We enjoyed our stay at the property. The bedrooms were plentiful and large for our group of 6. It was close by to all of the attractions on Mt. Desert Island. We loved the quiet and wildlife right outside our door.

We enjoyed our stay. The check in/check out process was very smooth. House was plenty spacious for our big group. Upstairs shower was not working well due to low water pressure but the host was honest and communicated with us to let us know a plumber was attempting to fix it. House is in a great area with lots to do around. We would stay here again if we all came back to Maine!

Spacious house. Quiet area. The house is cute. We saw wildlife in the back yard. The kitchen pans and the silverware need an upgrade. There were many ac units which was very appreciated. There was a strong smell in the basement bedrooms. We did love our stay.

We had a very lovely stay! The host was very accommodating for us and went out of their way to help when we needed assistance! Only draw back were the lack of curtains in the bathrooms, but that could be because we’re city folk! Still, would highly recommend this house and host!

The floors were sticky. Dishes were dirty. No paper towels or extra toilet paper. Door would not lock. Outlet hanging out of wall. Had to turn on lights for outlets to work. No water pressure in showers. Water did not get hot. No A/C or fans. Couch was full of crumbs and hair. It was a good thing we were kept busy away from the house.

Oh James we are so sorry you had such a terrible time with our home. Had we known we would have happily come over and amended the issues. Our home is a family one and not a rental turned business property. So it does have some quirks. We did leave a note alerting you to the hot water, if you use the sink while Someone Is showering it does impact the temperature and the pressure. Our plumber has it on their list! I did not know about the outlet, nor the cleanliness, that will be addressed immediately. We don’t use AC until July, but they are available prior to upon request. The guest after you reported the lock issue and I fixed it immediately. I am so glad you found enjoyment out and about on our beautiful island.

I would not rent this house again. Not only was the description inaccurate, as further discussed below, it was also overpriced for what we received. A list of issues:1) The house is advertised as having window AC unite, while only two of the six bedrooms have them.2) The kitchen is very poorly stocked. There is no dishwasher, which is not an issue, other than the fact. the dishes were dirty when we arrived. We had to hand wash every item before we used it. There was also only one dish towel, so not a very easy set up to hand wash dishes. The dish drainer was old and dirty as well. There were only 6 dining room chairs for a house that slept 12 people. I would not plan to cook meals in this home. Pictures of pans to come. 3)The upstairs(second) shower in the house did not work. While water did technically trickle out of the shower head, the water pressure was so low that it didn't wash off soap even when no other water was running in the house. This left us with one shower for 9 people. Based on the other reviews, it appears this has been an issue this summer and should have been resolved before our arrival. 4)There was a strong smell of cleaner that seemed to be working overtime to cover other smells in the house. 5)The outlet (mentioned in a previous comment)sticking out of the wall has not been fixed and is a safety hazard. The house was generally not in good condition and should not be rented for 600/night and frankly should not be rented in the condition it is in.

Lori, thank you so much for your honest opinion. For future stays please never be afraid to contact the home owner to let them know your issues. I myself would have made a point to address anything I was able. As an aside it is incredibly challenging on this island to get prompt electrical or plumbing assistance due to low numbers of contractors and high rental property/summer property demand. The shower has been fixed as of last week and the electrical concern remains on their schedule. The next time you bring 21 people instead of 12 (my father in law who lives next door confirmed) please alert your host. The next time you bring a pet with you without prior permission please expect to have your host keep your security deposit. We spent significant amount of time, double what is usual, cleaning up after the animal you had on site (photos to come). Additionally we made an exception for two extra people to come free of charge, noting to you prior to that the home is not designed for that many people. This is our HOME. We vacate in the summer to share with others and provide our kids with the experience of other places when not in school. Next time, rent a house turned business turned rental, NOT a FAMILY home.

Excellent house, very spacious and clean. A few constructive criticism comments would make the stay perfect! we didn’t get checkin instructions so had to sit in driveway for 30 min calling and texting the homeowners to get code. The basement had a very strong chemical smell (recently cleaned carpets?) so we didn’t use the Bsmt bedrooms. No garbage bags or toilet paper but they dropped some off after requesting. Beds comfortable. Coffee maker broken. The main bathroom window needs a shade or curtain to block view from neighbors. Just a few tweaks and this would be the perfect rental!! Thank you for a nice stay.

Thank you so much Beth! We did JUST replace the carpets prior to your arrival, and cleaned the carpets on the main floors, my apologies that the scent was too strong! We have since brought over a new coffee pot, I know the k-cup option is not always a favorite even when available, so there is a new coffee pot with craffe on site now. I have updated the check in instructions to auto send thank you very much for letting us know it wasn't working, I am sorry that impacted you and your group negatively. I ill also add privacy tint to the bathroom downstairs. We would love to have you back anytime, thank you for helping us make our place that much better for the next guests.

About the host

Hosted by Hilary

Host profile image
From Mount Desert Island we are happy to offer up our family home for the first time to the public. Many warm family memories were made here, the land owned or generations by the same family. We have outgrown it now, as our kids are getting older, and moved to a nearby town. We own and operate a local business offering groundskeeping and housekeeping services to summer residents and locals alike.

Why they chose this property

The Hodgdon family is on the original historical register of families documented on MDI. This property was originally a dairy farm for the Hodgdon family. Passed down for generations we strive to find ways to keep it in the family for our children to inherit. This property chose us and is available to the public for a limited time.

What makes this property unique

Quiet and situated away from the hustle and bustle of towns, yet close to ponds, lakes and the ocean as well as convenience stores and shops. Cozy home with plenty of room for families to tuck in and spend quality time together, yet enough room for multiple families to find their own space. Multiple outdoor spaces, including two decks, a front lawn and lower lawn with fire pit and kid playhouse, in addition to a fenced in back yard.
