About this property
Mid-Coast Maine Island Boathouse: a Kayaker's Dream.
Wanna get away?
First, close your eyes and imagine retreating to small island just off the coast of Maine. Our Maine island cabin is the ultimate escape from “the real world.” Nestled amid hay-scented ferns and white birch trees, in full view of a sandy beach and the pristine Muscongus Sound, our rustic retreat will transport you back to a simpler time—without clutter, stress, and in harmony with nature—but with a soft bed and a well-stocked kitchen. PBS’ Frontier Living show has nothing on this authentic island experience.
Built in 2003 in the tradition of a Maine boathouse, the cabin’s double doors open to the southern sun for a refreshing connection to the surrounding woods and salt air. Its spacious deck and Adirondack chairs, plus nearby hammock, offer the perfect reading, sunbathing or stargazing spot with a 180 degree view of the beach. The boathouse is located 100-feet above low-water and enjoys 400 ft. of private shoreline frontage. Sandy in places and pebbly in others, the beach provides ample treasures for discovery and is a perfect starting point for your Muscongus Sound boating adventure. Berry baskets and a clam rake are provided for the hunter/gathers. Wooded trails lead from the cabin to the island’s historic church, cemetery and farmhouses.
Simple living does have a few complications, as there is no electricity, no running water; the refrigerator is powered by propane. Drinking water is carried to the premises in gallon containers. Wash water is collected from the rain barrel or fetched from the nearby spring. Ice is available from the owner and from the mainland. Liquid paraffin lamps as well as a gas cylinder lamp, light the living space. A waist-high two-burner propane stove serves as a effecient cooking facility.
The boathouse is easily accessible from scenic Round Pond Harbor, directly across the Sound from the boathouse, and is only 15 minutes away by kayak. Round Pond Village offers fine dining, fresh dockside lobster dinners, a small sandwich counter and general store, antiques and collectibles, and an old time gift shop and ice cream scoop. The boathouse is also a short water taxi ride from Muscongus Harbor, the put-in spot for area sea kayak tours. Transportation arrangements should be coordinated with the owners.
Your arrival and pick up costs are included in the price of your stay. I will make the arrangements. The new water taxi departs from Muscongus Harbor (the harbor just a couple miles north of Round Pond Harbor). It's a lovely quintessential tiny coastal harbor. A personal favorite.
Muscongus Marine also offers ample parking: park your vehicle $15. pre day.
And if, during your stay at the Boathouse, you would like to explore the midcoast area by road this water taxi service is available to you for the 'going rates'.
