About this property
Beautiful Maine Coast Vacation Cabin
Looking for a quiet vacation place to rent early summer or fall? We have the perfect place for you-- our family vacation cottage on the beautiful Maine coast. The cottage is located in Sorrento, Maine, a small lobstering village that sits on a peninsula on Frenchman’s Bay and looks across to the mountains of Acadia National Park that rise out of the sea.
Sorrento is located in Maine’s storied “Down East,” 13 miles west of the small city of Ellsworth and 25 miles from Bangor—about an 8-9 hour drive from the New York metro region or five hours from Boston--just far enough to get away from smog, noise and congestion and close enough to nature to hear the cries of gulls and loons, to sight bald eagles, osprey, foxes.
Still a bargain on the Maine coast, the cottage sleeps up to 8 people—two bedrooms containing two queen beds, a bunk room with two bunk beds, and two additional twin beds in the loft. It has two full baths, living and dining areas, kitchen with dishwasher, a deck overlooking the bay, a fireplace, and a wood stove for Spring and Fall. The house DOES NOT have central heat. Our wood-burning stove is excellent and can efficiently heat the entire house on chilly days. There is plenty of wood in the basement, along with a washer and dryer. The house is fully furnished, including a library and linens - all surrounded by trees and the bay.
Across the bay and a 40-minute drive is Mt. Desert Island, home to the jewel of our national park system, Acadia National Park, with its great hiking trails and a view of mountains, islands, and sea from every summit. Also located on MDI is the resort town of Bar Harbor with its myriad tourist attractions like whale watch tours, plays, concerts, restaurants, etc. Nearer still is Schoodic Peninsula, another part of Acadia National Park.
Don’t count out the early summer or fall. These are quieter times for those who crave a real rest and with global warming heating up the planet these times are becoming more desirable.
We rent from Sunday to Sunday on a weekly basis.

About the host
Hosted by Jay Douglas

One of us is a retired university professor and the other a retired clergyman. We are both still active in our retirement. We have two daughters--a doctor and a college professor-- and five wonderful grandchildren for whom this cottage in Sorrento is a treasure.
Why they chose this property
We first discovered Sorrento when some friends who had a cottage there invited us to visit them when our older daughter was just six years old. We immediately fell in love with the area and rented for many years before we were able to purchase this property and build our own cottage. Many families come back to Sorrento summer after summer making it a unique, multigenerational community.
What makes this property unique
Year-round residents share this beautiful peninsula with its magnificent views with seasonal residents and renters, with foxes and bald eagles and osprey and cormorants and loons. The peninsula is located between two sections of Acadia National Park that are easily accessible by car. The surrounding area abounds with local crafters and artists and during the summer months there is an abundance of concerts, plays, etc. The nearest town of any size is Ellsworth, about 13 miles away, a lovely old Maine town with great antique and gift shops as well as supermarkets and gas stations. Frenchman's Bay, on which Sorrento is located, is an ideal place for sailing. The bay is dotted with islands and looks across to Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. During the summer months for an extra fee renters can buy into additional amenities from the Village Improvement Association (VIA) that include access to a saltwater pool, tennis courts, a golf course, and organized activities for children. Information about the VIA can be found at: In the early summer and fall months, the area is quite peaceful and quiet--the perfect place for a retreat, a sabbatical, or a family reunion.
