Looking for a quiet vacation place to rent early summer or fall? We have the perfect place for you-- our family vacation cottage on the beautiful Maine coast. The cottage is located in Sorrento, Maine, a small lobstering village that sits on a peninsula on Frenchman’s Bay and looks across to the mountains of Acadia National Park that rise out of the sea.
Sorrento is located in Maine’s storied “Down East,” 13 miles west of the small city of Ellsworth and 25 miles from Bangor—about an 8-9 hour drive from the New York metro region or five hours from Boston--just far enough to get away from smog, noise and congestion and close enough to nature to hear the cries of gulls and loons, to sight bald eagles, osprey, foxes.
Still a bargain on the Maine coast, the cottage sleeps up to 8 people—two bedrooms containing two queen beds, a bunk room with two bunk beds, and two additional twin beds in the loft. It has two full baths, living and dining areas, kitchen with dishwasher, a deck overlooking the bay, a fireplace, and a wood stove for Spring and Fall. The house DOES NOT have central heat. Our wood-burning stove is excellent and can efficiently heat the entire house on chilly days. There is plenty of wood in the basement, along with a washer and dryer. The house is fully furnished, including a library and linens - all surrounded by trees and the bay.
Across the bay and a 40-minute drive is Mt. Desert Island, home to the jewel of our national park system, Acadia National Park, with its great hiking trails and a view of mountains, islands, and sea from every summit. Also located on MDI is the resort town of Bar Harbor with its myriad tourist attractions like whale watch tours, plays, concerts, restaurants, etc. Nearer still is Schoodic Peninsula, another part of Acadia National Park.
Don’t count out the early summer or fall. These are quieter times for those who crave a real rest and with global warming heating up the planet these times are becoming more desirable.
We rent from Sunday to Sunday on a weekly basis.

We had a very relaxing stay at the cabin, beautiful location right on the coast watching the sunrise over water. The place is close enough to Acadia for day trips and yet secluded and tranquil. Biking along Ocean Ave was a treat. The cabin was well maintained, clean, and spacious. The owner communicated everything clearly. Overall highly recommended.
Beautiful cottage in a stunning, very peaceful area! It's in a great location to explore Acadia (both Mount Desert Island and Schoodic Peninsula) and we enjoyed the many beautiful short trails nearby as well. The fireplace is lovely, the kitchen is well stocked, the rooms are comfortable and as others have noted, filled with beautiful artwork. I echo others on the terrific library too - just perfect to sit by the fire on a rainy day and browse through the books.

Staying at this property, which I did for one week, was like visiting my grandmother's house while she's out of town. The cottage is custom built, in a quiet spot near the water, and well equipped with kitchen utensils, chinaware, two bikes, canoes, wood for the fireplace, etc. The home is well designed, and offers the attitude of a summer rental cottage vs. a commercial rental establishment. It's in a great location to meditate on the glory of our Creator yet close enough to see attractions like Bar Harbor and Cadillac Mtn. Staying here allowed me to finally find the rest I needed and also enjoy the main sites such as Acadia National Park. I'm so grateful that the owners allowed me to share their family cottage and I hope to make a return visit next year.
The cottage itself had a great array of books, puzzles and games, and many of the pieces hanging were made by the owner, family and friends.
Sorrento is off the mainstream of tourism which is nice. Wonderful for walking with views of Acadia NP along with friendly people.
A great stay!
We had a great stay at the cottage. It was clean and had everything needed to feel at home for the week. The location was convenient to the Schoodic peninsula. We would definitely stay here again.
We stayed in this lovely cottage five years ago. Having enjoyed our visit so much we vowed to return. This year’s return was every bit as enjoyable…… the pleasant deck received much use, as did the well-stocked bookshelves and the games. The general walkability and quietness of the neighborhood only added to our pleasure.
A return visit in a year or two is already being planned.

Dear Renter,
Thank you for the lovely review and for taking such good care of our property. The renters who followed you found it in perfect shape. We hope you will consider our cottage for next year's vacation.

