the whole vibe of the place with the overgown cottage garden and beautiful brick arch as you enter. Everything inside was clean and well presented.

The cottage was lovely and exactly what we were looking for. Fantastic location, and Peter even supplied us with some delicious fruit toast for breakfast. Highly recommend!

Cosy cottage perfect for short stays

Clean and aesthetic cottage with everything you need for a couple of days stay in Castlemaine. I appreciated the quality tea selection and provided fruit bread for a quick breakfast. The host was also great with communication.

The property was exactly as described and was lovely and cosy. We were pleasantly surprised, by the lovely range of tea and plunger coffee, and the thoughtful and unexpected breakfast supplies. I absolutely love that it was all fully sustainable with no disposable items. I don't think I have even stayed anywhere else that has had a compost bin available, that had solar and really good insulation. The goldfields letter on the wall gave us about 2 hours of entertainment as we tried to read through it. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

Very cold, couldn’t get heating working properly the first night, owner came & adjusted it for second night, marginally better but still not really warm. Place was in need of a good clean (microwave plate grimy, cups very stained) pathway to get in quite steep & covered with slippery leaves & a hose lying across it - quite hazardous but could easily have been fixed. All in all, not a very satisfactory place.

Everything we needed

We arrived late and went out for dinner. Peter the owner came over to check we had everything we needed - a lovely hot shower and breakie ingredients in the fridge. Great to get his local knowledge of the Goldfields Track too. He was very helpful.

We found the property and the garden in need of attention. / The garden was very unkept and overgrown. This was disappointing as we were looking forward to enjoying the garden while we were there. / The bathroom needs attention, mould in the shower, the shower handle fell off and toilet seat was loose. / up able to close the fly screen to the only door to the room.

Basic accommodation

Could be good accommodation with a little work. Bed was very comfortable but the chairs were not, being bare timber. No television and WiFi was very slow falling to less than 12Mb/s in the evenings, 3.2Mb/s at one point so streaming was impossible (measured by Ookla Speedtest). Dishes were greasy and had to be washed before use.

I am a retired Chinese-language teacher and school principal who is passionate about gardening and the arts. I also have a hobby of recycling local stone to build walls and arches in the garden (see pictures). I love travel and have travelled throughout Asia and the Pacific. I love talking with people about the places they have been and their journeys. I am a volunteer firefighter involved in many community activities.

Located on the 150-year-old property Cliffleigh, Studio 3 is a self-contained unit ideal for couples, single travellers or small families. Equipped with a comfortable queen bed and with kitchenette and attached private ensuite, it is easy walking distance from the town centre, station and Goldfields steam train. This is an easy no fuss place to enjoy the Goldfields.

What makes this property unique

The space has been extensively renovated with sustainability in mind. It has features that reduce heat loss and external heat gain. The studio is air-conditioned and heated, though is less reliant on these facilities because of its environmental design – for the most part it remains cool in summer and warm in winter.

The garden has extensive plantings of food plants and trees designed to work with the buildings to keep cool in the summer and warm in the winter. It's a wild jungle of trees and spaces designed to get lost in; you will need to search elsewhere for a neatly planted manicured settings.