The property is a perfect Maine get away. Beautiful views of Frenchman’s Bay and a charming community perfect for bicycling. The house is large, well appointed, and filled with good original art.The owner was very accommodating of our special request and when the dryer had an issue, the repairman was there the next day. I enjoy cooking and the kitchen was perfect with spices etc. We could not have had a better or more comfortable stay- it was very hard to leave.
Great location with stunning view providing solitude and privacy, yet close enough to Bar Harbor. Great access area to all parts of Acadia within a short drive. Most relaxing and agenda free trip I’ve had I. Years. Communication with property manager and owners was excellent! House fully stocked with towels, linens and kitchen equipment. Shady location with a great wood burner that came in handy for a chilly rainy evening. Highly recommend!

Cozy cottage on a bluff in Sorrento with beautiful views!
The Oak Bluff cottage was the perfect location for our stay. This comfortable, cozy cottage has everything you could need including a well appointed kitchen and an interesting library of books. It's an extremely clean, well maintained home as described on the website and Sheila was excellent to work with. The views from the deck of the surrounding bay are lovely and although you don't access the water here, it is a short walk down the road to a rocky beach. The town harbor in Sorrento is a great place to watch the sunset, meet some locals and walk in the evenings.
We highly recommend this cottage for it's proximity to area attractions while providing a peaceful, comfortable cottage to return to or not to leave at all.

Thank you so much for your wonderful review. We are so happy when our renters enjoy the place as much as we do!
The property is absolutely lovely, and even nicer than the listing. The photos do not do it justice. It is very well equipped and there was excellent information on the area, and the house itself. I especially enjoyed all the original family artwork on the walls.
It was a chilly week so the plentiful supply of firewood was greatly appreciated. The lovely deck is a great place for coffee or a glass of wine and to enjoy the spectacular view and watch the birds as the tides flow in and out.
After many years of vacationing in MDI, it has become very very crowded, and Sorrento was the perfect antidote! Spending more time discovering the beauty of Schoodic and other surrounding hikes was great. One week was hardly enough time but we enjoyed every minute, even the rainy Monday was a great chance to make good use of the well stocked bookshelf!
Really, you could not ask for a nicer more comfortable stay!

The property was lovely.
We greatly enjoyed our stay at this charming cottage in Sorrento, ME. It was cozy, clean and inviting inside, with interesting artwork and an inviting library. Outside, the deck afforded space for relaxing and taking in the amazing view of the water. The bedroom configuration was not the best for our family. The two with queen beds were fine, but we needed a third for our son, who is almost 6'5". He couldn't fit into the small bunks in the third bedroom, so used the loft, which he said was "like sleeping in the kitchen." Oh well, not a major problem...! The owner was very communicative and accommodating. We loved exploring Acadia and Bar Harbor. It took us 35-40 minutes to get over there each time, which, while not ideal, was do-able. One day we stayed at the cottage and took the canoe out, for a more "chill" time. A microwave would be a good addition. We mostly cooked dinners at the cottage, but one night had a great meal at Union River Lobster Pot Restaurant in Ellsworth. I highly recommend this property!
Sorrento is wonderful & house is excellent but renters note it is on a bluff, no direct water access
Sorrento itself is a unique Maine village that feels that the real Maine experience - many amenities including pool, trails, tennis courts, and more. The village is walkable from the house. The house is quite nice and comfy. I like that it is open and airy but there are a few details that renters should be aware of before renting this property. 1) The pictures can be misinterpreted to look like the lawn is right on the water. The house is in the trees on a bluff that is 10-15ft off the water. There is no way to launch kayaks or paddleboards directly from the property (which I missed from description). You can launch at the public launch in town (but must drive). There is a beach access just down the street but it is privately owned and I was told by homeowner that I was not allowed to launch my kayak there. They seem to be okay with people walking along the water there thankfully. 2) The house is in the forest / trees - so views are through trees and it was pretty buggy in early June and made use of the nice deck tough. I should note it had been rainy but we had stayed previous week on water in Corea and didn't struggle with mosquitos as much. On the other hand, the walks from the house on the road are beautiful and there are a ton of trails you can use. 3) The downside of the open wood construction and lack of insulation is that sound carries through the house very easily. If you have teenagers who stay up late, you'll hear them talk in the bedrooms and sound of people going in and out of bathroom communicates through the house. If you have light sleepers, it's something to be aware.
These items noted, we really enjoyed the house and our stay. An unadvertised bonus was that there is a REALLY nice big work desk on second floor with views to water for those who have to work remote and fast internet. The décor reflected the artists ownership with some works by family members. The combo of wood stove and open fireplace made for cozy nights and mornings. It's a fantastic stove (recent model Jotul!) and will easily heat the whole house. We had a snafu with check-in where the check-in time had been changed to 2 hours later but, since we rented before that change, our instructions didn't reflect the later time. That's the fault of VRBO, not the owners. That said, house wasn't ready by the new check-in time and left us in awkward spot. Of course, everyone is dealing with staffing shortages so am sympathetic.
The house had almost everything we wanted. Well stocked and comfortable. The only thing I was disappointed about was the water access. There is no dock and the water access is a very short walk down the road to a public beach. Overall, a great house and we had a great time in Maine.
I’ve been coming to Oak Bluff since 2004. Each year it feels like coming home. The area is the right mix of things to do with a home base that offers everything I need to relax.
I’ve looked for places with the same blend and haven’t found them. So I’ll be back next year.
This place is convenient to parks, restaurants and shopping and at the same time so quiet and peaceful. Great interior fireplace.. Would return any time.
Jay is very communicative. Great property with wonderful views of the bay and a great porch to enjoy them. Easy access to Bar Harbor and the Schoodic Peninsula.
We really enjoyed our stay. Communication was great and the property manager was above and beyond helpful. The cabin is lovely, and we so enjoyed long walks by the water through Sorrento.
I've been coming to Oak Bluff for 15 years or so and it is the time I look forward to most in my year. The mix of isolation and proximity is just right and the view from the deck is ever-changing and peaceful.
We had a great time in Sorrento, and this was the perfect place to stay. We loved that it was both in-the-woods and on-the-ocean, and we loved the size and accessibility of everything in Sorrento. The house was comfortable and cozy - the fireplace made the trip! The nights were cool, so having the fireplace was amazing. And the sunrises and morning were terrific from the deck. Jay was really helpful and responsive and the whole experience was really positive. We'd love to come back!

One of us is a retired university professor and the other a retired clergyman. We are both still active in our retirement. We have two daughters--a doctor and a college professor-- and five wonderful grandchildren for whom this cottage in Sorrento is a treasure.
Why they chose this property
We first discovered Sorrento when some friends who had a cottage there invited us to visit them when our older daughter was just six years old. We immediately fell in love with the area and rented for many years before we were able to purchase this property and build our own cottage. Many families come back to Sorrento summer after summer making it a unique, multigenerational community.
What makes this property unique
Year-round residents share this beautiful peninsula with its magnificent views with seasonal residents and renters, with foxes and bald eagles and osprey and cormorants and loons. The peninsula is located between two sections of Acadia National Park that are easily accessible by car. The surrounding area abounds with local crafters and artists and during the summer months there is an abundance of concerts, plays, etc. The nearest town of any size is Ellsworth, about 13 miles away, a lovely old Maine town with great antique and gift shops as well as supermarkets and gas stations. Frenchman's Bay, on which Sorrento is located, is an ideal place for sailing. The bay is dotted with islands and looks across to Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. During the summer months for an extra fee renters can buy into additional amenities from the Village Improvement Association (VIA) that include access to a saltwater pool, tennis courts, a golf course, and organized activities for children. Information about the VIA can be found at: In the early summer and fall months, the area is quite peaceful and quiet--the perfect place for a retreat, a sabbatical, or a family reunion.
